Code of Conduct Statement General Information Related to All Shows By making entries, all exhibitors and others associated with the entry, agree to abide by the following guidelines: Exhibitors shall at all times conduct themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship and reflect the highest standards of honor and dignity to promote the advancement of agricultural education. Animals shall not be administered drugs other than in strict accordance with applicable federal and state regulations and rules. Animals shall not be exhibited if the drugs administered in accordance with federal and state regulations and rules affect the animal's performance or appearance at the event. Exhibitors are required to present and care for animals in a humane and ethical manner. Failure to adhere to any rules shall result in the disqualification of the entry and exhibitor. Exhibitor Eligibility: The Michigan Beef Showcase, Spartan Classic and Jackpot Hog Shows are open to all Michigan youth residents that have reached their 8th birthday and are not yet 21 by January 1, 2012. The Beef Showcase is also open to adult exhibitors. The B&B Northern Exposure Club Lamb Show is open to youth exhibitors, 8 years of age and not yet 21, from Michigan and out-of-state. (All sheep from out of state must have health papers from their state of origin). Age for contests will be determined as of 1/1/12. Entry Deadline: Entries for all events must be postmarked by May 25, 2012. Entries must be made by the exhibitor and mailed to Michigan State University, Dept. of Animal Science, 1287 Anthony Hall, E. Lansing, MI 48824. Entry Fees: Beef Showcase $40 / head Spartan Classic Swine Show $15 / head + stall fee B&B Northern Exposure Lamb Show $15 / head (plus stall fee Spartan Jackpot Swine Show $15 / head if you are not participating in the Saturday Show) Camper space $10 / night Entry fees are non-refundable. Entries without payment or entries sent in with incorrect, incomplete or illegible information will not be accepted and will be returned to the exhibitor. Late Entries: Beef will be $75 / head. Late entries for Spartan Classic will be $30 / head plus the stall fee, and MSU B&B Northern Exposure will be $30 / head. Housing and Camping Accommodations: There are several restaurants in close proximity. Concessions will also be available in the Pavilion. Camping spaces are available at a cost of $10 per night. Please indicate request on the entry form. Camping permits are required and will be available upon arrival at the show. Dogs Are Not permitted in the Pavilion during these events. Tie-outs: Space is available for night tie-outs for cattle. Bedding: The preferred bedding is straw or wood chips. Both will be available for purchase at the site. Bedding is to be brought from home or is to be purchased from the official supplier to the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. Junior Exhibitors: Junior show exhibitors must show their own animal unless species chairpersons grant special permission. In the event that a substitute showperson is approved in any of the junior shows, the substitute showperson must be a registered exhibitor in this show. *All sheep pens must be cleaned out before leaving the pavilion. The Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education on the campus of Michigan State University is considered a classroom facility. As such, the use or possession of alcoholic beverages or smoking in the Pavilion is prohibited. 3

Michigan Beef Showcase June 9-10, 2012 Chairperson Kenneth Geuns, Livestock Youth Specialist 517/353-2924 or geuns@msu.edu Judge: Tom Hawks, Earlville, Illinois The Beef Showcase provides an opportunity for youth and adults to participate in a statewide beef cattle event. It is our intent to provide an activity that prepares youth for many of their upcoming national junior beef breed shows through exhibiting cattle and participating in the various skills contests. We also hope that it is a great opportunity for those youth that will not be able to attend a Junior National, to experience it here in Michigan. Junior exhibitors must show their own animal unless species chairpersons grant special permission. In the event that a substitute showperson is approved, the substitute showperson must be a registered exhibitor in this show. Proper identification of junior exhibitor may be required, at the discretion of the show committee. General Rules 1. Breed Requirements: In order to exhibit in a specific breed for the Beef Showcase, entries must conform to the following requirements for registration certificates: Breed Breeding Cattle Steers Angus Purebred Purebred Chianina Percentage Percentage Hereford/Polled Hereford Purebred Purebred Limousin Percentage Percentage Maine Anjou Percentage Percentage Shorthorn Purebred Purebred Shorthorn Plus Registered Registered Simmental Percentage (50% or above) Percentage (50% or above) In addition, all other breeds are welcome to participate in the All Other Registered Breeds (AORB) division. If, in the future, there are sufficient numbers of cattle entered within a specific breed not listed above, a separate breed show may be held. For heifers and steers that have a registration certificate but do not satisfy the criteria listed above, those cattle will show in the AORB division. In addition, classes will be available in the Beef Showcase for crossbred and other steers, and market heifers that are not eligible for registering in a specific breed. Please refer to the schedule on page 2 for a listing of those breeds. Any animal is eligible to enter and compete in only one breed regardless if animal is registered in more than one breed association registry. 