SKI & SNOWBOARD CLUB MEETING FOR NEW MEMBERS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2017 HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM 7:00 P.M. Contact Information Welch Village 651-258-4567 Melissa Bernhard, Recreation Coordinator, 507-664-3502 or MBernhard@northfieldschools.org J. Rieber Paulson, Club Advisor, 507-645-8949 Sr. High Advisors Middle School Advisors Vicky Chlan 952-652-2310 Pat Fick 507-645-8331 Reiber Paulson 507-645-8949 Karen Jensen 507-663-1348 Jessica Minder 360-929-4439 Time and Dates We will be skiing and boarding on Mondays, starting December11. Buses will depart as soon as possible after school from the Northfield Middle School and Northfield High School. Students will ski and board until 8:15 p.m. and be returned by 9:15 p.m. Schools will not be accessible upon returning back to Northfield. Students will need to bring book bags on the bus with them. Busses will either have a driver present or will be locked when at Welch. If snow conditions permit, we will go to Welch Village on the following dates: December 11, 18 January 8, 15, 22, 29 February 5, 12 Make-up or bonus days: December 4, February 19 & 26 (weather permitting) Transportation Transportation will be arranged with Northfield Lines. We expect to accommodate all participants; however, preferences will be given to students who have signed up for the full season. In the past, we have had space for almost all part-time skiers and boarders. Students must use the transportation provided, both going to and coming from the ski area. Students will be released to their own parents and no one else for any alternative transportation. The parent must talk to the advisors directly for the student to be released. Note: Northfield Lines reminds parents that ski equipment cannot be carried on regular school buses. Storage is available at both the middle and high school. Equipment should be dropped off with the student in the morning (middle school storage room near cafeteria & high school upper balcony across from the wrestling room) Refunds If you register for the full eight weeks of transportation and the snow melts so skiing is canceled and no bonus days are available, you break a leg or arm while skiing or boarding, or an extended illness prevents you from skiing or boarding, your unused transportation money will then be refunded. If you miss an occasional day of skiing or boarding for any reason (including disciplinary reasons) transportation money will not be refunded. Adult Advisors One adult advisor will be provided for every 25 students.

Middle School Parents Please Note: Parents dropping off students and skis before school for Ski & Snowboard Club must park in the parking lot to unload skis. Do not park in the driveway or the drop off circle. Thanks from the Middle School Principal. Rental Equipment If you plan to rent at Welch, the rental fee is $20.00 each Monday. Rental equipment includes: skis, boots and poles or snowboard and boots. Helmet rental is an additional $5 each time one is rented. The rental fee is to be paid at Welch Village each time you rent, and a new rental from with info, parent signature and date must be presented at the time of each rental. If you plan to rent, you must obtain the 2017-2018 official rental forms by contacting Community Services at mbernhard@northfieldschools or by calling 507-664-3502. Forms are also located on the registration site and are attached to the bottom of this packet (if viewing on website). Welch will not honor any other rental form other than the ones dated by Welch and provided to you by Community Services. Rules and Regulations Ski & Snowboard Club is for the enjoyment and fellowship of skiing. Because Ski & Snowboard Club is a school activity, all school rules relating to smoking, drugs and alcohol are the same as being in a school building and on the school grounds. Skiers will be referred to the assistant principal if school rules are broken. While on the bus, please follow the directions of the advisors and driver. Do not litter, wear ski boots, sit on armrests, etc. Because it is often difficult to identify the cause of problems on the bus, your help will be appreciated in avoiding any bus problem or identifying the cause. Problems that cannot be resolved will lead to assigning specific seats to skiers & boarders. Any disrespect to advisors, bus drivers, or Welch personnel will not be tolerated and can result in suspension from Ski & Snowboard Club. If you have complaints, comments or suggestions, see Mr. Paulson. There is no refund of any kind if you are suspended or dropped from Ski & Snowboard Club for disciplinary reasons. Lift tickets must be worn on the jacket (use wire wicket) with both halves and numbers visible. Skiers with season passes should be ready to show the pass both on the bus and at the ski area. Lock up your equipment if you store it at school during the day on Ski & Snowboard Club Mondays. The middle school provides a locked space. The high school provides a space, but it is not locked. If anyone has equipment stolen at the ski area, report the theft to the ski area office and call the Goodhue County sheriff. Please let the advisors know about the theft too. We recommend using ski locks anytime your skis are left unattended at Welch. We recommend using the bag check for your gear while you are out skiing. You may ski as late as 8:15 p.m. Be on the bus and ready to leave at 8:25 p.m. Those who are late will not ski the following Monday. Injuries As in all sports, accidents do happen. We want you to be aware of what happens in the event of a skiing or boarding injury. In recent years most of the injuries have been snowboarders (often with limited experience). The injuries from snowboard accidents are usually upper body injuries, i.e., wrists, shoulders and head. We strongly recommend helmets and wrist guards for all snowboarders. More and more skiers are wearing helmets too.

An injured skier or boarder is reported as quickly as possible to the ski patrol. The ski patrol assists the injured person on the hill, applies any necessary first aid and brings the person down the hill to the first aid room. The accident report is filled out and the ski patrol will notify the club advisors of the injury. In the event that the injury is considered serious, a club advisor will attempt to contact the parents by telephone to inform them of the injury. If the ski patrol feels it would be unwise or uncomfortable for the student to ride the bus back to Northfield, then parents must arrange transportation for the injured person. If the parents cannot be reached or if the parents cannot arrange transportation for the injured student, a Northfield ambulance will be called to transport the person to the Northfield Hospital. In that event that more immediate help is necessary, a Red Wing ambulance will be called and the person will be taken to the nearest hospital, which is in Red Wing. In case the parents cannot be reached the Northfield Police will be notified and informed of the situation. Parents are urged to check their medical and hospital coverage to be sure it covers skiing and boarding injuries. No accident insurance is provided by the school or Welch Village.
