For Immediate Release Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015 SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (1-0) at CINCINNATI BENGALS (1-0) Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015 10:00 a.m. PT Paul Brown Stadium (Cincinnati, Ohio) The San Diego Chargers will play their first road contest of the 2015 season when they head to Cincinnati s Paul Brown Stadium to face the Bengals in their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is 10 a.m. PT. Both teams opened their seasons with victories. The Chargers took advantage of a record-setting day by wide receiver Keenan Allen and topped the Detroit Lions, 33-28, at Qualcomm Stadium. The Bengals opened their 2015 campaign with a 33-13 road victory over the Oakland Raiders at the O.co. Coliseum. BOLTS CLIMB OUT OF BIG HOLE TO DEFEAT LIONS The Chargers overcame an early 18-point deficit and rallied to defeat the Detroit Lions, 33-28, in their 2015 season opener at Qualcomm Stadium. It tied for the second-largest deficit overcome in franchise history. The Lions jumped out to a 21-3 lead midway through the second quarter with two offensive touchdowns and a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown by safety Grover Quinn before the Chargers started chipping away. Danny Woodhead, playing in his first regular-season game since last September, started the comeback with a nine-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to bring the Bolts within 21-10. The Chargers got the ball to start the third quarter and scored on a Josh Lambo field goal to get within 21-13. The teams traded turnovers on the next three possessions, including a diving interception by rookie outside linebacker Kyle Emanuel and another by cornerback Patrick Robinson. Robinson s pick helped set up a 12-yard touchdown catch by Stevie Johnson, his first as a Charger, and it brought the Bolts to within a point, 21-20. On the ensuing possession, the Bolts defense came away with a three-and-out as Manti Te o and Cordarro Law combined for a key third-down stop to force a Lions punt. The Chargers then drove 70 yards in seven plays and took their first lead of the afternoon when Ladarius Green caught a 13-yard scoring pass from Philip Rivers, just one play after catching a 21-yarder to the Lions 13. Up 26-21, the Chargers defense came up with another big stop before the offense marched 11 plays and 86 yards for the backbreaking touchdown drive. Keenan Allen, who tied a franchise record with 15 catches against the Lions, had five catches on the drive, including a 20-yarder on a 3rd-and-19. Johnson also continued his large afternoon, hauling in a 34 yarder early in the drive before snatching a 14 yarder to the one on a 3rd-and-3 that set up Woodhead s second touchdown of the game for a 33-21 lead. Detroit scored a late touchdown to snap a 30-0 Chargers run and get back within 33-28, but the Lions failed to recover the onside kick attempt and the Bolts ran out the clock for the win. KEY NOTES FROM THE CHARGERS-LIONS GAME Philip Rivers completed 35 of 42 passes (83.3 percent) for 404 yards and two touchdowns for a 102.8 passer rating. It was his team-record seventh-career 400-yard game. His 404 yards were the most by a Chargers quarterback on opening day in franchise history (Dan Fouts, 354 vs. the New York Jets on Sept. 4, 1983). Rivers effort tied for the 13th most prolific passing day in franchise history (Jim Harbaugh vs. Minnesota Nov. 28, 1999). Rivers completed a team-record 20 straight passes to close out the game. He completed his last nine passes in the third quarter and all 11 in the fourth quarter. During that stretch he threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Rivers 35 completions vs. Detroit tied for third-most in a game in team history. The Lions contest marked Rivers seventh career 400-yard game. His 83.3 percent completion mark tied for the third highest of his career and the sixth highest in a game in franchise history. Keenan Allen s 15 catches (166 yards) tied Pro Football Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow (at Green Bay October 7, 1984) for the franchise s single-game record. Allen s 166 yards also were a career high. His 15 catches also tied for 11th-most all-time in a game. continued next page 2015 REGULAR-SEASON SCHEDULE & RESULTS Sun. Sept. 13 DETROIT Qualcomm Stadium W 33-28 Sun. Allen s 15 catches were the most by any player on NFL Kickoff Weekend since the 1970 merger. Malcom Floyd had one catch against the Lions for 29 yards. On that catch, he went over 5,000 yards for his career. Danny Woodhead s two rushing touchdowns, tied for the most by a Chargers player on opening day. Ladarius Green had a career-best five catches vs. the Lions. His 13-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter gave the Chargers their first lead of the game (26-21) and helped erase an 18-point deficit, tied for the secondgreatest come-from-behind win in team history. The Chargers 483 total yards against the Lions were the most by the team on opening day since a 500-yard effort against Miami on Sept. 7, 1986. Cornerback Patrick Robinson s interception was the 10th of his career. Rookie linebacker Kyle Emanuel had an outstanding all-around day against Detroit with an interception, a pressure that led to Robinson s interception, a 13-yard sack on a third-down to cap off a three-and-out and two tackles for loss. