2017 B.C. INTERNATIONAL/HIGHWAYMAN OPEN MAY 20-21, 2017 MOFFAT RECAPTURES MENS TITLE, HODGINS RETAINS LADIES TITLE, MELISSA ADDS TO HIS RESUME, RONDOW NEW PEE WEE CHAMPION, HODGINS SETS RECORD FOR HIGHEST AVERAGE IN THE LADIES CLASS The 2017 tournament is now in the books. This was the 46th annual BC International (first played in 1971) and the 28th annual Highwayman Open. We had 56 entries, up 3 from 2016, we had 6 players from Washington State (1 more than in 2016), and with a little more work we can expect to have more players from Washington State to attend. Representing the Highwayman Dawn Representing the City of Abbotsford Counselor Dave Loewen LADIES A/B the only top A player that attended the tournament was Lindsay Hodgins, so we decided to combine the A/B together, paid out the prize money and declared a champion in each class. Lindsay set a new ladies record for the highest % in this tournament with a 72.46%. The previous record was in 1989 by Myrna Kissick from Alberta with 71.1%

I have been away in France where I attended the Centennial Celebrations at Vimy Ridge, so I am just now getting to my mail. What a pleasant surprise it was to open your letter. On second thought I shouldn't say surprise; because this is not the first time I have had the pleasure of opening such a letter from Vernon. Your Club's generosity and recognition of our junior members is Second To None and your members should be extremely proud of themselves!! I know I am speaking for the entire BCHA Executive when I say, Well Done Vernon!! It is a pleasure to have such a considerate and unselfish group of individuals as part of our organization. Best personal regards. Brian Ryder - Secretary-Treasurer BCHA

NEWS FROM CENTRAL PARK HORSESHOE CLUB SAM TOMASEVIC At an executive meeting earlier this year, Jim and Budd Ball announced they will be stepping down as President and Secretary at the end of they year. Bob and Darlene Salisbury stepped forwarded and announced they would like to take over the positions of President and Secretary, in fact, they said they can take over right away. A general meeting was held at the club on April 22, 2017 where this was ratified, welcome aboard Bob and Darlene. On May 7 th we held our first tournament of the year, Central Park Spring open with 30 entries (9 from Victoria), the weather was sunny but a little cool, but, no rain. Lunch was great Lasagna with meat sauce, Caesar salad assorted pies. Lil Collins knows how to look after us, if you left hungry that was your own fault. At our second tournament of the year, June 4/17, we had a small turn out of 16 players, this was one of those weekends when many had family things to do, and some went away for the weekend. For lunch we had Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Chicken Burgers garnished with chips and a pickle. The 16 players did have a great time, we had our usual 50/50 draw, and we also had raffle prizes. The 50/50 winner was Scott O Neil $ Our raffle raised $76.00, which was great, winners where: 1- IHop Sonja Tomani 2- IHop Lil Collins 3- Fountain Tire Sonja Tomani 4- McDonald's Sam Tomasevic 5- Basket Wendy Tomasevic 6- Boston Pizza Lil Collins

PENTICTON HORSESHOE CLUB JUANITA LAYE The Penticton tournament held on June 13 th went off without a hitch, except our computer and printer went down after we printed off all the classes whew. Penticton had 27 entries. It was a beautiful day for pitching but we had some cloud then thank goodness the rain held off till we were all finished in the afternoon. We had one new player from Vernon. Penticton has signed up two new members. Our next tournament will be July 15, Register with Juniata juanita_laye@hotmail.com or call ABBOTSFORD HORSESHOE CLUB DANNY COFFIN PRESIDENT Our first tournament was successful and we had 28 entries that had a good start to a new season. Our next event was the B.C. International/Highwayman and it was well attended by 56 pitchers with over 20 of them from the Island and the interior. It was good to see some pitchers from Washington State and we should try to support their tournaments since it is not that far away. They talked a bit about the Grandparents fund and awarded 2 $50.00US prizes from the fund. Some of the winners of the dollar a loss donated their winnings to the fund and others gave money to the B.C. Horseshoe junior fund. This was 28th year that the Highwayman Pub has made a substantial donation to the tournament and although there was more people came than they were expecting they did a great job and it was a fun evening. Diane Davies the owner of the Pub donated several platters of appetizers to show us she enjoys our event and wants to continue so please support her any time you are in the area. We had our third tournament of the year the Abbotsford Open June 18th it was nice that you and Wendy came out for a visit. Because it was Fathers Day and not great weather it was the smallest tournament that we have ever held. We decided to do like the other Clubs are doing and play everyone in the morning which makes for better classes. One problem I noticed was that everyone was playing so there were no score keepers so everyone kept their own and there are a few pitchers that do not know how to keep score so that is our fault for not helping them.

