1 2 Continental Dance Club April, 2016 Volume 56, Number 4 Dance Instruction April From our Dance Instructor Chairman Freda Hutcheson Our April lesson for intermediate and advanced dancers is West Coast Swing. The instructor for April is Tracy Martin. She began teaching dance ten years ago. She says you can never get bored studying dance because there are so many styles. Tracy recently became the manager of Ballare Ballroom in Carmel. The beginner s dance class is East Coast Swing and will be taught in the small ballroom. Bess & Dennis Dworski will be our member-volunteer teachers for April. The dance lesson in the small ballroom is free with paid admission to the dance. Our members choose to volunteer because of their love for dancing. We thank our last month s instructors, Ed Godby Schwab and Diana Miller, for teaching the Cha Cha, as well as our volunteers, Dave and Sue Berard, who taught the Tango to our beginners. Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. Please, no video recording of the lessons without permission of the instructor. Welcome New Members Sema Kappes Tanya Marshall Carol Young page 4

Continental Dance Club April, 2016 Volume 56, Number 4 CDC News and Announcements Please be courteous during our club announcements. Refrain from talking while the person making announcements is at the microphone. We make every effort to keep announcements brief and informative and most members and guests would like to be able to hear them. Thank you! Do you own a business? Consider running an ad in our newsletter or talk to a friend who might be interested in running an ad. Our newsletter reaches more than 300 people and the rates are quite reasonable. Substantial savings in monthly rates can be realized by running an ad for six months or a year. Your ad does not need to be copy ready. We will work with you. Please contact Darrel Trexler at 317-722-0133 or brdancer47@att.net. DANCES IN THE AREA For the most accurate information on these dances check the dance group web page. Continental Dance Club April, 2016 Volume 56, Number 4 My CDC by Bill Culley I was raised in Peoria, Illinois and moved to Indiana to pursue my Ph.D. in biochemistry at Purdue. I ve been a Hoosier ever since. After finishing school, I did research on biochemical factors related to mental disabilities for a number of years and after retiring from fulltime employment, I taught organic and biochemistry at IUPUI part time for ten years. I am fortunate to have two wonderful daughters, Bonnie in Noblesville and Connie in Fort Lauderdale. They have blessed me with nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In 1990, I saw an ad in the paper for ballroom dance lessons and with some trepidation I decided to give it a try. After three months of lessons, a friend told me about the Continental Dance Club. It was a little scary walking in that first night. I got there in time for the lesson and immediately saw that the other people were catching on much faster than me. In fact, I wasn t catching on at all. By now, I was self-conscious and unsure of myself. Nevertheless, I had the good fortune to sit at a table with three very nice looking ladies, Mary, Phyllis, and Shirley. They were all very charming but it was Mary with whom I immediately felt a connection. As soon as I asked her to dance, I saw that she was a much better dancer than me, but she didn t seem to notice that as I stumbled along beside her. I didn t want to waste any time so was thrilled later that evening when she agreed to go to a play with me. Now my self-confidence was returning. Even though I wasn t dancing well, I had a date with this gorgeous lady sitting beside me. We continued dating for a year and were then married. We had 21 exciting years together until she passed away in 2011. We always kept Sunday open for the Continental Dance Club. I ve been pleased to serve the CDC in a number of capacities over the years including newsletter editor from 1996 to 2012, creator of the website and webmaster from 2002 to 2012, and Board president from 2002 to 2005. Dancing with the wonderful ladies of the Continental Dance Club each Sunday is still a highlight of each week. page 7

Continental Dance Club April, 2016 Volume 56, Number 4 Recognition Night Many of our volunteers were recognized for their numerous contributions to our club. Thanks to all our volunteers. Pictured here: some of our past Kings, Queens, their escorts, and Our Ambassadors Dance Fundraiser for Kids Dance Outreach Indy Dancers invites you to a special benefit dance for Kids Dance Outreach (KDO) on Tuesday, April 26, at the Moose Lodge #17, 7055 East 16th St., Indianapolis.
