Pink from page 1 Every year for 5 years National Honor Society has been fundraising for the Jackson County Relay for Life team and the ACS. Club Sponsor April Bryson said that the reason they chose the ACS after researching several organizations because they used the donations more wisely. Years ago, pink out started because two of SMHS s teachers died of breast cancer. Chemistry teacher Valerie Yurkovich and English teacher, Pam Lee, were both diagnosed with breast cancer while working at SMHS. During the first pink out campaign, former math teacher Rochelle Mau and substitute teacher Darlene Beckett were diagnosed as well making the event even more personal for their senior sons. This year s event was personal as well for many students who were remembering family and friends who are survivors. Soccer Team Strong Despite Struggles By Matty Ornelas Our Smoky Mountain Varsity soccer boys have struggled throughout the season but one thing that keeps them going is each other. Some of the boys have played with each other since their freshman year and have learned to play with each other as well as accommodate when a player is out. This year freshman s Jesus Rosario and Lazaro Cedillo joined the varsity team. The other players showed them the ropes and took them in as one of their own. I appreciate the seniors because they helped me come out of my shell and be one of the guys, Cedillo Senior team captain Chris Henson, a true star player, has scored 25 goals and has three assists just this season. Henson enjoys playing the game because it gives him a place to take out all of his stress. Senior goal keeper Graham Maney has 51 saves and five shut outs. Maney has been playing on varsity for two years now.
