SCSU BY THE NUMBERS 14/15 The Huskies were ranked 14th in this week s USCHO.com Division I men s hockey poll and they were also ranked 15th in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Magazine poll on Nov. 26. SCSU has been ranked among the top 20 for five consecutive weeks now. The previous week, SCSU was ranked #12 in the nation by the two college hockey polls. 4 St. Cloud State University junior Nic Dowd ranks second in the country with four game winning goals this season. He needs just one more game winner this season to tie the team season record of five game winners. Ryan Lasch (2008-09 and 2007-08), Andreas Nodl (2006-07), Tyler Arnason (2000-01) and Matt Cullen (1996-97) each had five game winners in a season and are tied for the team record here at SCSU. MORE NEWS AND NOTES... LAST YEAR: The Huskies (17-17-5, 12-12-4 WCHA) placed sixth in the WCHA regular season standings. In first round play of the WCHA playoffs last year, the Huskies won two games in a series vs. UNO at the NHEC. At the WCHA Final Five in 2012, the Huskies lost to North Dakota by a 4-1 tally...scsu received votes in the final USCHO.com Division I national poll of the 2011-12 season. COACHING STAFF: SCSU will be led this season by eighth-season head coach Bob Motzko. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko earned WCHA Coach of the Year notice in 2006 and 2007. The Huskies assistant coaches included five-year veteran Mike Gibbons, first-year coach Garrett Raboin and second-year volunteer goalie coach Dave Rogalski. Matt Chapman serves as the team s coordinator of hockey and video operations and Jeremiah Minkel is back once again as the team s equipment manager in 2012-13. THE NATIONAL: St. Cloud State University will join the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in 2013-14. The Huskies accepted the invitation to join The National in 2011, and they will join Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Nebraska Omaha, Miami University, University of North Dakota and Western Michigan as members of the new league. SCSU will remain as a member of the WCHA until the 2013-14 season. The Huskies became an NCAA Division I affiliate in 1987-88 and they joined the WCHA in 1990-91. MEET YOUR CAPTAINS: St. Cloud State seniors Ben Hanowski and Drew LeBlanc will return as team captains for the 2012-13 season. The pair also served as team captains during the 2011-12 campaign. SCSU junior defender Nick Jensen will serve as an alternate captain for the Huskies during the upcoming 2012-13 campaign. SCSU COACH BOB MOTZKO YEARS AT SCSU: 8th season CAREER RECORD: 144-114-34 WCHA CAREER RECORD: 95-82-27 WCHA Coach of the Year 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year 2006 The Motzko Story Bob Motzko will begin season eight with the Huskies in 2012-13. The 2006 and 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year, Motzko has guided the Huskies to five WCHA Final Five appearances, a second place regular season finish in the WCHA in 2007 and a berth in the 2007, 2008 and 2010 NCAA Division I tournaments. Motzko has charted an impressive 144-114-34 overall record and has seen the Huskies ranked among the nation s top 20 teams for more than 76 weeks during his tenure at SCSU. The Huskies have advanced to the WCHA Final Five in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 and they reached the WCHA Final Five championship games twice during the Motzko era in 2010 and 2006. Motzko also guided the Huskies to their first-ever NCAA playoff victory with a 4-3 2OT win over Northern Michigan at the Western Regional in 2010. SCSU s Ryan Lasch was a Hobey Baker Award Top 10 finalist and an AHCA All-American in 2008. In 2007, Motzko saw SCSU standout Bobby Goepfert named a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist. SCSU freshman forward Andreas Nodl was named the 2007 HCA Division I Rookie of the Year and the 2007 WCHA Rookie of the Year. SCSU players have gained All-America honors three-times during Motzko s tenure. A former SCSU hockey player and graduate of St. Cloud State, Motzko served as a men s hockey assistant coach at the University of Minnesota since 2001. He was part of two NCAA Division I national championship teams in 2002 and 2003, and helped the Gophers win WCHA playoff crowns in 2003 and 2004. His four recruiting classes at Minnesota were considered among the best in the nation, and Motzko helped produce one Hobey Baker Award winner, three first team All-Americans, two second team All-Americans and many All- WCHA honorees at Minnesota. A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State University, Motzko was a two-year varsity letterwinner for the SCSU hockey team from 1984-86. Motzko began his coaching career in 1986-87 as an assistant coach for the legendary Herb Brooks at SCSU - and also worked with former SCSU head coach Craig Dahl. Motzko went on to serve as general manager and head coach of the USHL s North Iowa Huskies from 1987 through 1991. In 1989, Motzko led the North Iowa squad to a United State Junior A national championship and was named that year s USHL Coach of the Year. In 1991, Motzko was named associate head coach at Miami University (Ohio), where he helped lead the RedHawks to a Central Collegiate Hockey Association title and an NCAA tournament berth in 1992-93. He served for one season as an associate head coach at the University of Denver from 1993-94, before returning to Miami University in 1994. Motzko was named general manager and head coach of the USHL s Sioux Falls Stampede in 1998. He led the Stampede to a 77-31-6 record in the team s first two seasons in the USHL, and in 2000, Motzko was named the USHL General Manager of the Year. A native of Austin, Minn., Motzko and his wife Shelley are the parents of three children. They currently reside in St. Cloud, Minn. MORE NEWS AND NOTES... LAST WEEK: The Huskies split a two-game set at Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 23-24. SCSU opened the weekend with a 2-1 loss at UMD, as the lone goal of the Huskies was marked by Kalle Kossila...on Nov. 24, the Huskies rebounded with a 5-1 victory at UMD. Nic Dowd carded two goals and the game winner for SCSU, while teammate Ben Hanowski scored 1g/2a. Ryan Faragher was the goalie of record in the game with 32 saves. The victory helped SCSU avoid the sweep, which is something that the Huskies have avoided since Oct. 12-13. WCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: SCSU sophomore netminder Ryan Faragher turned in two top efforts during the weekend trip to UMD. For his work, Faragher gained WCHA Player of the Week notice. In the Huskies 2-1 loss on Nov. 23, Faragher allowed just one power play goal and made 27 saves. He finished the weekend by making 32 saves and giving up just one power play goal in the 5-1 win on Nov. 24. Faragher charted Ryan Faragher 59 saves in the two games and allowed only two goals. He lowered his goals against average to 2.14 and raised his save rate to.927 with his play this weekend. Faragher currently ranks 4th in the WCHA for goals against average and third for save percentage. FRESH FACE: SCSU freshman forward Kalle Kossila charted two more goals in play against UMD on Nov. 23-24. Kossila now ranks fifth in the nation among DI rookies with 1.00 points per game. Kossila ranks second among WCHA freshman players with 10 points scored this winter. GOOD TO HAVE HIM BACK: A series highlight was the return of senior forward Ben Hanowski to the lineup on Nov. 23. Hanowski had missed five games as an injury scratch. He finished the weekened on Nov. 24 with a goal and two assists in the Huskies 5-1 win at UMD. On the season, Hanowski now has 4g/4a. Hanowski is now 10 points away from joining the Huskies 100-point club. He has 49 goals and 41 assists n four seasons as a Husky. DOWD I: Junior Nic Dowd carded two goals and one assist in the win at UMD on Nov. 24. The offensive outburst by Dowd pushed him into the team s scoring lead with eight goals and nine assists (17 points). He currently ranks sixth in the country with 17 points this season and sixth in the country with eight goals. Dowd also leads WCHA players (overall games played) in points and goals. DOWD II: Nic Dowd posted his fourth game winning goal of the season on Nov. 24. Dowd leads the WCHA with GWGs and he is closing in the on the SCSU team record of five game winners scored in a season.