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Philip Rivers comes into Sunday s game tied with Dan Fouts for 16th alltime and tied with Fouts for the franchise record with 254 career touchdown passes. With his next touchdown pass, Rivers will move into a tie for 14th all-time with Sonny Jurgensen (255). Rivers is expected to play in his 150th career game on Sunday. Fouts played in 181 career games for the Chargers. Rivers comes into Sunday s game having completed his last 20 pass attempts, a franchise record. The NFL record for consecutive completions is 24. It was set by former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb during a two-game stretch in 2004 against the New York Giants (10) and Green Bay Packers (14). Peyton Manning completed 23 straight in 2008 for the league s second-longest streak, while Joe Montana (1987), Mark Brunell (2006), David Carr (2006) and Matt Ryan (2012) all completed 22 straight for the league s third-best mark. Rivers ranks 20th in NFL history with 37,059 career passing yards. He needs just 217 more to pass McNabb, who ranks 19th with 37,276 career yards. Number 18 on the all-time list is former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason with 37,920 career yards. Rivers trails Esiason by 861 yards for 18th. Rivers ranks second in team history with 3,060 career completions. He needs 237 more to match the team record of 3,297 held by Fouts. Rivers has thrown three or more touchdown passes in a game 39 times. The Chargers are 30-9 in those games. Rivers has started 145 straight games. It s the NFL s second-longest active streak behind Eli Manning s 169. Rivers streak is the second-longest in team history. Rivers has posted a passer rating of 120 or higher 38 times during his career. The Chargers are 35-3 (.921) in those games. He s also posted a rating of 130.0 or higher 21 times and the Chargers are 21-0 in those games. Rivers completion percentage, touchdown and interception totals have been very good since the arrival of Mike McCoy in San Diego in 2013. Among quarterbacks who played in every game since the start of the 13 season, Rivers owns the second-highest completion percentage (68.5) and the third-highest passer rating (99.8). Meanwhile, his 65 touchdown passes are tied with Indianapolis Andrew Luck for third-most. In 2013, Rivers established the highest season completion percentage in franchise history (.695) and in 2014, he posted the second-highest (.662). This season, Rivers leads the NFL in completion percentage (83.3 pct.) after Week 1. Rivers has 89 regular-season wins, most by a starting QB in franchise history. He s 89-56 (.614) for his career. Rivers is 36-18 (.667) as a starter in regular-season AFC West games. In 54 games, he s completed 1,060 of 1,674 (63.3 pct.) for 13,219 yards with 86 touchdowns and 49 interceptions for a 92.7 passer rating. Rivers is one of the NFL s top late-season quarterbacks. Since taking over as the Bolts starting quarterback in 2006, he has guided the Chargers to a record of 34-9 (.791 winning percentage) in regular-season games played in December and January. All-time, Rivers ranks fifth in passer rating in December & January (95.7), and he has a 77-to-30 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Rivers is not only great in December and January, but in the second half of the season overall. Throughout his career, Rivers is 54-25 (.684) as a starter in games played after Nov. 1 and his 95.3 career passer rating in Games 9-16 of the regular season ranks seventh all-time. Malcom Floyd has 292 career catches, ranking 10th in franchise history. Floyd needs 81 receptions to catch Wes Chandler (373) for ninth. Floyd currently has 31 career touchdown catches. He needs two more to move into the team s all-time top 10. With 292 career catches good for 5,018 yards, Floyd s 17.2-yard average is fourth in team history (min. 250 receptions), just 0.3 yards shy of the thirdhighest average in team annals. Eric Weddle has 19 career interceptions. He needs two more to climb into the team s top 10 for