Growing our community globally at EuroGames Helsinki 2016 Members of PGVC with teams from: Brazil, Thailand, DEDICATED ATHLETES COMMUNITY LEADERS COACHES & MENTORS BARRIER BREAKERS & RECORD HOLD- ERS TEAM PLAYERS AWARD WINNERS & MEDALISTS RESPECTFUL DIVERSE WHO WE ARE NATIONALLY CERTIFIED REFEREES Portland Pound Puppies @ Fall Ball 2016 BACKGROUND Technology at work for you Portland Gay Volleyball (PGV) started as a recreational and social group in 1991 whose primary purpose was to promote the sport of volleyball and provide a safe zone for the GLBT athlete and allies. That same year, we became members of North American Gay Volleyball Association (NAGVA) and began hosting the annual Portland Fall Ball Tournament, drawing in teams from across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. In 2014, the group became Portland Gay Volleyball Club (PGVC), a nonprofit public benefit corporation and obtained tax exemption status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our main goal of promoting the sport and providing a non-exclusionary environment still remains. We have since added to our mission: embrace cultural diversity, develop and train players at the highest competitive level, and to grow the community locally, across the nation and have broadened the scope to include athletes from all over the world. FACILITATING CHANGE AROUND THE WORLD Some members join purely for the social and recreational aspect of PGVC, others train and play at the highest level of competition. These competitive members have traveled to USA Volleyball Nationals and finished in the top 15 or higher in their respective divisions. PGVC is also a member of the European Gay & Lesbian Sports Federation (EGLSF) and represented Portland as Team USA in the EuroGames Helsinki 2016, winning a Silver Medal. We were members of the Gay & Lesbian Sports Federation (FSGL) and represented Portland in Tournoi International de Paris in 2012 (Silver) and 2013 (Gold & Silver). This annual event offers 35 sports, draws over 2,300 athletes from around the world. Our biggest and probably the proudest moment in club history was being awarded the TIP Sportsmanship Award as well as a Silver medal in 2012. We were unanimously chosen by the tournament directors, event organizers, and every team competing against us; becoming the first American team to earn that honor since the start of the event in 2004. Whether we travel domestically or abroad, our members know they represent PGVC and the United States and always respect the other teams efforts and are gracious in victory and defeat.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS NAGVA CHAMPIONSHIPS: we have attended every year since 1991 GAY GAMES: 1986, 1990, 1994*, 1998, 2002*, 2006, 2010*, 2013* WORLD OUTGAMES: 2006, 2009*, 2013* TIP (Paris, France): 2012*, 2013* EuroGames: 2016* Helsinki, Finland *Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medal Awards, Top 15% in division or Individual Performance Award The list above is only a portion of PGVC teams and member accomplishments. However, winning is a bonus compared to the real lifechanging experiences and personal growth a member goes through when traveling abroad; respect for different cultures beliefs that is genuinely cultivated, appreciation of material possessions they ve taken for granted, learning different languages, and the new life-long relationships built around the world are just a few examples. When we travel domestically and abroad, it s awesome to witness the transformation of members who never dreamed of traveling so far to play volleyball. Learning how to accept and embrace change, and in the end, discovering the world is not as scary as it seems and that we are not alone. Through your support, it s a winning gift we can give our members for years to come. PGVC members at the Opening Ceremonies EuroGames Helsinki 2016 Silver Medalists HELP CREATE AWARENESS AND GOODWILL As with any business, there are many expenses connected with running the club, our tournaments, and social events. Sponsorship money will allow us to target following issues: Venue hire. The largest expense to run a tournament is the Growing the sport and our community locally and globally rental cost of playing facility. Venue cost in the mainland U.S. averages between $8,000-$11,000 for a two day tournament. In Hawaii it averages between $18,000-$40,000. Securing sponsorship to help defray this cost allows us to offer lower-cost registration fees to the 300+ athletes attending. Operational costs. We do our best to run an efficient and environment friendly tournament. However, scoresheets, team lineups, pens, pencils, etc. as well as larger than life tournament brackets are expensive and required. Promoting sport and diversity. Promoting sport in a community, where participation numbers should be higher than they are is an important role for the club. We want to encourage players to be active and socialize on and off the court. Hosting our registration, seeding, and awards banquet events lets us communicate our appreciation to the athletes for their participation and increases their overall experience. Growing our community. As a non-profit, all our tournaments are volunteer led. We also know that seeking support from sponsors will allow us to throw a successful tournament which is costeffective for participants and remain financially sound. All proceeds will either fund the tournament entirely and facilitate awards, giveaways to the players, or seed future tournaments.
