History St. Anton am Arlberg The birthplace of alpine skiing and modern cable car technology Six pioneers from St. Anton founded the Arlberg Ski Club in 1901. Two years later, Hannes Schneider revolutionised the technique used in alpine skiing and founded Austria s first ski school. In 1937, the first cable car designed for operation in winter was constructed the Galzigbahn in St. Anton. In 1901, six pioneers from St. Anton founded the Arlberg Ski Club, which organised its first open ski race in 1904. The participants had to trudge 1,000 metres up through the snow from St. Anton to the starting line at the Ulmer Hütte on the Valluga mountain. The long-distance downhill run took skiers from the Valluga across the Galzig mountain to St. Anton. It soon became clear that the Telemark style usually used up until that point for the high Alpine terrain on the Arlberg had to be changed, as the lunge demanded exceptional stamina and always ended in a fall. 13-year-old Hannes Schneider from Arlberg was to revolutionise the alpine skiing technique: he was the first to transfer his weight to take bends and went into a squat for schuss skiing. In 1907, he was already teaching his new stem turn technique to guests at the Alte Post hotel in St. Anton. In 1920, he founded Austria s first ski school and starred in 15 mountain and skiing films over the next few years. The first of the legendary Arlberg-Kandahar races was held in 1928 in St. Anton a milestone for alpine skiing s breakthrough onto the international scene. From 1937 onwards pioneering facts of cable car engineering on the Arlberg In 1937, the pioneers from the Arlberg constructed the first cable car designed for operation in winter in the Alpine region of St. Anton on the Galzig mountain the Galzigbahn. The St. Christophbahn and the Vallugabahn followed in the 1950s, the latter being the highest mountain transport system in Austria. They also built the country s first double chairlift with fixed seats on the Kapall mountain. The systems were further renovated in the 1960s. The service was also expanded with the addition of the Vallugalift, the Osthangbahn and the Tanzbödenlift among others. Regular investment in enhancing the offering continued into the 1970s, including opening the Rendlbahn, which provided access to the surrounding region via three T-bar lifts. As well as investing continuously in avalanche barriers, modification to the terrain and snowmaking facilities, new systems were built in the 1980s, including the Valfagehrbahn, the Zammermoosbahn, the Schindlergratbahn, the Rifflbahn I + II, the Mattunbahn and the renovated Kapallbahn. Over the next ten years, more investment continued to be made in artificial snow and constructing slopes. Existing systems were also modernised and new ones built, such as the Gampenbahn and the Kapallbahn. In the years leading up to the 2001 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the focus was on Gampen and Kapall: upgrading the snowmaking facilities and opening the Fangbahn and the Nassereinbahn. The 97 cable cars and lifts that are on the Arlberg today now form a genuine high-tech lift park. When it was built in 2006, the new Galzigbahn was unlike any cable car anywhere in the world a state-of-the-art funitel combined with innovative ultra-large-wheel technology. Wheels with an impressive diameter of 9.3 m allow passengers ground-level access to the gondolas. In 2009, the Rendlbahn was replaced by an 8-seater monocable ropeway and the new Rendl Restaurant was opened. Four years later, the new Tanzbödenbahn on the Galzig went into operation: a detachable 6-seater chairlift with weather-protection hoods and automatic child safety lock another innovation in cable car technology. The next milestone was set in the winter season of 2016/17: building the Flexenbahn between Stuben/Rauz and Zürs makes Ski Arlberg Austria s largest ski area and one of the five biggest in the world, boasting 87 cable cars and lifts, 305 kilometres of ski slopes and 200 kilometres of deep-snow runs. The new Albonabahn II and the Trittkopfbahnen I and II have also been built as part of this project.