career picks. Weddle also has 290 career interception return yards and needs 19 more to enter the team s all-time top 10. Mike Scifres is expected to appear in his 181st game on Sunday, which would tie Fouts for fifth in team history. CHARGERS-BENGALS SERIES HISTORY The Chargers and Bengals have tangled 34 times and the Chargers lead the all-time series, 20-14. Two of the meetings have occured in the postseason, including a 27-10 Chargers victory in the 2013 AFC Wild Card Playoffs. That win ended a three-game Bengals win streak in the series. From 1992-2009, the Chargers had a stretch where they won eight of 10. The Chargers are 10-7 in games contested in the Queen City. CHARGERS-BENGALS CONNECTIONS Chargers assistant offensive line coach Andrew Dees spent some time as a tackle with the Bengals in 1992. Defensive end Ricardo Mathews played collegiately at the University of Cincinnati. Long snapper Mike Windt is a native of Cincinnati and he too played for the Bearcats. Bolts wide receiver Keenan Allen and Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones were former college teammates at Cal and the two remain very close friends. Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco was a collegiate wide receiver at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. Assistant special teams coach Craig Aukerman is a native of McComb, Ohio. He was a two-time NAIA All-America defensive back and wide receiver at the University of Findlay (Ohio). He later worked as a graduate assistant at Miami, Ohio during the 2001-02 seasons. Quarterbacks coach Nick Siriani won three NCAA Division III National Championships (2000-02) as a wide receiver at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. Sirianni also spent one season (2005) playing in the Atlantic Indoor Football League with the Canton (Ohio) Legends. Defensive quality control coach Chris Shula played linebacker at Miami, Ohio where he played on three MAC East championship teams. In 2014, Shula was the defensive coordinator at John Carroll. Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese is the son of former Chargers assistant coach Ernie Zampese. Bengals cornerback Leon Hall hails from the northern San Diego suburb of Vista. He prepped at Vista High School. Several other Bengals players have Southern California ties including linebackers Chris Carter (Fontana, Calif.) and Rey Maualuga (USC), wide receiver Marvin Jones (Fontana), cornerback Josh Shaw (Palmdale, Calif. and USC) and safety Derron Smith (Banning, Calif.). NOTEWORTHY VS. THE BENGALS The Chargers had their most productive offensive day in team history (661 total yards) during a game against the Bengals on Dec. 20, 1982. Dan Fouts, announcing this week s game for CBS, was the quarterback that day. In 2006, the Chargers faced the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium and overcame a 21-point deficit to win the game, 49-41. It tied the greatest comeback win in franchise history. The Chargers trailed the Bengals 28-7 in the third quarter of the game. The Bolts matched that 21-point mark last December in a 38-35 overtime win in San Francisco.

When the Chargers and Bengals met in the regular season at Qualcomm Stadium in 2013, Keenan Allen recorded game-highs in catches (eight) and yards (106). Tight end Ladarius Green had a 30-yard touchdown catch in the game as well. When the teams met again five weeks later in the AFC Playoffs, Green had a four-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter that gave the Bolts a 14-10 lead. Defensively in that game, Eric Weddle had an outstanding all-around game with an interception, a special teams tackle inside 20 (16-yard line) after a punt, a third down tackle for loss to force a punt and a 27-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter that helped set up a field goal. When the Chargers and Bengals met in the 2013 AFC Wild Card Playoffs, Donald Butler led the team with nine tackles, including two for loss. Butler made a huge second-quarter play to strip Cincinnati s Giovani Bernard at the four-yard line en route to apparent score. Instead of a touchdown that would have given the Bengals a 14-7 lead, the Chargers went on to outscore the Bengals 20-0 in the second half and win 27-10. In that same game, fellow linebacker Melvin Ingram had an interception and led the team with four quarterback pressures. It was the first interception of Ingram s career. Corey Liuget also played well defensively, leading the defensive line in tackles while recording a sack and a tackle for loss. That same day, Mike Scifres punted the ball extremely well, posting a 42.2-yard net average. On six punts, Scifres forced three fair catches while the Bengals tallied just six total return