After we set up all of out tents the weather broke and was not too bad. The ladies in the kitchen did their usually great breakfast and lunch. Archie our tournament director is doing a great job learning the HS Master Program and is teaching Denis and Don so hopefully he has help. Our next tournament is not until September 10th so we hope to go to the tournaments at the other clubs and support them. If we hope to keep this sport alive we have to support each other as much as we can. KAMLOOPS HORSESHOE CLUB JIM MICHIE Hello everyone, the 27 of May was Kamloops tournament. It was a great day for a change up to 31 degrees. Last year for both our tournaments we needed heaters. We had 24 contestants from Penticton, Summerland, Winfield, Vernon, Salmon Arm and here in Kamloops. The ladies had a continental breakfast and a good lunch. We would like to put out thanks to those who helped put this together. With special thanks from the folks from other clubs who helped us with putting the teams together and the big job of getting the final scores. We couldn't of done it with out you John, Cindy, Amy and Marcie. All in All it was a good tournament, the pits and lawns are in good shape.

The BC Games are in Vernon this year September 12-16th. I am the zone rep for zone 8 and Juanita Laye for zone 5. We have good interest and hope everyone that is participating will be signed up by the Vernon tournament Saturday June the 10th. We now are looking forward to hosting the Provincials next year (2018) in Kamloops. We are very thankful for this opportunity. We have good support from the city as well as the neighboring Clubs who will assist us where needed. The, to do list is long so the club is in gear. If any pitchers are holidaying through Kamloops this year we have some RV parking for the night a good place to rest by the river and the pits are open to throw a few shoes. We are hoping for a good turn out next year. If you have any questions please give me a call. Jim Michie, (250) FROM THE GREATER VICTORIA HORSESHOE PITCHING ASSN. Affectionately known as the Victoria Horseshoe Club Louise Hamel Since our last reporting, many of the club members have been busy with minor renovations to the clubhouse (sound system, ceiling fan and other upgrades), the hosting of a St. Patrick s dinner and games night, along with darts and cribbage nights both winding down making way for Summer League start up. A special Easter Monday Cribbage afternoon was hosted by the President as well. Recycling News: It is our duty as a society to recycle. It s the future! Having said that, our Recycling Program has now been reorganized and is up and running with a focus on recycling our paper, plastic and metals. Many thanks for the long man hours to our out-going Bob Curtis and our in-coming Ron Fleet who have been our masters of recycling. Hip Hip Hooray! You will now find blue boxes both inside and outside the clubhouse and will be asking for everyone s support. We are also pleased to announce the installation of two Mason Bee Houses complete with staffing. They are a welcomed addition to our club grounds and will be busy pollinating our surrounding fruit trees and community gardens behind the courts. It will be great to educate our youth and existing members on the benefits mason bees provide. We now have GVHPA General Information Brochures and GVHPA Members Information Guides along with a Youth and School Information Guide. These have been a great advertising and information tool for all concerned.

