Rideau Canal North Tour Smiths Falls to Ottawa June 28 to July 1, 2017 The Rideau Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the four-day row you will observe the canal s remarkable landscape, charming lock stations and towns, active farmland, cottage and urban areas, mixed forests, cattail marshes and a varied and healthy wildlife population. The Ottawa New Edinburgh Club (ONEC) is organizing this leg of the Row3Capitals Relay. The tour ends in Ottawa on Canada Day; the final take-out point will be governed by Canada 150 activities. Celebrating Canada Day in Ottawa is a unique experience, especially this year, on the 150 th Anniversary of Confederation. Itinerary June 28 Early morning departure from Smiths Falls to Merrickville. Distance approx 23 km June 29 Early morning departure from Merrickville to Rideau River Provincial Park. Distance approx 23 km June 30 Early morning departure from Rideau River PP, end point TBD and dependant on weather and boat storage availability. Distance approx 30 km July 1 Early morning departure to tentative take-out at Mooney s Bay (Hog s Back Locks). De-rig and load boats for transport to ONEC. Distance approx 15 km July 2 Optional Brunch at ONEC. This tour is a Sculling for Sight event to raise funds for The FOUNDATION FIGHTING BLINDNESS Over 1 million Canadians are living with blinding retinal eye diseases. Some were born blind. Others have experienced vision loss as teenagers or during adulthood. The FFB s mission is to lead the fight against blindness by advancing retinal disease research, education and public awareness. 2 Degree of Difficulty This is an intermediate to expert tour in coxed touring quads. All scullers should have undertaken a multi-day rowing tour and be capable of sculling 35 km in a day. (Please note that in touring, the stroke is slower to conserve energy and we share coxing duties.) Seat Sharing During a tour, everyone rows all the time, although coxing duties are rotated. Generally you occupy a seat for the entire tour. On the Canada 150 Row3Capitals Relay, you may choose to occupy a seat for the entire tour or share a seat on alternate or consecutive days. Rowers are responsible for making their own sharing arrangement. The Rideau Canal North Tour cost is approximately $175 which includes 4 lunches, snacks / water, conveyance of rowers, souvenir t-shirt, boat launch, overnight storage fees, etc. Accommodations and dinners are not included. Group reservation ID: Row3Capitals Relay Dates: June 27 and 28 (Tuesday and Wednesday). Check-in 2 PM, check-out 11 AM. Rooms: 10 rooms with 2 Double beds, 5 rooms with 1 Queen bed and 1 pullout sofa. Maximum of 4 persons per room. Rate: $109.99 based on 2 adults per room, continental breakfast included. Over two adults, there will be an additional charge of $15 PP, children under 12 are free. Reservation details: Rooms may be booked now. Tour participants have until May 27, 2017 to book these rooms at the group rate. After this date, the rooms will no longer be held for our group and anyone booking after this date will be charged regular rates and availability will be on a first come, first served basis. June 29/30, July 1 Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, 172 Residence Commons, Ottawa, ON. ONEC has contracted with Carleton University directly for this 3-night accommodation package. Please advise if you require accommodation at Carleton (see registration form below). All arrivals check-in at the Residence Reception Desk located on the 2 nd floor of Residence Commons. The desk is open 24/7. Check-in time is after 3 PM on the day of arrival (June 29) and check-out is prior to 11:00 AM on day of departure (July 2). Residence rooms consist of one or two single beds / desks per room that share a washroom with the adjoining room. Rooms will be made up with bed linen, 1 towel and 1 facecloth per bed. Housekeeping is not provided. Please note that NO outside food or beverage shall be brought into general meeting and facility space for consumption. This policy applies to all indoor and outdoor space on campus with the exception of personal residence suites / rooms. Buffet breakfast is included and is served between 06:30 and 09:00 AM. Lost or damaged meal cards will be replaced at a cost of $5.00 plus HST per card (repayable to ONEC). Lost cards must be reported immediately. July 1, 2017 There will many Sesquicentennial events in Ottawa to participate in or observe. Parliament Hill will be busy! Many road closures restrict car access to the centre of Ottawa on Canada Day (usually starting around 6:00 AM). From Carleton University (located close to the take-out area at Mooney s Bay) there will be bus service and O-Train service to downtown Ottawa. ONEC is organizing bike rentals for those interested (see registration form).
