The January 2018 Volume LXXXII, Number 1 EDGE Newsletter of The January is National Learn to Ski or Snowboard Month January is officially designated as Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, so the Hudson Valley Ski Club will be joining other ski clubs and resorts around the country when we offer free ski and snowboard learning and improvement lessons on Sunday, Jan 7 at Belleayre Mt. Regardless of your ability level, there is always something to take away from a lesson. Skiers and snowboarders know how to enjoy winter. Let your friends know that you are part of the family the ski and snowboard family so you can spend more time together. Share the passion; bring a friend, neighbor, brother/sister, parent, grandparent, children (age 12+). Never been skiing? Take a lesson from a Pro and learn the basics that will take you to a winter wonderland of fun and excitement. Still in that intermediate rut? Your certified Pro will help you find that ah-ha moment. That s when everything clicks and you realize your skiing or snowboarding has reached that next level of enhanced abilities. Lessons for beginner/novice and intermediate/advanced will be offered. Additional lesson days will be: Thursday, Jan. 11- Windham; Sunday, Jan. 21-Jiminy. Sign up with Herb Eschbach, @ docherbe@optonline.net or (845) 373-9138 Schedule subject to change. Many of our members had a great time socializing; the food and drinks were excellent and so was the music! Looking forward to the tri-mountain Vermont trip with our trip leader, Felice Hunter; three mountains to be skied at are Stratton, Bromley and Magic. Other trips coming up are Tahoe, Mt. Snow, Schweitzer and Attitash. Some day trips we will be enjoying are at Hunter, Bellayre, Catamount, Butternut, Greek Peak, Windham and Thunder Ridge. 4 Club News Get Your Discount Tickets Here! There s no reason to pay full price for lift tickets. There are many, many ways to reduce your lift ticket spending, and the HVSC website is the place to find out how. Just go to the recently revised Discounts page at hudsonvalleyskiclub.org/discounts. Council Days These are deep discount days at many ski areas in the Northeast. The compilation under the title, Ski Council Discounts, combines NJ Ski and Snowboard Council (NJSSC) and NY Capital District Ski Council (NYCD- SC) discount days. The list is sortable by clicking on a column heading and searchable by entering the resort name or year/month in the search box. Advance Purchase Lift Tickets HVSC s representative to the NJSSC (Jim Gahn) administers this program. See program guidelines, available ski resorts, prices, and order form in the Members Only section of the website. Event Committee After a number of years of service Gwen Cardarelli, Ginny May, and Ellen Kelly have stepped down from the Events Committee. We are looking for their replacement(s). The committee is responsible for organizing the yearly Installation Party as well as being a clearinghouse for events planned by our members to prevent scheduling conflicts. The committee also encourages members to plan events of interest to the membership and make sure the information is posted in the newsletter. We thank Gwen, Ginny, and Ellen for all they have done. They are willing to provide guidance to whomever volunteers to chair this important committee. Mountain Specials A number of ski areas offer season long special pricing to HVSC members. Potter Brothers stores in Kingston and Fishkill. Daily ticket savings up to $31 per ticket. Flex tickets with predetermined dates provide the lowest prices for that day. Go to www.potterbrothers.com/discount-tickets/ for Flex tickets pricing and dates. In addition, for the seniors among us, check the ski area price lists for senior discounts. Club Events Ski Improvement Days Are you still finding yourself skiing in the back seat? Or maybe getting out of control, or going too fast? Does anxiety or the fear factor set in and make you stop to re-group? These are certainly not uncommon for many of us, and they can disrupt our demeanor and skiing flow, assuming we have one! Even expert skiers acknowledge experiencing occasional quirks. A possible solution: Identify why we react to what we think may be an uncomfortable or out-of-control situation. Can it be as simple as being out of balance or position? Add to that the common quote that skiing is a huge mind game. Our ski club s certified professional ski instructors can help you fine tune your skiing skills to lessen those frustrating moments that you have experienced. Check out the list of scheduled Ski Improvement Days and take your skiing to the next level. Sun. Jan 7, Belleayre For updates, follow us on HVSC Facebook. 6 A Well-Deserved Thank You Dear Claudette, Since having joined the Hudson Valley Ski Club I ve several times experienced and enjoyed the privilege and the pleasure of being your guest for your highly regarded summer and December hospitality and entertainment events. They will also long retain the memory of going home after any one of your parties and saying Wow! Claudette did it again. After the Holidays Party! Club News 13 HVSC Ski Trips Cancellation/Refund Policy Minimum cancellation penalty is $100 for week long trips and $25 for shorter trips. Cancellation requests must be in writing and will take effect the date they are received by the trip leader. Penalties vary from trip to trip. Anyone who cancels a trip will be assessed penalties as per our contract with the vendor. Whatever the club loses, the person who cancels will lose plus the $100 cancellation penalty, however, the penalty will not exceed the total cost of the trip. Refunds will not be issued until after the final accounting of the trip. The Trip Committee strongly suggests participants purchase trip insurance. The price for trip insurance runs approximately 7% of the trip cost. An option to purchase trip insurance for any reason may be available. If you are interested in trip insurance please let the trip leader know at the time of sign up.