Our Book Exchange Corner of the club has taken on a new face. More shelving to accommodate and organize our supply of books / puzzles etc. along with our sound system thanks to many of our membership volunteers! Big thanks go out to everyone who has stepped forward during our minor renos and work parties over the past month to get everything done making way for Summer League start-up. We have 16 Sponsored Teams for our Summer League which will be played over the next 18 weeks. New incentives have been added to the mix for Player of the Week etc. Our summer league teams have been a going concern and half way through our pitching season. Loads of fun happening with Tuesdays being especially busy with our youth contingent growing thanks to our School Program. We have had 491 students through the club during School hours since late April under the supervision of Bruce Bodnaruk and his member volunteers. Bravo. We have managed to increase our Youth Program via the schools. What a win-win that s been. The Memorial Doubles Tournament is fast approaching on June 10 th and 11 th. Wednesday, June 14 th there will be an Open House get-together with George and Melanie Taylor s Dance Group, Le-La-La Dancers and their guests from New Zealand, an 18 member dance group as a prelude to the Aboriginal Festival in the downtown core. What a beautiful gesture. Hot Dogs and Hamburgers and many of our Club members, neighbors and associates will be destined for a fun filled evening of dance, fun, culture and food. Festivities will start at 5:30 and will go to approximately 8:30 pm. Should be a fun filled league season! NEWS FROM SALMON ARM FAITH JUELL On May 6th we held our first tournament with 41 registered. Several new members from the Interior played, and the weather cooperated. We have 1 new member, Ray Timoffee. Our members travel to other tournaments in Kamloops, Winfield, Penticton, and Vernon. During May we hosted students from the Sr. High School outdoor class, to learn the very old sport of Horseshoe pitching from the "Senior Pitchers" In the meantime, we continue practicing twice a week, rain, wind, or sunshine. NEW ADDRESS BRIAN RYDER Our Treasurer, Brian Ryder and his wife Ruth have moved to Penticton, their new address is: BRIAN RYDER 1103 BARTLETT DRIVE PENTICTON BC V2A 8Y4

Entry fee is US$20.00 entry deadline is Thursday eve, the 17 th at 9 pm. Coffee and donuts available in the morning. Great hamburgers and all the trimmings plus desert at lunch. Contact is Phyllis Quist: or phylquist@openaccess.org. Info, on, lodging available by request. We hope you will join us. Cell phone contact day of tournament is NEWS FROM CLOVERDALE JIM GRANT PRESIDENT AND TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR Hello to all we hope this finds you in fine shape and pitching some of your best shoes. The Cloverdale Memorial Open May 28th was lucky to have some fine weather for pitching shoes. The 22 who pitched enjoyed the competition and fun with friends. We welcomed back 3 Cloverdale members to tournament play, these were Jackie Kirk, Diane Grant and from 2010 Scott Halls. Results can be found on the BCHA web site. The 2017, 89TH BC Championship Sept 2nd and 3rd, is being hosted by Cloverdale, this being the 8th time Cloverdale has hosted the BC Championships. Our members are working hard to make the BC Championship another successful fun time for all. Remember to reserve your dinner dance tickets early so you do not miss out. Call Cheryl at For RVers remember there is another event at the exhibition grounds that weekend so reserve early for full hook ups. Call For Tenting (limited space) & Dry RV parking (12 spots so reserve early) Call Jim Holiday Inn & Suites Reserve before July 2nd. Cloverdale Horseshoe Club Tournament Format Change The Cloverdale Horseshoe Club has always tried to make changes to keep horseshoes competitive and fun for all. With the big decline in tournament registration the Cloverdale Horseshoe Club is adopting a new format for tournaments with less than 36 entries. The tournament will start at 10 am with check in by 9:30am. The Entry Fee will stay at $15

