1 March 2014 President s Perspective by Scott Pinar This past winter has been especially cold and long. I am sure we are all looking forward to our opening day. All of us on the Beechview Swim and Tennis Club Board of Directors, welcome you to another season of fun-in-the-sun!! We have collectively been working diligently to get things started for our upcoming season. Because we consider each of our members an important part of our swim club family, I am extending an invitation to everyone to voice opinions, concerns, ideas and or critiques to our leaders this season. We are excited to try incorporating all constructive ideas and criticisms which will benefit our club. Please write an with your ideas to the addresses on our website we re waiting to hear from you!! NEW THIS SEASON: I am happy to introduce our new Club Manager, Mike Walters along with our Assistant Manager, Jason Lintjer. Mike came to us with a lifetime of exposure to water and swimming. He also brings experience in restaurant management and corporate management. Mike adds the benefit of clear direction, positive attitude, a great personality and has stated I expect to improve our member's experience by maintaining a clean club with a well-trained, courteous staff and more concession options. Jason proves to be an asset, as well, with his background in swimming and mentoring employees with a strong work ethic. Pool & Grounds by Joe Lapinski & Gary Peters The Pool and Grounds team successfully closed up shop at the end of the season with the help of many volunteers. We will see you soon for Spring Clean-up!!!!! Please watch out for s to sign up for Spring Clean up on the following days April 26th & 27th and May 10th & 11th!!!!!

2 Social Committee by Darlien Pausch and Nancy Baker Hello once again fellow BVSC members. We have a new kid in town and she will be my awesome side kick for the year. Drum rolls please. May I introduce Nancy Baker. Yep she has only been a member for 6 months and she is already jumping in with both feet or can I say diving in. HEHE. She comes to us with some fresh ideas and real spunk in her step as well. She is real savvy on the computer. Someone on the social committee has to be and we all know it sure is not me. This year, we have a real nice line up of activities planned for your summer enjoyment. The first party of the summer will be a TGIF party on June 13th. This also happens to hopefully be our last day of school. This will be a great way to say goodbye to school and hello summer and reunions with our summer pool friends. Look for details on our website for more information. Just a heads up for all you busy families, here is our social calendar for the summer. Pen us in and come have some fun. To avoid a late fee, all payments should have been post marked by March 1, Anyone not receiving an invoice should contact Dave Thomas at treasurer@beechviewswimclub.com or phone Membership by Dannette Carroll-Mateyak Happy Spring BVSC Families, As I write this the forecast is calling for six more inches of snow tomorrow, but I am clinging to the knowledge that summer will eventually arrive! As we plan for our upcoming season, as always we continue to work toward a goal of 100% membership. To that end, I will be marketing our great club throughout the area, including schools, local churches, and maybe most importantly- through YOU, our loyal BVSC members. As a thank you for your continued support, we will once again be offering a $50 incentive for every new member you refer. I love seeing our members help our pool community grow, and watching new families discover how much we have to offer. 3 Tennis News by Chip Hill and Juli Schwalm Juli Schwalm and Chip Hill will both be back as the tennis board members as well as Chris Chirgwin back as the Head Coach. As in years past, the coaches will run the Junior Tennis Teams along with the challenge ladder and Gold Cup Tournament. They will also teach lessons for young children, teens and adults. Whether you are a beginner or a club level player, BVSC has something for you on the courts this summer. Come and help put up the nets and windscreens, as well as clean the tennis courts and surrounding area. Clean up dates this spring are scheduled for April 19, 26 & May 17. The $50 clean-up assessment will be refunded per family, so if you play, please come and help out. New for 2014 will be a monthly adult mixer held on May 18th, June 22 nd, July 27th and August 24th. Dates and times will be posted online and in the office. This will be a great opportunity to play competitive tennis in a fun format while also making it a social event for members to eat and drink and enjoy the Michigan summer. For the mixer in August, the club will provide the main food dish and a round robin tournament format will be played where a BVSC champion will be crowned and prizes awarded! We had a great turnout last year and it was a fun way to close out the summer. Registration: Tennis registration is planned for the April 22 nd at Beechview Elementary School at 6:00 pm. The Junior Team opening party will be Friday, June 13 th. The fees will be $105 for A & B teams, $80 for C team and C apprentice, and $10 per hour for lessons. The registration fee for A, B, C and C apprentice teams includes a lightweight BVSC team t-shirt, team practice Monday - Thursday starting the week of June 16 th and ending with an in-house tournament and party in August (tentatively August 8 th ). Everyone on A, B and C team participates in matches every Friday afternoon, competing against 3 other tennis clubs in the area. This is a perfect opportunity for your children to have fun playing tennis and have activities throughout the summer. Also if you wish to purchase a key to the courts, they will be available for $5. We will continue with the adult drills (organized practice) and adult lessons for beginners Tuesday evenings. Our highest priority is for the kids (and adults) to have fun and to continue to build the BVSC tennis program! Looking forward to having another great season at Beechview!! Juli & Chip

4 Swim Team News by Clevell Koon & Karen Butler Although it is cold and gray outside, NOW is time to start thinking about sun and fun and the Beechview Breakers Swim Team! The summer swim team is a great opportunity for swimmers of all levels to compete in a fun and supportive environment and to develop their skills. Swim team members will get instruction from highly qualified swim coaches five days a week and will compete in NSSL sanctioned swim meets, mini meets, and finals. Swimmers can also participate in fun team building events such as a pizza party, pancake breakfast, team overnight, wave pool outing, and end of the season banquet & dance. Looking forward this year to new booster positions, improved communication, new assistant coaches, and goal setting sheets. Last year, the Beechview Breakers had a great season. I want to thank Martha Leever, the outgoing swim co-chair, for all of her hard work for the swim team the past three years. For the upcoming 2014 swim season, I would like to welcome aboard Karen Butler as the new swim co-chair. I look forward to working with Karen this summer. Our 2014 swim team registration will take place Tuesday April 22nd at Beechview Elementary School from 6-8 pm. Online registration will begin on Tuesday, April 22 at 6 P.M We are continuing to use SwimTopia this year. You can sign up for booster positions, job volunteer spots and register your swimmers and pay, all online! Everyone is welcome to come and ask questions, get help registering or just see some friendly faces. Different Strokes will be there for the new team suit fittings and with a variety of swim products for purchase. As always, the club will be offering swim lessons to our members. This year we are teaming up with tennis to make an effort for members to participate in both tennis and swim team/lessons. Information about swim lessons will be in our next newsletter and signup for these lessons will be available through esoft after the club opens for the season. We look forward to seeing you all soon!