2. Grooming Regulations: Use of false tail heads or adding of hair or hemp is prohibited. Coloring agents, except powders, may only be used on the legs and tail switch. No coloring agents may be used above the animal's flank. This includes colored show foams (black, red, etc.). Use of powders is prohibited. No forced administration or pumping of fluids to create gut fill will be allowed. Violation will result in the disqualification of the entry and/or exhibitor. 3. Ownership Deadlines: Open beef exhibitor entries must be owned by the exhibitor by entry deadline. Junior exhibitor entries must be solely owned by the exhibitor by May 1, 2012. 4. All cattle will be weighed. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) data for breeding cattle, if available, from the respective breed associations will be supplied to the judge for their use in determining final placings. 5. Each breed association will receive a 10 x 10 booth space for breed promotional material, at no charge. 6. Michigan State University staff will collect performance data and assist with each of the breed shows or exhibitions. 7. Original registration papers must be presented at check-in time for all cattle that will be shown in a breed division. Registration applications will not be accepted. 8. Several of the breeds are conducting special events as part of the Beef Showcase. These include: Michigan Angus Association - State Open and Junior Preview Show: Breeding cattle, steers, and junior showmanship Michigan Shorthorn Association State Open and Junior Preview Show: Breeding cattle, steers, and junior showmanship Michigan Chi Association - State Open Show: Breeding cattle and steers Maine Anjou Association of Michigan - State Open Show: Breeding cattle and steers Michigan Simmental Association - State Open Show and Futurity Show: Breeding cattle and steers Hereford/Polled Hereford, and Limousin, - Open Show: Breeding cattle and steers 9. Breed entries that do not have tattoos, tattoos that do not match the registration papers, or are not legible will not be permitted to show. 10. The name listed on the entry form as exhibitor must also be listed on the animal's registration certificate as "owner". 4

11. There will be classes for bulls born on or after January 1, 2010, heifers born on or after September 1, 2010 and cow/calf pairs. In the cow/calf classes, the calf must be the cow's most recent natural calf and must have been born on or after September 1, 2011. Cow/calf pairs will count as one entry fee unless the calf will also be shown in a class as an individual. In this case, two entry fees must be submitted. 12. All breeding females, bulls and breed steers competing in the junior division must be registered solely in the name of the youth exhibitor. 13. Steers will be shown by breed. Classes will also be available for crossbred and other steers, and market heifers, that are not eligible for registering in a specific breed, and will be shown by weight. Heifers shown in breeding classes may not be shown in market heifer classes. 14. Breeding classes will be broken by age after all cattle are checked in. Every attempt will be made to follow the guidelines of the respective breed associations. 15. Ribbons will be presented by the Michigan Beef Showcase in each regular class. All other awards, within a breed show, will be supplied by the respective breed associations. Beef Showmanship and Beef Skills Contests 1. There will be three age divisions: 9-12, 13-15, and 16-20 years of age (Age as of 1/1/12). No entry fee required for these contests. Beef Showmanship 1. Showmanship is open to all junior beef exhibitors at this show and will be held on Saturday evening. Please include exhibitor birth date on entry form. Beef Skillathon 1. Contestants will be evaluated on their ability to identify a variety of items related to beef cattle. These might include breeds, cuts of meat, feeds, equipment, parts of the animal, health, production, etc. It is suggested that contestants refer to the following for information to prepare for the event: Michigan Extension Bulletin 4-H 1188: Your Market Beef Project North Central Region Extension Beef Skills for Life Material: Available in your county Extension office Retail and wholesale cuts of beef charts Feed tags from your local grain elevator Beef Graphic Design Contest 1. Beef graphic design project should promote the beef industry, a specific breed, your junior organization or a similar topic. 2. Create a promotional flyer or brochure (8 ½ x 11 size). This contest will enable participants to use computer technology to design materials to educate the public about the beef industry or your organization. 3. Copyrighted characters such as cartoon characters can not be used. 4. The back of the design project should include the following information: name, address, phone number, birthdates, and resources. 