All registered pitchers will pitch 4 games in the morning and after lunch will complete any games still to be played. This will shorten the length of the tournament day. We feel that most pitchers would prefer not to sit around half the day before playing or waiting for the tournament results as well as wanting to get home before dinner. This is a plus for those Island pitchers who wish to compete on the mainland once in a while and get home earlier. Scorekeepers can and will be a problem from time to time and some classes may have to keep their own score. We feel this is a minor issue and like everything it will work out in the end. Another change that we tried at our Memorial tournament and it seemed to work so we will continue to move away from points and use shoe limits to equal class playing times. Thank you to the Joseph Richard Group Public Houses (Townhall Public House, Micky s Public House, Edith + Arthur Public House, The Hemingway Public House, The Henry Public House) two $100 certificates for 4 people. FROM WINFIELD CINDY HELGESON TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR Winfield Doug Wilton Memorial Tournament June 3, We had the perfect temperature with a high going to 20c. Winfield District (now called Lake Country) still allows us to have campers in the parking lot for our Tournament. We had five RV s and one couple pitched a tent. The RV s were asked not to park by the creek this year because a few trees had already fallen into the parking lot in May. The roots of the trees became saturated with lots of water from all the rain. The only issue we had with flood in May was the men s bathroom and into our back door water and mud built up from too much rain. We started out with 41 entries to Saturday June 3 rd, 2017 Winfield tournament. We had pitchers from Alberta, Abbotsford, Golden, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Winfield, Summerland, and Penticton. WOW!! What a turn out thanks to everyone that came. We also had a couple come from Abbotsford (The Coffin s) to camp and just keep score for us. Winfield volunteers were great; thank-you everyone!!! The Doug Wilton Memorial Tournament has a Trophy for the highest percentage player of the day. The name that goes on the Trophy for 2017 is Yvonne Greaves. CONGRATULATIONS YVONNE GREAVES she pitched 9.68 over her average. We had two players get sick and had to leave the tournament. Gary Strom was sick in the tummy. Pat Rookes husband drove her to hospital to get checked out; the hospital did a few tests (they will find out results after a few days) she was feeling better on Sunday. SYLVIANNE MORGAN MEMORIAL OPEN SUNDAY JUNE 4, We had 14 entries for this tournament the weather was perfect high of 20c. We were able to play all players in the morning; I rounded up scorekeepers the night before to make sure we could play everyone in the morning. That is one thing Winfield is famous for is all our extra scorekeepers. Cheer them on!!!!! Our President sent in some nice photos of each day with the winners of each group. We will let you know the 2018 dates of our tournament soon. I look forward to seeing everyone again next season in wonderful Winfield. Happy horseshoes!!!

BCHA EARLY BIRD DRAW The winner of the $100 Early Bird Draw was Chantal Wilson from Sooke, the ticket was drawn on June 11, 2017 at the Victoria Memorial Doubles tournament. The draw was conducted in accordance with BC Gaming Policy & Enforcement Branch guidelines. The drawn ticket will go back into the draw for the final draws at the BC Championships in Cloverdale on Sept after the completion of pitching. CACTUS CLUB CAFÉ DONATION - $50.00 GIFT CARD QUESNEL HORSESHOE CLUB HELENE BOUDREAU We had our first tournament on May this year. The weather was great, not too hot or rainy. We were not many but those attending enjoyed the two days. Great meals as usual prepared by Wanda and Thelma. Our cooks double as score keepers. Joyce and Jeanette assist with keeping score when needed which is most of the time. Jeanette is our tournament organizer and Joyce is our Treasurer. Some of the Prince George pitchers were down for some fun with us. Not much changes here, same players as last year and not much prospect for new members. Even the advertising we do is for naught.

SUMMERLAND HORSESHOE CLUB JUANITA LAYE Summerland club is doing well. We just had a grade 3 class come and learn about horseshoes. We made a game of it for the kids by getting them playing a game and some of them are a natural getting ringers and points. Last week we had another grade 3 class from same school and one of the fathers came and is interested in joining our club. I don't know who had more fun, the kids or the teachers. Every time one of the kids got a ringer, the teacher would take a picture of them in the pit with there ringer. The kids were all so excited. Afterward we answered questions about how we play and the kids were very excited telling the teacher how much fun they had and what they learned. Afterward we gave the kids each a juice box and cookies. We have another class coming later this month. COMOX HORSESHOE CLUB LYLE TROCKSTAD PRESIDENT Greetings from the Comox Valley Horseshoe Club. Our club has pitches in both Courtenay and Cumberland. Regular league play goes from April until the end of July however, this year we plan to continue with a weekly fall session. This year our newly elected executive voted to rejoin the BC Horseshoe Association. Our members meet every Thursday evening for league play with four teams at each location. At the start of our season we had 22 players and to date we now have 28 members. This is due to an active recruiting program by our enthusiastic membership. On May 27 th five members travelled to Powell River to play in their tournament. Members from the Powell River team provided transportation to and from the ferry. This was the first sanctioned

