Welcome to 2015 at Woden Valley Gymnastics Club If you are joining the gym for the first time, then welcome to our family. We hope that you enjoy your time with us. If you are already a part of our family, then welcome back, it is really good that you continue to support us. Like all families we have rules but we hope you do not find them too onerous and understand why we have them. We are a non-profit, incorporated sporting organisation and, as such, the only money that we receive comes from your fees and the occasional grant from the ACT Government. Any additional funding comes from our own fund raising efforts and we rely heavily on all our parents assisting in this area. Any funds that we manage to create go towards helping our gymnasts go to inter-state and National competitions and to purchasing new equipment. There are a number of changes to our programs of which you should be aware. We will be trialing a new system within our non-competitive gymnastics stream throughout first Semester. The goal is to provide your child with the level of coaching suited to their individual abilities. Included in this will be a progress report provided at the end of the semester as a guide for you and the coaches as to the progress of your child s gymnastic skills. This progress report will also act as a guide as to whether your child needs to progress to a new level or if they need to continue working on their skills within the level they are already in. This change incorporates: Standardising the Recreational Program into the Gymnastics Australia Gymnastics for All Program, so that it is the same Australia-wide. We use our LaunchPad accreditation to incorporate circuits in most of our lessons. The circuits are designed to be used by most classes so our coaches can teach both basic skills to our younger gymnasts and the more complex skills to our older, more experienced gymnasts. We have stopped using Levels to describe the progressions for our Recreational classes. They have been changed to reflect the skill levels involved: Level 0 is now Beginner; Level 1 is now Junior Elementary; Level 2 is now Junior Intermediate; Level 3 is now Senior Elementary; Level 4 is now Senior Intermediate; Level 5 is now Advanced Intermediate. Coach of the Year Every year, after considerable deliberation, we select one of our younger coaches as our Coach of the Year. They are required to have shown a high degree of enthusiasm and responsibility when they are in the gym, a willingness to do that little bit extra with their class and visible dedicated professionalism when they are teaching skills and routines. The coaches who we believe have made an outstanding contribution to the Club for the whole year were: Female Coach of the Year for 2014: Claudia Robinson; Male Coach of the Tear for 2014: Lachlan Puzey; Junior Female Coach of the Year for 2014: Brooke Tierney; Junior Male Coach of the year for 2014: Joshua Reis. 3 Fund Raising Due to unforeseen circumstances our Fund Raising Sub-committee has ceased to function. Last year, led by one of our parents, Martha Allen, the sub-committee did a fantastic job and left us with a profit of nearly $19,000.00. It is our intention to use this money to purchase new equipment for all our programs, things like spotting boxes, mats and other small items, as well as supporting Club members who make ACT and Club Teams and who have to travel inter- State for competitions. To try and make things easier, we are going to appoint one of our staff members to co-ordinate the fund raising efforts. This will be one of the jobs that were delegating to Kirsten Jelfs but she will need assistance, it is not a job for just one person. The fund raising function involves making sure that we have volunteers to run our barbeques on Saturdays and when we have competitions at the gym, running functions like movie nights, trivia nights, Club discos, etc, selling chocolates and a myriad of other options. If you would like to help Kirsten, she would love to hear from you. Please contact Monica at office@wodenvalley.net or Kirsten herself at Kirsten@wodenvalley.net and express your interest. The more people, the easier it is! Kindergym Welcome to Kindergym at Woden Valley Gymnastics Club for 2015. We are looking forward to a busy year ahead, with lots of fun themes and exciting events. The themes for first term are: Weeks 1 and 2: Fun at the Beach Weeks 3 and 4: Shapes Weeks 5 and 6: Autumn Weeks 7 and 8: Sesame Street Weeks 9 and 10: Easter Throughout the year we will have our annual Pyjama Week Fundraiser and of course the Gym Extravaganza will be later in the year. We invite you to have fun with your children and explore their many talents under the guidance and supervision of our highly trained coaches in a great facility. Enjoy Term 1! Naomi Nye Birthday Parties We are happy to announce that we are starting to run Birthday Parties in 2015. Have your guests constantly entertained and kept busy for 1½ hours with time at the end for food and drink. Please see flyer in Club or speak to the office for more information. We can take bookings for most Sundays throughout the year but you will need to book early to secure your place. Sit back and watch the Birthday child have fun with friends while they are supervised playing in the whole gym area. ACRO All of the National Level Acro groups will be actively recruiting in the next few months not only for competitors in our Level 4+ groups, but also for beginners to join the development squad. If you would like to try Acro please talk to me. The Acro program will also be looking to group a men's group (4 boys/men) for next year s competition season. So if you know of any interested boys/men (no upper age limitation) please contact me, the Program Manager. Quintin Gravatt

