Vmc Demonstration (AFH 12-2 / PTS 2-34 PVT AND 2-35 COMM / POH 4-18) As altitude increases, the Duchess produces less power because of the reduced air density entering the engine induction system. The power loss will result in a Vmc lower than stall speed at higher altitudes. Therefore, always recover at the first indication of loss of directional control, stall warning, or buffet (See Figure 12-21, page 12-30, AFH). Vmc defined: minimum control speed with the critical engine inoperative Under the small airplane certification regulations currently in effect, the flight test pilot must be able to (1) stop the turn that results when the critical engine is suddenly made inoperative within 20-d of the original heading, using maximum rudder deflection and a maximum of 5-d bank, and (2) thereafter, maintain straight flight with not more than a 5-d bank. Standards: Recognize indications of loss of directional control, stall warning or buffet Recover promptly by simultaneously reducing power sufficiently on the operating engine while decreasing the angle of attack as necessary to regain airspeed and directional control Recover within 20-d of the entry heading and advance power smoothly on operating engine and accelerate to Vxse / Vyse, as appropriate, +/- 5 knots, during the recovery. Drag Demonstration The Drag Demonstration proves that the optimal rate of climb occurs at Vyse in a clean configuration. The demo also illustrates performance penalties when an aviator does not fly a light twin at the optimal configuration.