tournament that we attended since re-joining the Association and we all had a great time with good games and friendly competition. Our club is basically in a startup position with many unknowns and much to learn. We look for advice and guidance from other clubs and welcome your input. Our executive and members have a great attitude towards making this club a success within the BCHA guidelines. A special thank you to Tom Mofatt who made a special trip to Courtenay to introduce and welcome our club to the BCHA. Gratitude is also extended to Jim Hoffman and Lorraine Hubick who walked us through the tournament registration process. VERNON HORSESHOE CLUB DON MYRFIELD PRESIDENT Vernon had its 37th Annual Tournament on June 10th and 11th. We are making our tournaments mixed for both days as the numbers are not there to separate the women from the men and elders. We had a registration of 44 players for the Saturday and 30 players for Sunday. We had requested sunshine for both days, but had to endure the mixed bag for Saturday. The out of town players were down this year due to other obligations and holidays. Robin and Cheryl DeGraff came from Cloverdale and Kurt Breuer travelled from Prince George. The competition was great, the food, (chicken and salads and lots of desert choices) were delicious, and the prize table was overflowing. The scoring was done with the Horseshoe Master Software and the learning curve is getting easier. Thanks to, Jim Grant putting clear and concise directions down on paper to follow.

A good time was had by all. We look forward to the +55 BC Games in September and hope to see a lot of "Horseshoe Huckers" from around BC and renew some friendships and enjoy our sport together B.C. CHAMPIONSHIPS CLOVERDALE HORSESHOE CLUB SEPTEMBER 2-3, 2017 Please remember the entry deadline of August 23, 2017 entry form included in this edition. Entry fee adults $25.00 per person, junior, pee wees free. Please note the address change to submit your entry form and money, Brian Ryder has now moved to Penticton, the new address is on the entry form. We look forward to seeing you at Cloverdale. PRESIDENTS REPORT TOM MOFFAT As I write this the season is in full swing, with many completed tournaments and leagues underway. A great time was had with some of our friends from Washington State that came up for the BC International. They said they really enjoyed it. And we need to find ways to go down south and play in their tournaments. If everyone can try and even make one of theirs in the next 2-3 years that would make a huge difference with them returning. At home please support your local tournaments and at the end of the season the Regional championships. It keeps the horseshoe community strong. Support each other. Please get your entries in for the BC Championships being held in Cloverdale this year, they have been working hard for a successful tournament. Lots of extras, dinner and dance, and a great deal on accommodations. So hope to see as many of you at the Cloverdale for this. The same topics come up every year and they are shrinking numbers and Scorekeepers not enough people doing it. Please do not give up on advertising, finding new ways to get people out to play. And remember invite someone out and put a shoe in their hand and before long they are hooked. Keep an eye out for younger adults as that is the area we need. But do not forget to address the other ages. Do not grow weary of doing well for the sport. Scorekeepers we seem to be short every tournament. Again find new ways to get scorekeepers. Maybe a draw only for scorekeepers. Getting high school students that need community work for credits or your next door neighbor s kid that is looking to make a few bucks. These are just

