RINGER ROUND-UP APRIL 2015 EDITI0N 1-2015 B.C. HORSESHOE ASSOCIATION PUBLICATION WALTER KINAKIN JULY 17, 1936 JANUARY 05, 2015 EDITOR: Telephone: : samtom@telus.net 7987 Graham Ave, Burnaby BC V3N 1V8 Website: www.bchorseshoe.com

Welcome to 2015, soon the horseshoe season will be upon us, well actually we already had one tournament so far this season, on February 8/15 Victoria ringers only which had 40 entries and from what we have head it was a huge success. Be sure to visit our website at: www.bchorseshoe.com for the complete 2015 schedule, check it often as changes are made from time to time. The season will start on April 19/15 in Cloverdale. LOOK BACK AT 2014 A great season on horseshoe pitching is now in the books. We had a lot of good tourneys that were well attended, the summer fires in the interior did hurt attendance in July and August. Cloverdale sure did a bang up job on hosting the BC Champs, our hats off to the club and members, the tourney was well attended. Congrats to our provincial Champions: LADIES - ELYSE BRUNELLE CENTRAL PARK MENS TOM MOFFAT VICTORIA JUNIOR GIRLS LINDSAY HODGINS - VICTORIA JUNIOR BOYS DALTON MOFFAT VICTORIA ELDERS JERRY MELISSA VICTORIA PEEWEE ANTHONY RONDOW VICTORIA Congrats to our provincial class winners: JUNIOR GIRLS B PETRA MANKA CLOVERDALE MENS B DALE BAUER CLOVERDALE MENS C ROBIN DEGRAAF CLOVERDALE MENS D SCOTT O NEIL CENTRAL PARK LADIES B- JENA JOHN KAMLOOPS LADIES C LORRAINE HUBICK POWELL RIVER LADIES D MARGARET ONYSCHTSCHUK DRY CREEK (PORT ALBERNI) LADIES E VELMA DERKSEN - CLOVERDALE LADIES F SANDRA HANSON POWELL RIVER ELDERS B - RON FLEET VICTORIA ELDERS C JOHN COLLIN ABBOTSFORD ELDERS D WES WALKER CLOVERDALE ELDERS E HARRY BEY POWELL RIVER ELDERS F - GARY BECK CLOVERDALE The 2015 BC Championships will be in Victoria 5-6. We look forward to seeing you; we know the Victoria Club will be a great job, as usual, being our hosts. Regretfully so far in 2015 we have lost a great deal of pitchers. On the front cover is Walter Kinakin a member of the BC Horseshoe Association Hall of Fame.

Walter had to be one of the toughest competitors I have seen on the courts, never game up. I have to remember that this man loved horseshoes. One year his daughter had planed her wedding, well she had it for the Labor Day weekend, well, Walter had her change the date as this was the weekend for the BC Championships. Since I started writing this newsletter we received the following from Winfield (John Hamler): I attended the Funeral for Cliff Bailey on Saturday Feb 14. He passed on Feb 9. He was a long time member in Winfield. His children did a great job for the service. We lost Verna Weingardt on Feb 1 another long time member. There was no service. Rocky Kwamsoos passed on Feb 3. He was a big part of our club for years. Andy Raab one of our crib members passed on Jan 27 after being struck by a vehicle. Doris Wilton has had her heart valve surgery today and it all went well. Here's to a speedy recovery Doris!!!!!!! Bill Heber is slowly recovering from his by-pass surgery but is doing well. We have a couple of other members who are not doing well right now. A tuff month in Winfield and Horseshoes NEWS FROM VICTORIA June Thompson passed away on February 18, 2015 June was a first class person on and off the courts, someone you had to love the moment you meet. June was a excellent horseshoe player, up the high 50% range. She gave all the ladies a run for their money at tournaments. June and I had an agreement at tournaments, if I showed up not shaved, she slapped me, if I showed up shaved she would kiss me on the cheeks. Sure am going to miss that. We love you June. To her husband Mike and family, our condolences. There will be a Celebration of Life for June Thompson at the Victoria Horseshoe Club on February 28 from 2-4 pm. MORE SAD NEWS For those of you who remember, Garry Rayner passed away on February 15, 2015 Garry was a good horseshoe player. He is now reunited with his wife Annie (Former Secretary of the BCHA), brother Murray. We will miss you Garry. If we have, missed anyone, our apologies. Let s hope the rest of 2015 brings us nothing but good and positive news. See everyone on the courts in 2015.

Mailing Address Elyse Brunelle 3754 Imperial St Burnaby V5H 1A1 Thank You John Hamler Secretary BCHA 2015 BCHA RAFFLE JOHN HAMER

Please note the following from John Hamler, we have some new rules we have to follow we ask for your co-operation. I will be distributing the tickets for the BCHA cash Raffle at the first executive meeting in Abbotsford on April 25. This year we printed 1000 tickets. Last year we only sold 750 and 750 were wasted. The books of 5 tickets will sell for $20 and are WHITE in colour (900 Tickets Printed). The single tickets will sell for $5 each and are YELLOW in colour (100 Tickets Printed). The different colours are a requirement of our BC Lotteries License. The books MUST come back to me intact with the covers on, not modified in any way so I can do a proper reconciliation prior to and after the draws. With the covers I can keep track of things with 200 of them instead of 1000 tickets. The BHCA must keep all sold & unsold tickets on file for 2 years after the final draw date. We also have to prepare a written report by price range & ticket numbers of all sold & unsold tickets and keep that on file for 5 years. The early Bird Draw will be held in Winfield on June 27 and the final 4 draws will be in Victoria on Sept 6. All funds collected and sold tickets will come to me. Please ensure I get them in time for the early bird draw in Winfield. For the final draws I will also need to get everything back (sold & unsold tickets, money collected) in time and I will be in Victoria so I can get it from you there if you like. All Cheques are to be made out to "B.C. Horseshoe Association". Please do not mail cash. If you get cash keep it and mail me a cheque. If you see me in person, I can take cash for which I will issue a receipt. My Mailing Address John Hamler PO Box 2331 Kelowna, B.C. V1X 6A5 I live an hour from the post office and the last day I will be able to check my mail is one day before the early bird draw on June 27. Please mail your stuff back to me early enough so it get's included in the draw. I would suggest that the latest it should get mailed is June 19. If you see me at a tournament before then I will be more than happy to take things off your hands. As long as I am not pitching at the time, eating, or having a nap!!!! Thx John Hamler Secretary BC Horseshoe Association