yards on Scifres other three punts. Also on special teams in that game, Darrell Stuckey tallied three tackles, including two for loss. Playing for St. Louis in 2011, Kellen Clemens had a career-high 25 completions in a game against Cincinnati. Playing for Buffalo in 2010, Stevie Johnson had 137 yards receiving and a career-best three touchdown catches vs. the Bengals. In 2006, Philip Rivers was named NBC Football Night in America s Player of the Day and SportsIllustrated.com s Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 337 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-41 come-from-behind win at Cincinnati. Rivers helped the Chargers overcome deficits of 21-0 and 28-7 while leading the squad to a team-record 42 points in the second half. Rivers threw three touchdown passes in the second half. He was 19 of 25 passing for 291 yards and three touchdowns after the team had fallen behind 21-0 and three of his incompletions were intentional throwaways. In that same game, Malcom Floyd was named the Chargers Alumni Player of the Week after making a season-long 46-yard touchdown catch. Playing for Houston in 2008, Jacoby Jones was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after having a 73-yard punt return for a touchdowns early in a Texans 35-6 win over the Bengals. NEVER A DOUBT In two of their last three games (dating back to the 2014 season), the Chargers have logged two of the greatest comeback wins in franchise history. Last Sunday in the 2015 season opener, the Chargers overcame an 18-point second-quarter deficit (21-3) to rally for a 33-28 win. It tied for the secondgreatest deficit overcome in franchise history. Last December 20 in San Francisco, the Chargers overcame a 21-point third quarter deficit (28-7) before rallying for a 38-35 win in overtime. NEW FACES The Chargers added a number of key new coaches and players during the offseason. Eighteen of 53 players on this week s opening roster, more than one-third of the roster, are new to the team. On the coaching side, Mike Nolan took over for the departed Joe Barry (Washington) as the Chargers linebackers coach, while Chris Shula took over for Chad Grimm (Washington) as the quality control coach for the defense. The list of new players includes tackle Joe Barksdale (St. Louis), guard Orlando Franklin (Denver), tackle Chris Hairston (Buffalo), wide receiver Stevie Johnson (San Francisco), wide receiver and kick/punt returner Jacoby Jones (Baltimore), cornerback Patrick Robinson (New Orleans), defensive tackle Mitch Unrein (Denver) and safety Jimmy Wilson (Miami). The Chargers also added five rookies through the 2015 NFL Draft. That group includes University of Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon (first round), University of Miami inside linebacker Denzel Perryman (second round), Texas State cornerback Craig Mager (third round), North Dakota State outside linebacker Kyle Emanuel (fifth round) and University of Arkansas defensive end Darius Philon (sixth round). HEALTHY RETURNS The Chargers have five players back who finished the 2014 season on the Reserve-Injured list. That group includes linebacker Donald Butler (elbow), guard Johnnie Troutman (knee), punter Mike Scifres (clavicle), cornerback Jason Verrett (shoulder) and running back Danny Woodhead (ankle). A CLOSER LOOK AT THE BOLTS FREE AGENT ADDITIONS Joe Barksdale spent his rookie season with Oakland after being drafted by the Raiders in the third round. He played in all 16 games as a rookie, primarily on special teams, but he was waived early during his second season. The St. Louis Rams claimed Barksdale and he played sparingly for them in 2012, but three weeks into the 2013 season, he was inserted into the starting lineup at right tackle and he remained there for 13 of the Rams final 14 games. In 2014, Barksdale started all 16 games for the Rams at right tackle. Orlando Franklin came from Denver where he originally joined the Broncos as a second-round pick (46th overall) in 2011. During his first four seasons, Franklin started 70 of a possible 71 games, including playoffs. From 2011-13, he started 53 of 54 games at right tackle and last season, he started all 17, including playoffs, at right guard. Chris Hairston is a former fourth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills. Hairston has played in 41 career games. He missed the entire 2013 season, but returned to play in all 16 games for the Bills in 2014. Stevie Johnson is a former seventh-round pick of the Buffalo Bills (2008). He joins the Chargers having caught 336 career passes for 4,267 yards (12.7 average) and 31 touchdowns. From 2010-12, Johnson strung together three straight 1,000-yard seasons in Buffalo, the first player in Bills