a few ideas; I m sure there are more but keep trying. never score keep, one day you will get thru. And again keep asking those ones that Last thing I would like to address is our conduct on and around the courts. Let s be courteous to everyone, and remember not everyone loves to hear your jokes. Ladies and children are always present and some things should not be said around some ears. Rude, obnoxious, or threatening behavior also is never tolerated. Clubs that have to deal with a person with bad conduct, after only a quick warning are asked to tell the person to leave and file a report with BC Horseshoe Association as soon as possible. It s no use sending us something 1 month later. We will give you 30 days to file a report about bad conduct. Only then can we act. Enjoy the rest of the season, and may you be blessed with an abundance of ringers. Michael Whitmey The BC Horseshoe Association would like to thank Fraser # Enterprise Way Surrey, B.C V3S-6J9 Valley Wireless for you kind donation of a $ gift Telephone: Fax: certificate for our raffle at the BC International/Highwayman Open. LADYSMITH HORSESHOE CLUB - VINCE HERKEL The Ladysmith Horseshoe Club got off to a slow start this year with the weather colder & wetter than normal, cement work on the pitches being done by the Town of Ladysmith was delayed, loss of members: one passed on, two not playing this year or three either sick with an illness or still recuperating from operations. We have good news and that is four new members: Cheryle Sosnowski, Obie Gaudet, Wayne Hodgins, & Rolen Loiselle, all 30' players. We held a work party June 21/17, repaired damaged pitches, repainted the foul lines, swept the walking/playing areas, getting ready for the July 1&2 tournaments. More clean up still needs to be done and it looks like summer arrived right on schedule, June 21/17 being the first official day. About a week ago I saw on the internet an APB (all points bulletin) that Summer is missing, last seen in August 2016, unsubstantiated sighting in May 2017, looks like we finally found Summer. We are hoping for a great turn out for our July 1&2, Bernice Busch & Murray Rayner Mixed & Open tournaments, and also for our Stew Battie Memorial Ladysmith Days, Aug. 5&6 Mixed & Open tournaments.

We will be running a smaller concession this year with maybe hot dogs, sandwiches, treats and of course refreshments. The Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring food truck concessions in the park this year: Tae-Rex, Thunder's Truck, and Ice-Cream & Donut Vendors. SOOKE HORSESHOE CLUB CHANTAL WILSON PRESIDENT The club has been busy with high school students coming for visits to try it out and maybe implicate into their curriculum next year. We are up to about 30 members including our jrs. and pee wees!! Still trying to get the word out to the public We just finished our first ever spring league play with Tom Bligh and Chris Vanier getting their names on the first ever SOOKE TROPHY!!! We have now started our summer league and very excited that some of Victoria friends are coming to join us. We have participated in the Victoria doubles tournament and are ready for Ladysmith and other upcoming tournaments including islands and BC Next on our list to do is fundraise so that we can improve our pitches and add more. Thank you to all our volunteers. Sooke Horseshoe Pitching Association is very excited about winning the BCHA $100 early bird draw!!!!! We would be happy to donate a Prime Rib dinner for minimum 6 to a maximum of 20 people valued at $ that includes Prime Rib, mashed potatoes, gravy and seasonal vegetables and can be used at any of our locations on Friday or Saturday. Locations in Abbotsford, Kelowna, Prince George and Richmond

POWELL RIVER LORRAINE HUBICK Gosh, the weather man hasn t been very nice for us up the Sunshine Coast for horseshoe Pitching. The odd time we have a break - perfect to have some fun, next day it rains. We were lucky to have our May tournament with no rain, Pitchers from the Island came to challenge us, amongst, the new club group from Comox, Victoria and Winfield followed by days of rain, winds and cold- coming over from Vancouver Island, from the snow caped mountains.. Brrr. The dedicated pitchers from our club still come out on Drop-in Sunday mornings, 3 hours. This is always a good time, each time we have a different partner to play with others on selected courts. A real battle, a higher % teams up with a lower %, gives every player a chance to look forward to, as the $2.00 entry fee, is paid back to the winners. Then there is our Thursday night League, 8 teams. Two hours of real competition. This varies week to week. We ll find out towards mid August who had the luck of the strongest team. This is hard as there are so many that are on holidays, or other commitments, on a league night. But all balances out in the end. Soon we will be concentrating on having the Island championship Aug here in Powell River. Here are some accommodations that can be reached: (Short driving to HS courts) Westview Centre Motel Powell River Town Centre Hotel The Old Courthouse Inn (This one is approx. 15 min drive) in Powell River are more one can look up under Powell River. There We wish excellent pitching in the upcoming Worlds tournament in St. George UTAH and the Canadian Championships in Guelph, Ontario. Fine groups from the Island are going to participate. June 22, 2017 League Night 8 teams on the go.
