NOV 2015 Dear Parents, Two months have passed since the beginning of the new school year. We have completed the first grading period, Halloween has come and gone and Advent preparations are soon to follow. As we approach the time of year when we turn our attention to thanking God for all of the blessings in our lives, I would like to focus on all of the wonderful things happening at St. Louise de Marillac School. Thanks to God for this great gift of Catholic education for our children. So many sacrifice to make sure we can continue to teach our faith each year. Thanks to all of our pastors, parishioners, parents, faculty and staff that so generously support this important mission of the Catholic Church. Thanks to parents for sharing your children with us at St. Louise de Marillac. They are some of the most respectful, hardworking, and generous boys and girls that I have encountered. Proof of their hard work is proudly displayed in the hallways and evident in the Terra Nova scores, AR points, number of hours accumulated on IXL Math, and the number of students on the 1st quarter Honor Roll. When interacting with students in the hallways, lunchroom, before and after school, I am amazed at their good manners and respect in complying with requests and instructions. Observing students taking care of one another when another student drops their lunch tray in the cafeteria or books in the hallway is heartwarming. Seeing those smiling faces each morning as they enter the building makes my day. Thanks for our faculty and staff as they continue their work for the mission of Catholic education. They have proven time and again that they are a team and that they care deeply about your children. No matter what has been asked of them, they have given from their hearts and I have seen nothing but hearts full of love thus far. Thanks be to God for all of the blessings He has bestowed upon us. Please continue to pray for us as we continue to work towards the goal of making St. Louise de Marillac the best school in every possible way for our children! God bless, Mr. Klase, Principal A Guardian Angel is a heavenly spirit assigned by God to watch over each individual during life. The doctrine of angels is part of the Church s constant Tradition. Angel means messenger in Greek. Angels are mentioned often in scripture, where they are not only messengers but defenders, companions, guides and guardians. The role of the Guardian (or protecting ) Angel is both to guide the person to good thoughts, works and words, and to preserve him from evil. The feast day was the official kickoff for the acts of kindness campaign in which the students (guardian angels) write down an act of kindness they witness and add a link to the kindness chain in their homerooms. We are extending these acts of kindness outside of the classrooms by selling AOK magnets to support the angels who protect our country and freedom through the wounded warrior project.
YEARBOOK Each year to capture all the activities at STL, photos are needed from all activities and sports. If you take any photos, consider uploading them at www.replayit.com to add to the images creating the memories of the school year. Cost of the book, until January 15, is $33 at which time the price will go up. Order a yearbook today by going to www.jostensyearbook.com. Top reasons to order yours now: When you grow old, you can impress others by remembering the names of those you knew in school. Your kids will enjoy a good laugh when they look at your hairstyle and clothing choices. You can relive some of the highlights of the year over and over. You will still have a book full of your great school photos when your computer crashes and you lose all of yours. You are in it! It costs about the same as a tank full of gas, but will last the rest of your life, not just a week. It's priceless! CAFETERIA VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED Have a change in your weekly schedule? Found a few hours that might support a much needed service? The St. Louise cafeteria is looking to fill several open timeslots for serving lunch to the study body. Service amounts to a few hours once a month (from 10:30am to 12:30pm) with other family members that support the school, dishing out the daily fare. Parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles or college students with a free afternoon are welcome to serve while enjoying the company of other s with children at the school. All who serve are invited to enjoy the daily lunch while catching up with the other volunteers. Below are the teams that are still in need of support. To run smooth and allow for scheduling issues, each team has open slots for 5 members. We have several teams that currently only have 2 volunteers (M,T,Th). This places a burden on both the team (difficult with scheduling conflicts) as well as the regular cafeteria staff who utilize this support during our children s lunch period. Please consider offering a few hours a month to support this wonderful service. Interested parties should contact Connie Lesh (clesh@ddiworld.com) or Beth Piacquadio (bjp1119@gmail.com) for more information.