history to do so. The run included a 2010 campaign in which he racked up 82 catches for 1,073 yards and 10 scores, all career highs. Jacoby Jones has racked up exactly 10,000 all-purpose yards in eight NFL regular seasons. He spent his first five NFL seasons (2007-11) in Houston and the last three with Baltimore (2012-14). Jones played a prominent role in the Ravens reaching and winning Super Bowl XLVII. Jones has scored 26 career touchdowns, including playoffs. He has 16 touchdown catches, six kickoff returns and four punt returns. His nine kickoff and punt return touchdowns in the regular season are tied for sixth all-time and his five kickoff return touchdowns are tied for eighth. Jones also holds the NFL record for the longest kickoff return in Super Bowl history (108 yards). Patrick Robinson was a first-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints (32nd overall) in 2010. Robinson played in 58 games over five seasons in New Orleans, totaling 185 tackles, 46 passes defensed and nine interceptions. Mitch Unrein signed with Houston as an undrafted rookie in 2010. He was released by the Texans at the end of training camp and that October, the Denver Broncos, his hometown team, signed him to their practice squad. Unrein spent the last 11 weeks of the season on the Broncos practice squad and a year later, he earned a spot on the team s active roster. Over the next four years (2011-14), Unrein played in 60 games for the Broncos, including Super Bowl XLVIII vs. Seattle on Feb. 2, 2014. Jimmy Wilson, a San Diego native, was a seventh-round pick (235th overall) of the Miami Dolphins in 2011. From 2011-14, Wilson played in 60 games and made 21 starts for the Dolphins. He saw action on both defense and special teams. Wilson blocked three kicks during his Dolphins tenure, tying the franchise record. Wilson also recorded four interceptions, including a game-clinching pick against Atlanta in 2013. His career totals include 137 tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles, 16 passes defensed and 17 stops on special teams. A CLOSER LOOK AT THE BOLTS DRAFT CLASS All five of the Chargers 2015 draft choices made the team s opening-day 53-man roster. Melvin Gordon won the 2014 Doak Walker Award as the nation s top running back. Runner up for the 2014 Heisman Trophy, Gordon rushed for 4,915 yards and scored 49 total touchdowns, both third in school history. He averaged an FBS-record (Football Bowl Subdivision) 7.8 yards per carry for his career and finished his career at Wisconsin third in career rushing yards and total touchdowns. Denzel Perryman was an All-America and All-ACC pick who racked up 351 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles and two interceptions. He was the University of Miami s leading tackler each of his last two seasons, tallying 108 stops as a junior in 2013 and 110 as a senior in 2014. Craig Mager was an All-Sun Belt and All-WAC performer at Texas State where he recorded eight career interceptions along with 211 tackles, 47 passes defensed, 9.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. The Bison went 58-3 during Emanuel s career in the process of capturing four conference titles and four NCAA championships. Darius Philon was a second-team All-SEC pick as a redshirt sophomore in 2014. Philon collected 92 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in two seasons at Arkansas. Dzubnar attended Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo where he was a consensus All-America and first-team All-Big Sky pick as a senior after logging a school-record 167 tackles. Dzubnar finished sixth in voting for the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award as the top player in FCS. That award was actually won by fellow Chargers linebacker Kyle Emanuel who played at North Dakota State. Josh Lambo beat out veteran Nick Novak for the Chargers kicking job. Lambo was a second-team All-SEC pick as a senior at Texas A&M in 2014. He hit 21 of 25 career field goal tries for a school-record 84.0 conversion percentage. Lambo took an unconventional path to reach the NFL. Prior to attending A&M, Lambo played professional soccer as a goalie in the MLS. He was drafted by FC Dallas in the first round (eighth overall) in 2008 and he spent four years with FC Dallas. Lambo also spent time with the United States Men s National Under-20 Team, competing for that squad at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009. Tyrell Williams is a 6-4, 205 pound wide receiver from Western Oregon. A three-time first-team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference pick for the Wolves, Williams finished his career as Western s all-time leader with 165 catches, good for 2,792 yards and 21 touchdowns.