5. Posters will be judged on the following areas: originality, message, attracts attention, use of space and design. Herdsman s Quiz 1. Contestants will be tested on their general knowledge of beef cattle. Categories will include: nutrition, management, health, reproduction, genetics, fitting and showing, selection, meat products, and others that pertain to beef production and promotion. Attention Junior Angus Exhibitors: The Michigan Angus Auxiliary will again be sponsoring a showmanship in conjunction with the Preview Show on Sunday, June 12 th. There will be 4 divisions (junior, intermediate, senior and senior national). Contestants in the SENIOR NATIONAL DIVISION must meet all the requirements for the national contest to be eligible for this division. Copies of these rules will be posted at the show and are available from Nancy Thelen prior to the contest. Special attention should be paid to the following rules: (1) Contestants must be junior, life or regular members of the American Angus Association PRIOR to participating in their state contest. (2) Contestants must be Michigan residents and members of the Michigan Jr. Association. (3) Contestants must be at least 16 years of age by January 1, 2012, and not have had their 21st birthday before January 1, 2012. (Birth dates from January 1, 1991 through December 31, 1995.) (4) Any contestant who has participated in any of the previous national junior Angus showmanship contests is automatically ineligible for ensuing national showmanship competition. (5) To be eligible, each contestant must presently own registered Angus Cattle. (6) Youth who are interested in competing in this contest must register on or before May 15 th by contacting Nancy Thelen and providing their American Angus Association member code. 5

Proper Identification, TB Testing, and Health Requirements Identification All cattle participating in the 2012 Michigan Beef Showcase must have an USDA approved 840 RFID tag. Alphanumeric metal ear tag or official breed registry tattoo are NOT acceptable in place of an RFID tag. In addition, TB Test Requirements All Michigan cattle regardless of age must meet one of the following requirements with respect to TB testing: For cattle in the Modified Accredited Zone (MAZ): (Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Presque Isle counties, and those parts of Iosco and Ogemaw counties north of the southern boundaries of the Huron National Forest and the Au Sable State Forest) A negative whole herd test within 12 months AND a negative individual TB test within 60 days AND movement permit are required. For cattle in the Modified Accredited Advanced Subzone 1: (Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, and Otsego counties) - Cattle from herds WITH a verified wildlife risk mitigation action plan NO TB testing is required, but a movement permit is required - Cattle from herds WITHOUT a verified wildlife risk mitigation action plan - A negative individual TB test within 60 days and movement permit is required. For cattle in the Modified Accredited Advanced Subzone 2 & 3: (All remaining counties in the Lower Peninsula outside of the MAZ and Subzone 1) - NO TB testing or movement permit is required For cattle in the TB Free Zone (Upper Peninsula) NO TB testing or movement permit is required. Health Requirements All cattle must be dehorned if horn length is greater than two inches. Cattle infected with a communicable disease may not be brought to the show. To meet the health standards required to show, animals need to be free of illness including but not limited to: o Clinical signs of respiratory disease (watery eyes, nasal discharge, elevated temperature, excessive slobbering) o Diarrhea o Active ringworm and/or warts o Identifiable external parasites Evidence of surgical, conformation or any other unethical alterations will result in the animal and exhibitor being disqualified from competition. Animals not meeting these standards are to be removed from the Pavilion immediately upon notification to the exhibitor and/or parents to retain his/her ability to exhibit in future B&B shows. All livestock are subject to inspection by a licensed, accredited veterinarian anytime during the show. Entry Fee is $15 per lamb if entered by May 25, 2012. Entry fee is $20.00 per lamb after May 27 and will be accepted until day of show. Stall fee is $11.00 per stall unless paid with Saturday show entry. 2. Premiums/Awards: Grand Champion Lamb will receive $250 cash and prize, Reserve Grand Champion Lamb will receive $150 cash and prize. Class premiums will be paid to the top 4 in class. Market lambs will show in weight divisions. Division Champions will receive $35 cash and prize. Reserve Division Champions will receive $25 cash and prize. 3. There is no limit on the number of sheep entries per exhibitor, however; only two premiums will be paid per exhibitor per class. Awards or premiums will be presented in each of the contests. 4. Sheep pens must be cleaned out before leaving the Pavilion. Exhibitors must use only pens that are assigned for use at the Michigan Junior Sheep Spectacular and Northern Exposure Lamb Show. 5. All sheep must remain inside the MSU Pavilion once they are checked in. 6. Sheep with visible prolapse will not be allowed to be exhibited. 7. All market lambs must be slick shorn within 5 days prior to weigh in at this show. 8. No muzzles on lambs at any time. 9. Pens must be bedded with natural bedding (wood shavings, straw, etc.). No carpet. 10. Humane handling practices of sheep are required at all times. 11. No drench feeding of lambs. If drenching is necessary for the health of the animal, exhibitor must contact a sheep committee member. 