Teen Center Youth groups have been part of the fabric of our STL 7 th 8 th grade communities for years. It's not always easy to capture the interest of teens when it comes to church & school involvement and spiritual growth. While at a critical stage in developing their beliefs and spirituality, teens often have varied interest in typical school lessons and activities and our teen centers are designed to capture their interest and can also further strengthen their friendships. Our first Teen Center of this year was held on September 18 th followed quickly by the October event. On October 30 th our 7 th & 8 th graders had a chance to hang out with their friends in their scariest or most original costumes!!! There were witches flying on broomsticks with black cats, ghosts, spiders, bats, goblins and skeletons. We listened to music, danced, sang songs, and played games. Teen Center was a memorable night and a lot of fun! Thanks to all that work hard to make these nights so special. Honor Roll Announcement The following seventh and eighth grade students have met the academic criteria necessary for the Honor Roll for the first nine week grading period.
Curriculum Night Curriculum night is a great chance each year for our teachers to roll out the welcome mat and give parents a glimpse of what we do every day. At curriculum night we give parents an overview of the materials in the classroom and the activities used to teach the information. In August, STL hosted our annual Curriculum night. This was a great opportunity for parents to learn more about what their students would be learning throughout the school year. Grades K 8 met with their teachers to find out more about the programs offered at the school. Our parents had a great chance to talk with our teachers and found out about the class schedule, homework expectations and plans for the year. Parents also had the chance to meet other parents and staff members. Thanks to everyone who came out! It was a great night! The Parents of our STL 4 th grade class received a warm welcome in September as they joined their children for lunch. At our VIP lunches, parents may pack their own brown bag lunch or everyone can buy from our school cafeteria. Our VIP lunches are surrounded by fun and celebration that bring students and parents together. For the brave moms and dads in the group there is also fun time that can be shared on the playground. Go down a slide, swing on a swing or even get in a round of jump rope. Whatever your plans, it is always a day to remember. Chick fil A Spirit Night Thank you to all who come out to our Spirit Nights to support STL! This is an easy way to raise money for our school. On Wednesday, October 7 th we celebrated STL in style at Chick fil A What is a Spirit Night? Spirit Nights at Chick fil A are the ultimate easy prep, little effort fund raiser! STL friends just invite the community to eat a delicious Chick fil A meal on our designated Spirit Night, and our group enjoys a share of the profits from that evening! How does it work? Keep your eyes and ears open for the next Spirit Nights, the more that participate the more we succeed. We love to see a great turnout for these events. We love and thank our STL students and staff who make our pep rallies loud and exciting to keep all the students enthusiastic for the upcoming games and to cheer on the team.
During the Great Depression, America saw the first of its soup kitchens. By the early 1930s, 12 million Americans were unemployed, so the need for assistance was increasing every day. This is when soup kitchens began to surface. Al Capone, most famous for his many gang related crimes in prohibition era Chicago, recognized the call to help. He opened a soup kitchen to benefit his crime ridden neighborhood and his own image. His shelter fed unemployed residents up to three meals a day consisting of soup and bread. This tradition has become the standard. Today, soup and bread remain staples at many soup kitchens. Homeless people and struggling families can find shelter, a warm meal and friendly faces in soup kitchens. All volunteers at soup kitchens make a difference in somebody's life. And while you may find yourself short on free time, the rewards of volunteering at a soup kitchen will be worth it. Pittsburgh s Jubilee Kitchen started 36 years ago to feed the poor. Jubilee Association was founded by a core of people dedicated to Judeo Christian values and Catholic Worker ideals of honoring the human dignity of each guest, non judgmentally. From the beginning they have been committed to encouraging these values among the staff and many volunteers. Our 8 th grade students at St. Louise have the opportunity to volunteer at the Jubilee Soup Kitchen and be part of the group that is there to serve the guests of the kitchen which draws approximately 125 guests a day, more at the end of the month when SSI and other funds have been exhausted. Three hundred sixty five days a year ever since, their doors have been open to serve whoever comes to them. We are proud of our students who make a difference for this program. 8 th Grade Recognition In October we celebrated our upcoming graduates with an 8th Grade Recognition ceremony for the STL Cheerleaders and Football players and Volleyball players. For our cheerleaders and football athletes the school gathered to give a round of applause during a Varsity Pre Game ceremony on the field honoring the 8 th grade football players and cheerleaders as well as their parents. The Volleyball players were also honored in October as they clinched the section champion. The team placed 4th in the diocesan finals on Oct 30th (out of 43 varsity teams).
