When all of the granite had settled, Mike Dwhytie and his foursome of Bob & Mark Hazlett and Alex Prescott won the overall title by ¼ point. GOLF NEWS Golf Course Update The melt is finally starting so I am going to report on the good news first! The tees and fairways that I can see right now appear to be good without snow mold or winter injury but there is still more ice and snow to melt especially in the shadows caused by the hills and trees. This winter may have even hurt the ryegrass on the fairways and the Irons tee. Good news for the fairways but not for the Irons tee. The greens are a different story but it is still too early to tell. We have started taking off the solid covers and have discovered potential damage and way too much water has collected in the low lying areas (11 and 14) which is the reason for using these solid covers or the weight of the ice and duration of this downward pressure has caused the weaker Poas to suffer by Anoxia (gas buildup). We have pushed the water away from these areas and will need to cover them with permeable covers to prevent damage to viable crowns. The extent of damage is still undetermined. We will be uncovering the remaining greens with solid covers on holes 3, 8, and 4 this week. I know there is damage on green #3. The other 9 greens are under permeable covers and we will use the covers to warm up the soil and initiate growth to determine the extent of the damage. However, Poa comprises 90% of these greens and they are set so far back that it will take a couple of weeks just to know the extent of damage. Even a viable crown may develop a shoot or root but if they dry out they may still not make it. THROW OUT THE CALENDAR April 1st has come and gone but there is still lots of ice and snow to melt. Even if the greens are alive it will take time to grow and be able to withstand play. There will be temporary greens but I cannot determine how many at this time. I am also unable to determine an opening date or a date when these greens will be healed. I would not be surprised if some are not healed and back in play until the end of May or early June. The late spring is not helping and a cold spring will add insult to injury. Respectfully submitted, Keith Bartlett 2014 Masters GOLF POOL A Tradition Unlike Any Other It s time to celebrate The Masters and the 2014 Golf Season here at St. George s! CLUB NEWS DINE AWARE Italian Week The Italian Culinary Promotion was very well received. Bellissimo might be the right word! Our St. George s Room was packed every night and the addition of our accordion player gave the ambiance of a real Mediterranean bistro. The Provimi Veal Saltimboca with fresh rolled Linguini and Marsala sauce was by far the most popular menu item but the Chocolate Raspberry Tartufo did not disappoint. Our Fresh Seafood Risotto was another big hit. Looking forward to presenting another Italian Week in the future. The Food and Beverage Department are working towards implementing a new dining initiative for the upcoming golf season. Our Dine Aware program gives comprehensive training to all food and beverage staff, giving them the ability to effectively communicate with diners who have food allergies and intolerances. This aspect of the dining experience is becoming more and more prevalent in the last few years. The number of people who have gone gluten free in Canada is in the millions and climbing. Members or their guests with allergies should be able to dine at the club with added confidence, knowing that the staff is well versed on how to handle these issues. We have two months to complete all training, at which point all food and beverage staff will be Dine Aware certified. Another layer to add to this initiative is that all food coming out of the kitchen will be prepared without any peanuts in the ingredient list. No peanuts will be on site anywhere in the clubhouse. (the only service area that with have peanuts and peanut products is the Halfway House and these items will not be stored in the clubhouse). The Royal York Room nut mix will be a deluxe mixed nut without peanuts. All desserts, etc will have no peanuts in the ingredients. Friends or family members with severe peanut allergies will be able to dine with confidence at the club without the usual anxiety associated with these, sometimes, life threatening conditions. More information on the Club s Dine Aware certification will be provided in the next e-news. APRIL 4, 2014 3

CLUB NEWS Alex Muresan F&B Supervisor W e are very happy to announce the upcoming arrival of our newest F&B Supervisor, Alex Muresan. Alex will be joining our management team on April 15th as we prepare for the upcoming 2014 golf season with anticipated excitement. Alex brings to St. George s a well-rounded background with a strong focus on private club management and education. His educational highlights include a BA Law from Dimitrie Cantemir University in Romania as well as a Masters of Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management with Specialization in CMAA Club Management from the University of South Carolina. Alex started his club career as an Intern F&B Assistant Manager at Cedar Creek Racquet Club in Cashiers, North Carolina working in all job descriptions in front of house operations and as an Assistant Manager. From there Alex spent four years at Augusta Country Club in Augusta, Georgia as the Beverage Manager, with previous postings as Banquet Manager and Assistant Manager, where his focus was on performance standards, supervision and hiring of personnel and inventory controls. Taking on the F&B Manager position at Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich, New York for two years, Alex continued to oversee banquet operations, personnel and inventory costs and controls. His focus will be on supporting the execution of our banqueting events under the guidance of Jacqueline Lambert, whilst assisting in the service of our members and their guests in our dining rooms, as well as to oversee the inventory controls/ordering of all alcohol related products outside of wine. Mexican-themed Chef Station March 20-21st To enhance our food offerings in the Dragon Lounge, Chef James provided another well received event. The lounge was spruced up in Mexican attire, the Spanish music was playing and even a few Bandidos appeared out of the curling office. The ol watering hole was mixing up some tempting Margaritas. These fun themed events will appear more often next curling season. Comfort Food MENU Our Comfort Menu continues to be available throughout April. GOLF SHOP AND MEMBER NEWS HANDICAP INFORMATION Scoring Posting Record (SPR) Golf Canada requires that, for any Club that uses the Golf Canada Handicap System, that members post all scores and that the scores be available for Peer Review. In line with this, the Board of Directors has required that a 70% Score Posting Record (SPR) is required to be eligible to participate in Trophy and Prize events 2014. The 70% SPR is required for The Club Championship (all flights), Match Play Events, Member-Member, Captain s Cup/ Davis Cup. It is not required for League Play, Opening and Closing Days, WAGS and the Matrimonial. The Matrimonial is open to all members but a 70% SPR is required to qualify for prizes. Your SPR record for 2013 is available on the website, see Member Home Page/ Quick Links/SPR. The record will start anew for the 2014 season and your new record will be available one week after Opening Day. The SPR is the percent of scores posted divided by rounds played. Rounds played come from the Tee Sheet and Scores Posted are those you post either in the Golf Shop or on the website. Non-Postable Scores - If you should play a practice round or part thereof and the round should not be counted because it was not played under the Rules of Golf you can have the round removed by requesting the Golf Shop to do so or you can send the same message from the web site. Go to Member Home Page/ Golf Information/ Handicaps / Non-Postable Scores and follow the link. If you should have any questions or issues with scoring please speak to the Golf Shop staff who will be able to help or send an email to handicap@stgeorges.org.
