Commodore s Corner 3 As I mentioned in last month s letter, 2017 is the 80 th Anniversary of Squalicum Yacht Club. That s a long time for any organization, but as a social organization we ve generated a lot of material in those 80 years. Rosters, newsletters, photos, etc. Thankfully, we have a History/Archives committee that works tirelessly to maintain that history. While technically it s a committee, in reality it s pretty much a one man show. Paul has done tremendous work preserving our history. Not only has he maintained the available documents, he s also done the research to relearn some of our forgotten history. One of the things I d like to see the club do this year is to take a look at what we have and determine the best way forward to preserve it. There s an opportunity to digitize much of the collection and store it in the cloud. The cloud, for those who don t know, is a term used to describe online storage that is available anywhere. The benefit is that it is safer by being protected from disaster. If one person s hard drive crashes we don t lose everything. Another benefit is that the material can be available for viewing by all members. Unlike a traditional website content placed in the cloud can have access control. My ask to you is that you consider joining the History/Archives committee. I m hoping that this year it can be a more than a committee of one. While on the subject of committees, I believe Leanne is looking to form a committee to come up with ideas for future speakers. At the very least, if you have an idea for a speaker please pass it along to her. Have a great month and stay warm! Carl
4 How Do We Organize And Preserve The Rich History Of The Squalicum Yacht Club? Please Offer To Help Ten years ago along with two other members we dug into the history of the Squalicum Yacht Club. This was prompted by Commodore Steve Glenn who asked me for a short write-up on the Club s history. The trouble was that no living member knew where the building came from. There were several hypotheses but they turned out incorrect. The digging did reveal clues which lead to an answer to that question but along the way more questions were revealed and so the project started. Now we have a considerable amount of data in the form of hundreds of digital documents and photographs as well as boxes of books, documents, photographs, records, trophies and memorabilia, even an 8 mm movie. For example here is the announcement for the meeting at which our Club was officially organized and a Herald photo of storm damage to the marina managed for 10 years by the Club in Fairhaven. Who knew? So! How do we best preserve all this data? There is really too much to just store in any practical way. How do we do it safely and how safe does it have to be. What should be preserved and how etc. etc. It is not that we don t have ideas, rather to find a balance involving cost, effort, space, safety, importance and more. I would very much appreciate having some assistance from members who would be interested in helping go through what I (we) have in order to recommend to the Club a plan of organization and preservation of our history. I have informally and formally looked after and collected this material for many years. At some point the baton will have to be passed to someone else. It would be really good to have the material organized for a smooth transition and future maintenance. Please let me know if you would like to help with this important project. We ll do it on a convenience basis and it should be fun. Sincerely, Paul Graf, Chair of the History Committee. (SYC s most senior relic artifact?? but I didn t say old! )

She is also looking for people for the Change of Watch dinner committee. Programs: Pass around a list of upcoming programs; February will be a presentation from the Border Patrol. New business: Rosters: Each SYC family will get two rosters this year. One change: West Marine is no longer able to honor the 10% discount, but they may be able to open a port supply account for SYC, which would mean SYC members can buy at whatever discount professionals in the marine businesses buy for. LFS will still offer discounts; discounts are determined product by product. 80th anniversary: Time to start thinking about how to honor our 80th anniversary. Discussion revolved around updating the 75th anniversary CD that Paul prepared. Carl and Lorretta offered to be on the History Committee with Paul and other volunteers are welcome. Squalicum Yacht Club 7 2017 Potential Facilities Projects Contact Al Hunter (alansandyhunter@gmail.com) or any Bridge Member to recommend other projects that should be considered in the near or long (2-5 years) term. Preparing a long term plan will help in planning funding as well as schedules that might affect our rental clients. North Door Exterior Floor Protection Layup fiberglass directly over the exterior floor, down the face & up the walls a couple inches to effectively act like a shower pan diverting all water away from exposed wood structure which is vulnerable now. Probable cost: Under $200. Face-lift Women s Room & Sign Both Restroom as Unisex Women s Room needs a general face-lift and the current Men s Room is the only restroom that is ADA accessible. Probable cost: $200 Paint/Upgrade Galley Shelves Could be a basic refinishing project or be part 1 of a longer term project to improve the galley in both function and appearance. More extensive revisions to the galley counters and cabinets have been previously discussed but not acted upon. Potential cost: $100 to $4,000 Complete Concealment of Chair Racks This part of the chair rack project has never been completed. Two inexpensive ideas have been proposed; (1) A rod and curtain or (2) panels attached to the chair racks. Probable cost: Under $200 Install Outside Storage Shed A lockable storage shed for the BBQ, chairs and other items would protect our equipment from weather and damage or loss. Probable cost: $1,000 to $2,000 Refinish the Wood Floor Refinishing of the wood floor was discussed in 2015 and supported but was pushed off to do the siding replacement. Previous price quotations range from $2,650 to $5,000. Replace Folding Tables This has been discussed several times with general agreement that it should be done but reluctant to spend the money. We need (9) 8 and (possibly 4) 6 tables. Probable cost: $1,400 to $1,800 less cost recovery if we sell the old tables.

10 CONFIDENCE IN BOATING A BOATING WORKSHOP TAUGHT BY WOMEN WOMEN ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND WHO: Presented by women of Flotilla 11 from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary FOR: Women interested in building their confidence in boating WHEN: Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 10:00 to 5:00 WHERE: Bellingham Yacht Club Ward Room/Lower Level 2623 South Harbor Loop Road, Bellingham, WA COST: General public: $50; USCG Auxiliary members are free To REGISTER or any questions please: Email or call Kathryn Wellington kathrynwcgaux@gmail.com 360-220-3872 (US) or 778-828-8483 (Canada) This course is recommended for women who are interested in boating; who may be married to a boater, yet feel they are just there to provide the lunch; women who go out as passengers on other people's boats; or who may be anxious about boating altogether and would rather leave boating up to the men! Confidence in Boating is instructed by women from Flotillas of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary who have enthusiasm and experience with boating and want to help others who "ride" on boats to know what to do if the boat captain should fall overboard or become incapacitated and they will need to be "suddenly in command"! Through discussion and hands on training, we encourage women to voice their concerns and help them build confidence by learning some basics of boating such as using the radio to call for help, stopping the boat, turning the vessel around, and bringing someone back into the boat if there is a "man overboard"! We also share information on boating concerns such as dealing with fear and improving communication with your boating partner. We provide all necessary learning material, coffee, lunch, and snacks. Please join us! Register early! All past classes have been full.