12. In the show ring, after the sheep is set (or needs to be reset) and the exhibitor is bracing the lamb, the front feet must be on the ring surface. 13. Health Requirements - Sheep with clinical signs of infectious, contagious, or toxicological disease will not be permitted to show and should not be unloaded at the show site. In addition, because of the USDA requirements for inter and/or intrastate movement of sheep, the Michigan Junior Sheep Spectacular will require that all sheep (breeding stock and market lambs) must have official USDA Identification (ID) ear tags. Market Lambs 1. Classes will be determined by weight on day of show. Classes will be divided with approximately equal numbers per class. There will be three division champions and reserve champions. All Suffolk, Hampshire, Oxford, Shropshire, Natural Colored, and black-faced crossbreds will show by weight in Division 1 through 3. All white face, speckles and other breeds will show by weight in Division 4. 2. This show is open to out of state exhibitors. All out-of-state lambs must have health papers with respective State stamp. 3. All lambs entered in this show will be weighed in on Sunday morning. 4. A commercial ewe lamb class will also be offered. The lamb can either be show in the market class or commercial ewe lamb class but NOT both. Jackpot Showmanship 1. Showmanship will immediately follow the selection of the Grand & Reserve Champion Market Lamb and will proceed from youngest to oldest. 2. Showmanship classes will be divided by age. Please include the exhibitor s birth date on the entry form. A $5.00 fee will be collected at the gate. Payback 50% to 1 st place, 30% to 2 nd place and 20% to 3 rd place in each age division. 3. Exhibitors must show their own animal. If exhibitors are late to their showmanship class, they will not be allowed to enter any remaining classes. Educational Contest 1. A livestock judging class will be held as an educational contest. There will be two divisions: Junior (8-14 yrs) and Senior (15-21 yrs). 2. Contestants will be give 12 minutes to judge the class followed by 10 questions. Ties will be broken based on questions scores. Prizes will be awarded in each division. 7

All hogs must be checked in by 9:00 a.m. Each exhibitor will be required to weigh their own pig on the official scales and turn in weigh cards at the office. The show will start in on time. Market and Preview Hog Show 1. Hogs will be shown by weight. Barrows or gilts are eligible. CHANGE for 2012: There will no longer be a separate prospect and progress division. Weight division champions and reserves will be selected after every 4 to 5 classes. An overall champion and reserve champion will be selected. The Top Five Overall Hogs will be selected. Only division champion and reserve division champions are eligible. 2. Entry fee is $30.00 per hog after May 27 and will be accepted until day of show. 3. Hogs do not need a pseudo rabies test. 4. Please refer to the schedule for unloading times. No unloading of tack or hogs is permitted until 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening. 5. Top two hogs in each class will be re-weighed for accuracy and must weigh within 10 pounds of reported weight. Any variance of more than 10 pounds will result in disqualification. 6. Premiums will be awarded, if funds are available, and will be prorated according to the total number of hogs entered. 7. Individuals entering more than one pig per exhibitor: Exhibitor may purchase only one (1) pen per every two hogs. If an individual pen is needed, exhibitor will be responsible for providing a divider panel. Swine Showmanship and Pigathon Contests 1. There will be three age divisions: 9-12, 13-15, and 16-20 years of age (Age as of 1/1/12). No entry fee required for these contests. Swine Showmanship 1. Classes will be divided by age of exhibitors and awards will be given to the top 10 participants in each age division. Please include exhibitor s birthdates on entry card. Only youth that enter and exhibit their own animal in the show may participate. Youth must show their own animal in showmanship. Pigathon 1. Youth can test their knowledge of the pork industry by participating in the swine pigathon. Topics may include management, nutrition, health and diseases, quality assurance, breed identification, live animal and carcass evaluation, and cuts of pork. Special Overall Awards Spartan Classic Junior Hog Show The purpose of these special overall awards is to recognize youth that excel in several of the contests included in the Spartan Classic. Youth can compete in the live show, showmanship, and pigathon contests of the swine show to be eligible. Special awards will be presented to top exhibitors. Michigan Swine Youth Challenge Exhibitors that are enrolled in the Michigan Swine Youth Challenge (MSYC) are eligible to use their placing in the Spartan Classic Hog show. If no weight card is turned in, and entries have been made in the Jackpot show, the weight from the Saturday show will be used. 2. No weight limits. No divisions for market and prospect. 3. Classes will be broke by weight and posted Sunday morning. Top two hogs in each class will be re-weighed for accuracy and must weigh within 10 pounds of reported weight. Any variance of more than 10 pounds will result in disqualification. 4. Entry Fee is $15 / pig. Entry fee may be paid at the time of Spartan Classic entry. 5.
