Cattlemen and Friends, Welcome to our 24 th annual bull sale and thank you for your interest in our cattle. We were blessed with a good year at Honeyman Charolais. On Feb. 15 th, Jeran and Andrea had their 3 rd child (another boy) Jace Lucas Honeyman. Rhonda and I now have 6 grandsons 4 years old and younger. It gets pretty lively at our house at Christmas time but it is a lot of fun. We had a dry year, like much of the country, but we were very fortunate to get some timely rains for the crops which turned out to be surprisingly good. We were also lucky to have old grass in the pastures from the last 2 wet years so we managed to squeeze by on grass. The hay crop was a different story, one of the poorest we have had in years, but again we were fortunate to have a lot of carryover from last year. So compared to many people, we had a good year. These are exciting times to be in the cattle business with still record high cattle prices and ranchers bringing home some of the biggest paychecks of their lifetime. The cow numbers in the country have dropped again this year due to the drought so in turn, the demand for feeder cattle should remain high. Char-cross calves are still in high demand and feeders cannot find enough of them. This should be a great time to switch to Charolais bulls or upgrade your Charolais bull battery. We still sell cattle by the pound and the Char-cross calves will put the pounds on as fast as any breed and due it efficiently. The quality of this group runs deep which we feel is a tribute to our mother cows. The females are the backbone of this operation and we think you will see that when you look at our cattle. The bulls were weaned on Oct. 7 when they were given all of their shots and poured with Ivermax. They were retreated for lice with Cylence on Jan 2, the same day their final weights were taken. This weight was used to calculate their ADG, WDA, and YW. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day. In looking through the catalog, you may notice that some of the 205 day weights on bulls out of 1 st calf heifers are as good, and in many cases actually better, than many of the bulls coming off older cows. We thought we should clarify why this may have happened. First of all, the bull calves on heifers are creep fed. The bull calves on everything else are only creep fed for a short 5-6 weeks before weaning just to help weaning go better. We also are able to rotate pastures one time for the heifers where we do not have that luxury with the cows. But that is not the whole picture. We have been doing that exact same thing for over 10 years now and the average weaning weights of bull calves off 1 st calf heifers have never out done the cows. We believe some of it is genetics. We calved out 35 heifers, 20 of which had bull calves, and all 20 made the sale cut - that does not happen by chance. The best will always rise to the top and some of these bulls started there and stayed there. When it comes to raising Charolais seedstock, our philosophy is a balanced trait selection approach not over or under emphasizing one particular trait. With this approach, we feel our cattle will fit into each phase of the cattle industry from the cow/calf operator, to the feeder, to slaughter. Our #1 goal is customer satisfaction if you aren t happy, we aren t happy. They are fed a high fiber pellet that is formulated for growing bulls out without getting them fat and fleshy. It is a very safe feed and can actually be fed in selffeeders, although we have never fed that way. Our bulls have always been bucket fed twice a day plus fence line fed all the long grass hay they want- they get absolutely no silage. We feel this way of feeding the bulls is ideal for getting them in the right condition for breeding and still allows them the ability to show how they grow on feed. They are measured at the same time we take the birth weights. We feel it is as valuable as the birth weight itself in measuring ease of calving. We maintain the thought that a calf with a 100# birth weight and a 28 inch chest will calve just as easily as a calf with an 85# birth weight and a 28 inch chest. If a breeding problem has been confirmed by a veterinarian, the buyer must notify the seller and return the bull in good health and in good condition for the guarantee to apply. The buyer will be given a satisfactory replacement, your money back, or credit towards the purchase of another bull in the next sale. In no case will the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. Honeyman Charolais will make every effort to ensure that you, our customer, are fully satisfied with the bulls purchased. REGISTRATION: All of the bulls selling are purebred and registered with the AICA. Papers will be transferred to the new owner after delivery of the bulls. SEMEN TESTING DISCOUNTS: For those of you who want us to feed your bulls until Apr. 1, 2013, we will have them semen tested sometime in late March, at our expense, before we deliver them to you. For those who take your bulls home after the sale, we will give you a $100 discount on the purchase price, but if you choose to have them semen tested, that expense will be yours. VIEWING THE BULLS: DELIVERY AND FEEDING: Honeyman Charolais will feed all bulls sold in the sale until April 1, 2013, free of charge. We offer this to our customers for their convenience, and keeping the bulls on the same ration for a longer period of time allows them to keep growing and allows us to get them in the right condition for the breeding season.