MAG NLP Welcome back and HAPPY NEW YEAR. Hopefully everyone is feeling well rested after the Christmas break and ready for another busy year. Here are just a few things that we have planned over the next few months for the boys: Profile Testing (strength and flexibility testing) ACT National Levels 3-6 Clinic Skills assessments Senior level trials for nationals As well as these events the gymnasts and their coaches will hard at work in preparation for the next comp season. We will also be sending three of soon-to-be champions to a Clinic at the AIS, Jonathon Allen, Blair Stewart and Ky Trotter. Best wishes to all parents, gymnasts and coaches for 2015. Steve Flanagan WAG ALP Welcome back to 2015! If you are new to our program, I welcome you to the WVGC family! One of the immediate changes that you will notice is that WAG no longer have a National Levels Program. It is now called the Australian Levels Program of ALP for short. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year s break and are settling back into your groups. As always, last year was very busy and this year is looking much the same. I thank you in advance for your patience and support. This term I will be handing out informational packets in the form of a USB to all new WAG ALP parents, the packet includes a 2015 WAG calendar, routines, program frameworks and other introductory documents. The important documents in those packets will be emailed to veteran WAG ALP parents. I hope you all have a fantastic year with WVGC and I look forward to our time together! Kirsten Jelfs 4 Trampoline Our Trampoline classes are back on down at Soward Way in Tuggeranong. We are constantly looking for newbies and it doesn t matter if you have never done anything on trampoline before or whether you are an ex-gymnast. We have great coaches and three competition trampolines and a double mini in a super high venue. So if want to learn to bounce, to do saltos and a wide range of other skills come on down and join us. We can take you from beginner level right through to representing the ACT and possibly Australia. Just talk to Monica or Sam in the WVGC Front Office. Jack Ratz Fees A big thank you to all our parents who are now paying their fees up-front. It makes a huge difference to the way the Club operates and means that we are not wasting valuable time chasing up late fees. We are also finding that more and more families are aware of the importance of re-enrolling before the end of Term as we have a considerable number of children on our waiting lists. So remember to book in for the next Term from Week 8. If you leave it to the end of Term, chances are that the class you want will be full and you will either miss out completely or have to go to another day which may not be as suitable. Make-up Classes If you know you are going to be away for one or two classes during a Term, or even if your child is sick and misses a class, you should know that we allow up to 2 make-up classes in that Term. All you have to do is ring Monica in the Front Office and tell her that you would like your child to do a make-up lesson. She will check the rolls and help you decide which extra day you would like to come in for the make-up class. Please note that this is a little more difficult for National Levels gymnasts as their class times are set, so we are normally unable to arrange make-up classes.

Club Sponsorships Another way that we try to raise money and alleviate the financial pressure on our parents is seek corporate sponsorship. This includes: 5 1. Individual Company Support. For a donation of $1,500.00 your company logo will be placed on 20 shirts worn by our Club coaches. The shirts are given free to all of our coaches as a part of their Club uniform. They are worn whenever the coach is coaching, in the gym or at competitions. We estimate that your company logo will receive over 12,000 hours of exposure to members of the public every year. We will also include your company details in each of our Term Newsletters. This has to be the cheapest most costeffective advertising ever presented so talk with one of our senior staff! 2. Rebel Sport Season Pass. We have a deal with Rebel Sport where we can issue you a Rebel Sport card which you register on-line as a member of Woden Valley Gymnastics Club. When you present it with your purchases at any Rebels Sport store the Club receives a 5% donation which we can spend in store to purchase items that we can use in the gym. For example, in the last 12 months, we have purchased stop watches, hoops, ankle weights, rings and weights. All of this is free and means that we are not trying to push parents to pay more. The card will also give you free access to: Preferred pricing. Exclusive offers. VIP shopping nights. Invitations to special events. Previews of new items. Member s only competitions. 3. Choice Hotels Sports Program. Choice Hotels is partnering with sporting clubs and associations located in Australia and New Zealand in a program, called Choice Sports Program. It provides discounted accommodation at Choice Hotels to Clubs and their officials, employees, volunteers, sponsors, members, players and supporters and their respective immediate and wider families, friends and associates. Selected Clubs have their own code. Our code is: 00233930 When you book on-line, enter our Code in the box to receive all the benefits 4. You can book on-line at www.choicehotels.com.au or by email at sports@choicehotels.com.au You get a 15% off the Best Available Rate and the Club gets a 7% commission every time you make a booking with Choice Hotels and use our Code. Choice Hotels have over 260 hotels, inns, suites and resorts across Australia and New Zealand, with over 6300 hotels world-wide.

