1 HOLMES MIDDLE SCHOOL SKI CLUB INFORMATION PACKET Student and Parent: Please read the entire packet. Parents must fill out and sign the permission form, emergency care sheet, and helmet waiver if your child will not be wearing proper head protection. These forms will be available online and in the Student Center. All forms must be turned in to Mrs. Estereicher along with payment in order for a student to be added to the trip.sign ups will begin on Monday December 15 th and end on Friday December 19 th at 3pm. It is first come first served (when the 40 spots are filled, the trip will be full). SPONSORS: Mrs. Estereicher and Mr. Hough DATES: This year we will ski at Mt. Brighton. We have two trips scheduled: JANUARY 15 and FEBRUARY 5. Students may sign up for one trip or both (we are limited to the first 40 students due to bus capacity). Buses leave at 4:15 p.m. and return to Holmes at 10:15 p.m. TO JOIN THE HOLMES SKI CLUB: 1. Parents and Ski Club members must read and discuss all rules and regulations. Students are responsible for knowing all policies and procedures. Keep the information packet at home for your reference throughout the season. 2. Parents must fill out the Emergency Care and Information Sheet. 3. Parents must fill out the Permission Form. 4. Any student who will not wear proper head protection must have a Helmet Waiver signed. 5. Return all forms to Mrs. Estereicher with payment 6. Students must wear a Holmes Ski Club badge (these will be provided the day of the trip and will clip on the students zipper). The badge will have the sponsors information in case they need to be contacted by ski patrol. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Estereicher at Holmes ext and leave a message or you may me at sesterei@livoniapublicschools.org. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
2 GENERAL PROCEDURES: Signing Up for the Ski Trip - Students are to sign up with Mrs. Estereicher the week of December 15 th. NO registrations will be allowed after 3pm on December 19 th. Do not wait until the last minute since it is first come first served. A table will be set up in the LMC before and after school. Students may also see Mrs. Estereicher during passing time in the Student Center. Reporting for Ski Trip - Students will go home after school and return to the building at 4pm. If you have your own equiplment, it must remain outside. The students will come into the building to check in, and then load their equipment on the bus once it arrives. Attendance - Students absent from school on the day of the ski trip cannot attend the ski trip. In the case of illness, a parent or guardian must notify Mrs. Estereicher or the school attendance office before 3 p.m. that their student will be unable to ski. The student must then see Mrs. Estereicher the day he/she returns to school in order to receive a refund. Students absent or tardy on the day after a ski trip will be considered for exclusion from further trips. Eating - No eating on the buses going to or from Mt. Brighton. Food may be purchased at Mt. Brighton or students may bring a sack lunch. Lockers are available at Mt.Brighton for students to store their lunch/snacks. Lessons - When students purchase a ticket to go skiing, that only includes their lift ticket. It is highly recommended that students take a lesson the first time they go skiing. Ski lessons are the key to becoming a better skier. Parents may sign off on their son/daughter taking a lesson if they feel comfortable with them skiing all areas (see permisison form). Lockers - Mt. Brighton does have lockers available for student use. Lockers are $5 or $7 (dependent on size), and the user creates a code which allows him/her to access the locker as many times as he/she desires. Lockers are available to use for shoes and personal items. Students should not bring expensive items such as i-pads, tablets or i-pods on the trips, as Mt. Brighton will not be held liable for missing items. Equipment - You are responsible for your own equipment. Do not leave your equipment unattended for even a short period of time. A free ski and snowboard corral is offered for theft protection. USE IT. It is located in the rental department. Accidents - In the event of an accident, the Ski Patrol will notify the ski sponsors. Students may also look for a chaperone, but are NOT to call home. A sponsor, if necessary, will notify parents promptly. ALWAYS look for a chaperone if you need help.
