His time of 22.36 in the 200-meter dash was.09 seconds better than his closest competition, while his clocking of 49.23 in the 400-meter dash was.54 better than the second place finisher. Female Athlete of the Week Kira Sims, Akron (Jr., Dale City, Va.) set a new Akron and Mid-American Conference record with a secondplace jump of 13-4 1/4 at the Florida Relays. The mark betters her previous Akron record of 12-11 3/4 set last year and is an NCAA Regional qualifying mark. She now holds both the indoor and outdoor Mid-American Conference pole vault records. Outdoor Track and Field Release, March 31, 2003 Page 2 Other Nominees Joe Clark, Buffalo (Sr., Amherst, N.Y.) placed 2nd overall in the 400-meter run with a time of 47.56 at the Raleigh Relays. Jake Flynn, Central Michigan (So., Benzonia, Mich.) finished 33rd of 66 runners in the 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Invite. Flynn's time of 29:46.88 was a new personal record with the old record standing at 30:16 in track. His time was just over four seconds away from a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA regional meet. Zach Helm, Marshall (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) led the way for the Marshall men s team at the Raleigh Relays this weekend. Helm placed ninth in the men s hammer throw with a distance of 165-8. Helm was the top placer for the men at the 155 team event. David Mitchell, Miami (So., Woodridge, Ill.) easily won the 3000-meter run at the Ball State Relays with a time of 8:36.3. Mitchell led four RedHawks to the top-four spots by easily winning the race by nearly 13 seconds. Grant Franson, Western Michigan (So., Saginaw, Mich.) earned a personal-record in winning the 200-meter dash by clocking a 22.22 in near-freezing conditions at the WMU Invite. He won the race by over a half a second. Other Nominees Katie Nowak, Ball State (Sr., Parkesburg, Pa.) paced the field in the 800-meter dash and the 1500-meter run at the Ball State Relays last weekend. Her time of 2:27.10 in the 800 was 1.31 faster than the second place finisher, while her time of 4:54.62 in the 1500 was 1.66 seconds better than the rest of the field. Alicia Taylor, Bowling Green (Jr., Cleveland Hts., Ohio) placed first in both the 200 meter dash (25.08) and the 100- meter hurdles (14.39) at the Western Michigan Invite. Taylor was also a part of the 400 meter relay that placed second with a time of 48.38. Faith Thompson, Buffalo (Jr., Niagara Falls, N.Y.) qualified for the NCAA Regional meet and set a new school record by over 1 1/2 feet in the shot put with a throw of 46-7 1/4 at the Raleigh Relays. Jackie Smart, Central Michigan (Fr., Blue Island, Ill.) In her first collegiate home outdoor meet, Smart broke the CMU 13-year-old record in the triple jump. Her leap of 40-11 1/2 bettered the old mark of 40-2 3/4 set by Michelle Tate in 1990. The mark was also good enough to qualify her for the NCAA regional meet held May 30. Erin Compton, Marshall (Jr., Oak Hill, W.Va.) surpassed the NCAA Regional provisional qualifying mark in the discus for the second straight meet, Compton threw 160-1 which was good enough for fifth place at the 155 team Raleigh Relays this weekend. Compton came up three feet short of qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in the women s hammer throw, with a distance of 165-5, good enough for 10th place in the event. Andrea Kremer, Miami (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) placed fifth out of 150 runners in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:35.00 at the Adidas Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State. Only one other collegiate runner beat Kremer as she easily beat the NCAA Regional Qualifying time on her way to setting her own personal record and giving Miami the second fastest time in school history behind former all-american, Molly Cullen. Foli James, Ohio (Sr., Albany, Ohio) finished fourth in the 100 hurdles with 13.95 and second in the high jump with a jump of 5-7 at the Raleigh Relays. Kristi Ford, Western Michigan (So., Lowell, Mich.) set a school record and recorded an NCAA regional qualifying mark at the WMU Invite, tossing 176-0 to win the hammer throw. The distance broke her own school record, which she set the week before. She won the event by nearly 12 feet.
