Highland dance require both athletic and artistic skill. In competition, dancers are judged on three elements: timing, technique and general deportment. 79th Embro Highland Games 24th Annual Memorial Tug-of-War Championship This year the Zorra Caledonian Society celebrates the 79th Anniversary of the Embro Highland Games and the 24th Anniversary of the Memorial Tug-of-War Championship. Welcome to the great sport of Tug-of-War. With the teams we have coming today you should see some great, exciting, interesting pulling. Tug-of-War is one of the oldest sports known world wide. The history of tug-of-war goes back hundreds of years. Carvings found on caves in Egypt indicate that tug-of-war was a sport being pulled in 1500 B.C. July 1st Tug-of-War Memorial Championship results for the years 2008-2013 show that the Ladies' Championship was won by four different teams in that time. The Men's team from Mt. Vernon Wisconsin was the consistent winner of the Men's Championship for those six years. Tug-of-War Hall of Fame One induction will take place at the Games this year. They will join 10 inducted over the years. The Mighty Men of Zorra, Ruby Kopp, Tom Kempel, Melbourne J. Monteith, Bill Scanlan, Ron Totten, Mark Rotondi, Harry DeWetering, Murray Schlotzhauer and Jim Gibb. Who will be inducted this year? Since its beginning in 1993 the Memorial Tug-of-War Championship has become one of the most recognized & prestigious tug-of-war events in North America, drawing teams from the U.S.A. on a regular basis, and on two occasions, teams from Taiwan. Zorra Caledonian Society Wee Shoppe: Looking for the perfect gift for yourself or someone you know? The Zorra Caledonian Society created its own tartan in 2012 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Zorra Caledonian Society. The shades of green represent the fertile, rolling hills of the 'Zorra Highlands' that surround Embro, Ontario. The black shows the strength and endurance of the Zorra Caledonian Society on the occasion of its 75th year. The white represents honour and purity in its actions. The red is for the blood sacrificed by preceding generations so their descendants could prosper in a free country. Items to purchase: Tartan Coasters (four) $10, Youth Tie $ 30, Tartan Tie $35, Tartan Cap $40 & Tartan Scarf $50 Wee Shoppe is located in the Visitor and Volunteer Services Tent. Stop by the Visitor & Volunteer Services tent between 11 am and 4 pm and get a Selfie of you holding onto the bagpipes! Thanks to the members of the Ingersoll Pipe Band who will be lending a hand to help visitors with this unique experience!

FEDERAL WHITE CEMENT Corporate Sponsor of the 2016 Memorial Tug-of-War Championship Federal White Cement is proud to sponsor the 2016 Memorial Tug-of-War Championship, and the 79th Embro Highland Games. We commend the dedication of the Zorra Caledonian Society in continuing the strong tradition of the Highland Games, the preservation of its culture and history, along with providing a fun day for the whole family. Federal White Cement is in fact a family business itself. In 1976, the Doumet family developed plans to build a cement plant producing specialty white cement, and by 1979 operations were under way. From modest beginnings, dedicated employees and plant modernization, Federal White Cement is now one of the most efficient white cement plants in the world. Federal White employs approximately 70 individuals residing in various local communities including Embro, Woodstock, Ingersoll and many others. Our employees are instrumental in our success, and many that were employed back in 1979 are still employed with the company. The plant, located in Zorra Township, is the only white cement manufacturer in Canada. Much of the product produced is exported to the United States. The white cement product is virtually identical to the traditional Portland cement, except that the product is pure white in colour. The product has a varied range of uses, including precast, pool, manufactured brick and stone, and other architectural finishes. Some of the applications of our products can be found at: The Caude-Robillard Sports Complex in Montreal, QC Swimming Complexes for the 1996 Summer Olympics, Atlanta, GA The Hollywood Star Walk of Fame, Hollywood, CA Part of the success of the Federal White is its strategic location to limestone, which is the main ingredient in cement. Zorra Township is blessed with a significant deposit of high quality limestone, estimated to be in the billions of tons. We wish to thank the Zorra Caledonian Society for the opportunity to support the Embro Highland Games, and wish a fun day for all!!! Federal White Cement

ZORRA CALEDONIANS Travelled to Scotland August 6 to 16, 2015 Last August, past president Ron Marshall and his wife Wendy lead 35 Zorra Caledonian members and their guests on a tour of Scotland. After spending a day exploring Glasgow, travellers headed into the highlands. Some highlights included, Eilean Donan Castle (pictured above), The Isle of Skye, Urquhart Castle, Dunrobin Castle, the Culloden Battle Field, Stirling Caste, the Bannockburn Battle Experience and a distillery or two. Attending the Ballater Highland Games gave Caledonians the chance to compare our games with one in Scotland! The trip concluded with the opportunity to see the amazing Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. Those who travelled with the Zorra Caledonian Society were grateful for the opportunity and a huge thank you to Wendy and Ron for taking on the challenge to organize this trip!