4. St George Bank. 6 Home loans that help you assist our gymnastics Club St George is offering a Home Loan Referral Program to parents, friends and families of the Club. It s a great way to get the home loan that works for you while raising funds for the Club. For every settled home loan that mentions the Club, St George will give a commission payment to the Club. All you have to do is mention this offer at the time of your application. Your Free Home Loan Health Check Whatever type of home loan you have, there s a good chance you ll be better off with St. George. That s why St George is offering a free home loan health check so you can see for yourself. St. George has a wide range of home loans, so they can make sure you have the home loan solution for you. Talk to Jamie McGee, Mobile Lending Manager, Canberra on 0402 396 831, or email mcgeej@stgeorge.com.au PLEASE USE THESE SPONSORSHIP DEALS TO HELP THE CLUB AND TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY ACT Sport and Recreation Grant On Monday 2 nd February, the Club President was invited by ACT Sport and Recreation to a function, hosted by the ACT Minister for Sport, Shane Rattenbury to receive a grant for the Club. The Club applied for and received $26,000.00 to help pay for the replacement of the safety floor under the Balance Beams, Pommels and Parallel Bars. The total cost for the new floor area will be over $60,000.00 and the difference will come from the mighty efforts of our fund raising parents and the equipment levy. We expect to be able to put the new floor in during the next school holidays. James Bacueti Gymnastics Australia (GA) and Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) have agreed to gymnastics (MAG) program at the AIS, starting from 4 February 2015. re-open a full-time men s artistic The aim of the National Centre of Excellence (NCE) is to improve the capacity of Australia s MAG team and athletes to achieve the ambitious performance targets which have been set for the sport of gymnastics for the remainder of the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games cycles under the Federal Government s High Performance strategy - Australia s Winning Edge (AWE). The NCE will provide residential scholarships for up to 10 senior male athletes and will be managed by Australia s MAG Head Coach, John Curtin. The coaches in the program will be Sergei Chenka, from the Queensland Academy of Sport, and Vladimir Vatkin, ex-head Coach at the Australian Institute of Sport and now coaching in Brazil. 19 year old James Bacueti from the Woden Valley Gymnastics Club (WVGC) has been selected to join the NCE. While WVGC has supported James since he was seven years of age, being the only Elite gymnast in the Club has meant that he has had difficulty comparing himself with other athletes training at that level. The NCE offers him the opportunity to train with athletes with similar goals and aspirations. As a part of this scholarship James will live-in at the AIS and will receive high level access to the world-class sports science and medical support for which the AIS is well-known. He will also receive significant support from AIS Personal Excellence staff who will support him to achieve excellence in both his elite sport and his academic and vocational pursuits when he starts at the University of Canberra this year. James aims to represent Australia at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow and wants to achieve podium finishes on his two strongest apparatus, Floor and Vault. He also wants to compete in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and is aiming to achieve podium finishes on Floor, Pommel, Vault and Parallel Bars. James coach at WVGC, Zou Li Min, was the Gold Medalist on Horizontal Bar at the 1986 World Championships, was a former MAG coach at the China Institute of Sport and was at the AIS, before starting to coach at WVGC in 1997. Li Min, who is respected as one of Australia s leading MAG coaches says that, He believes that the establishment of the NCE offers an excellent opportunity for all Australian MAG gymnasts and he is delighted that James has been offered a position in the Squad. James left the Club on Friday 30 th January after 12 years in the Club.