3 STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE: Please be aware that Livonia Public Schools does not insure students for accidental injuries during the school year. The personal injury insurance of the parent or guardian is assumed to cover any and all medical treatment for such injuries. Unfortunately, some parents or guardians have limited or no medical coverage. Each year the school district offers reasonably priced student accidental insurance plans. Coverage costs range from approximately $10- $100 a year. Application forms and brochures explaining the options are available at Central Office. OUR OBJECTIVE IS NOT TO SELL INSURANCE, BUT TO INFORM PARENTS AND GUARDIANS THAT THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NO MEDICAL COVERAGE. Clothing - Dress warmly and have water proof mitts or gloves for the rope tows. Do not wear long, loose hats or hair that can be caught on moving equipment. Rest often and drink warm liquids to avoid frostbite. On severe nights, bring a face covering or scarf. Goggles are also recommended. Two pairs of thin socks with air space are better than one heavy, thick pair. Special thermal ski socks are best. Windproof, waterproof jackets and pants are recommended. Leaving the Ski Area Unfortunately, there is no PA system over the hill for all calls. Students will be responsible to keep track of time to ensure they board the bus on time. Sponsors will recommend that students set an alarm on their phone or watch as a reminder. At 9:10pm, students that rented equipment need to stop skiing and return equipment. At 9:20, all students must stop skiing and report to the bus. By 9:25pm, all students must be on the bus. STUDENTS LATE TO THE BUS MAY BE DROPPED FROM THE SKI CLUB. All students are to be picked up at Holmes by 10:15 sharp. Students not picked up at 10:15 will be dropped from the club. Buses will unload in the South parking lot. Students will not be allowed to enter the school at this late hour to make phone calls, etc. Trip Cancellations - In the event that weather does not permit safe and fun skiing, trips may be canceled. Cancellation of trips will be announced prior to students leaving school on the day of the trip. Payment will be held for the following trip. If a student is unable to attend the next trip, he/she must see Mrs. Estereicher in order to receive a refund. CHAPERONES: There will be staff members from Holmes attending each trip. Please see one of us if you need anything. BEHAVIOR: Holmes Middle School has an excellent reputation - a reputation directly traceable to its proud and well-mannered students. All of Holmes Middle School rules and regulations regarding behavior and discipline that are in accordance with the school handbook are expected to be followed by you, the ski club member, at all times.
4 * Any student failing to comply with any reasonable request of a ski club sponsor or chaperone will be barred from future outings. * If a student has had a discipline problem during regular school hours, he/she may be excluded from ski club trips. PENALTIES: 1. A student may be dropped from the ski club if he/she is skiing unsafely and/or breaking Mt. Brighton s rules. 2. A student may be dropped from the ski club if he/she is late boarding the bus at Mt. Brighton. 3. A student may be dropped from the ski club if he/she is not picked up at the appropriate designated time at Holmes after the ski trip. There is no entrance to the building when the bus arrives back at school. Students will not have access to building telephones. They must have a reliable ride arranged in advance of the trip! 4. A student may be dropped from the ski club if he/she is found eating on the bus to or from Mt. Brighton, and/or exhibiting prohibited, unacceptable behavior at any time during the bus ride or the time at Mt. Brighton. This includes failure to follow school policies, Mt. Brighton policies, or directions from a chaperone, bus driver, or Mt. Brighton employee. 5. Students who sign up for a ski trip and do not show up for the trip will forfeit the money paid for the trip. ** Attending a ski trip does not excuse homework. Students who are frequently missing assignments following a ski club trip may be excluded from further trips. ************************************************************************** HOLMES MIDDLE SCHOOL SKI CLUB COSTS PER TRIP Students sign up for each trip individually. No one is permitted to sign up without a CHECK made out to HOLMES MIDDLE SCHOOL. We cannot accept cash. ** Please double check the correct price prior to writing the check to Holmes Middle School.** PRICES PER TRIP: LIF TICKET - NO RENTAL $40.00 LIFT TICKET WITH RENTAL $65.00 HELMET RENTAL ***We recommend all students wear a helmet $ Hr GROUP LESSON $10.00 ***We recommend that all new skiers/snowboarders take a lesson. Students have access to all areas of the hill. Taking a lesson will help the student determine skill level and what runs are appropriate for their level.
