THE CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2017 District Governor s Message Barb Redder District Governor 2016-17 Casper Five Trails Rotary Club This month we celebrate Rotary s 112th birthday. On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehr s office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. The purpose of this first meeting was Harris s desire for fellowship. The meetings would rotate between the offices of the members, leading the members to call their club Rotary. From these humble beginnings sprang an International service organization with more than 1.2 million members around the world. Many aspects of Rotary have changed since February 1905, but fellowship remains an integral part of our Rotary experience. As such, it is critical that we provide a welcoming environment to members and visitors to our clubs. As we all know, membership is a big challenge for many organizations, and Rotary is no exception. Thanks to all the Rotarians who attended the Membership Summit in Cheyenne last weekend. Our energetic attendees discussed different ways to recruit and retain members and were led by Membership Cadre members from our Zone. The attendees discussed new ways to tell our Rotary stories, reviewed membership statistics, and talked about effective retention strategies. Rotarians left the summit excited about membership and eager to share what they learned with their clubs. Membership Chair, Nancy Hobbs, is planning one more summit in the...we SHOULD REMEMBER, THAT AS ROTARIANS, WE ALSO BELONG TO A TRULY INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION. western part of our district, so keep an eye out for that event. While it is always important to focus on membership in our own clubs, we should remember that as Rotarians we also belong to a truly international organization. February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month when Rotary celebrates its commitment to building peace and mitigate conflict. Through service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, Rotarians, and their partners are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict and providing projects to respond to those affected by conflict. Each year Rotary selects up to 100 professionals from around the world to receive fellowships to study at one of Rotary s peace cen- See REDDER on page 9 Join DG Barb Redder in Atlanta for the 2017 Rotary International Convention! ROTARY DISTRICT 5440 ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a leadership development program for all Rotarians. RLI believes that excellent club leadership (all types of club leaders) is essential to the future of Rotary in a complex and fast changing world. Most Rotarians have not been exposed to the great scope of Rotary around the world and the leadership opportunities available to move Rotary forward. Learn about the evolution of Rotary and its activities in the world. Discover leadership strategies for your club, work, or other volunteer activities by participating in interactive discussion. Fulfill one of the key purposes of Rotary by networking with other Rotarians There are many opportunities to complete the Rotary Leadership Institute in 2016 2017 (required to earn the Governor s citation!): February 10 11, Fort Collins, CO March 24 25, Casper, WY April 7 8, Fort Collins, CO April 7 8, Lander, WY A Friday (5-8:30 p.m.) and Saturday (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.) is all it takes to complete RLI! Cheyenne Sunrise Rotary: Building partnerships, building community Photo courtesy of the Cheyenne Sunrise Rotary Club Among other community service projects, members of the Cheyenne Sunrise Rotary Club volunteered to Ring The Bell for one entire day and raised $1,200 for the Salvation Army. Wait a minute. why haven t we heard from the Cheyenne Sunrise Rotary Club lately? What are they up to you might ask? Our journey this year is partnering with the Cheyenne community. As a small club it isn t always feasible to host all of our own events so instead we have partnered with other community organizations to make a bigger difference. Our partnering has led us to make new friends, learn more about the community and engage members who haven t normally joined in, a win win all the way around. A few things we have done: Cheyenne s Farmer Market Produce for Vet s project. Collected left over vegetables after the market to take to the local VA Hospital where Vet s can pick up fresh vegetables for free. Flu Shots for a Healthy Community One member (Doc) donates his time and his nurse s time to give shots at our club meeting and we partner with other businesses in town to keep their staff healthy. The money pays our International Polio Plus commitment, assists with club projects AND we help Cheyenne citizens stay healthy through the winter and flu season. Food Collection The meeting before Thanksgiving we partnered with St. Joseph s Food Pantry and took up a food collection. It was amazing how much we collected from our small club. At Christmas, we spent an entire day ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at our local King Soop- See CHEYENNE on page 9 4 ROTARYDISTRICT 5440 NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2017

Membership Summit a HUGE success... Members from clubs across District 5440 converged on the Campus of Laramie County Community College for a day of intensive membership discussions. Broken into two groups and facilitated by members of the Zone 21b-27 Membership Cadre, participants worked through a number of exercises designed to build membership and increase retention. 8 ROTARYDISTRICT 5440 NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2017

REDDER from page 2 ters. If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in applying to be a Rotary Peace Fellow, more information is available at https:// www.rotary.org/en/our-programs/ peace-fellowships. I also encourage all Rotarians in our district to continue to help their Club President achieve the Presidential, Governor s, and PR citations for your club. In additional to receiving recognition and citations, these goals will help your club be more successful going forward through engaging members, increasing Rotary Foundation contributions, developing leaders, working with youth and humanitarian service. All of this helps us be an integral part of Rotary Serving Humanity. CHEYENNE from page 4 ers. We raised $1,200.00 that day standing at the kettle caroling, saying Merry Christmas and just enjoying each other s company. Finally, we partnered with the Department of Family Services and sponsored and organized the annual Foster Kid s Dinner. An estimated 200 kids attended with their Foster Parents to enjoy a Christmas meal and receive a gift from Santa. We aren t a big club but we have made a BIG difference the first half of our Rotarian year! Join us in partnering with a local charity and helping with their fundraising efforts. It truly good for all concerned. ROTARYDISTRICT 5440 NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2017 9
