Chinese Culture Days Celebrating the Year of the Monkey Dear friends: Welcome to the 2016 Chinese Culture Days: Preserving 5,000 Years of ealth and Longevity. This year we present traditional signature events in the spirit of Yang Sheng, or Life Nourishing, a practice of fostering health and wellbeing. Chinese culture is composed of many aspects that are holistic in nature, and we hope to share these with you through the festival s programs. Experience ancient wisdom in the modern world in a show called Enchanted China ; explore exciting activities in a traditional Chinese Temple Fair; and enjoy acrobats, healthy cooking demonstrations, traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese square and dragon dancing, children s activities, and much more entertainment for the whole family. Each program introduces its own unique influence on the Chinese practice of health and longevity. I hope you will enjoy the many activities and help us celebrate 5,000 years of Chinese culture at the beautiful Missouri otanical. Sincerely, Chinese F The Margaret Grigg Nanjing Friendship is a private Scholar s, designed as a retreat to escape the distractions of everyday life. Chinese gardens, it is said, are built, not planted. Much of the space is filled with pavilions, bridges, and decorative pavements, reflecting the traditional Chinese shan shui (mountains and water) landscape. Stones symbolize the five sacred mountains in China around a central pool of water. Chinese Temple Fair 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Chinese temple fair is a celebratory event usually held around the Lunar New Year or at the temple of a specific god on the deity s birthday. Traditional activities have included rituals within the temple, opera, processions of carts bearing gods images throughout the villages and cities, and performances of musical and ritual troupes. Visitors flock to these fairs in China to take the opportunity to burn incense and wish for good luck in a new year. Opening Extravaganza, Parade, and Ceremony 11 a.m., Saturday only Spoehrer Plaza to Cohen mphitheater The celebration kicks off with a magnificent Chinese dragon dance at Spoehrer Plaza. The dragon has always been regarded as a sacred creature, symbolizing power, courage, righteousness and dignity. s a sign of ethnic identity, the Chinese refer to themselves as Descendants of the Dragon. Followed by the dragon dance, the Lion Dance Team and Drum Team will perform briefly then lead the visitors to Cohen mphitheater, where the St. Louis Modern Chinese School dance team will perform to formally welcome the visitors. The Opening Ceremony will begin at 11:20 a.m. upon the arrival of the dragon and dignitaries, who will offer brief remarks. New Shanghai Circus noon and 3:30 p.m. Cohen mphitheater Celebrate the exotic wonders of China and enjoy the dramatic interpretation of classic Chinese dance and physical performance art. The New Shanghai Circus is a spectacular extravaganza of elegant dance, dazzling acrobatics, mysterious magic, mystical music, and much more. For more than 40 years, the New Shanghai Circus troupe has worked to perfect the fine Chinese folk art of tumbling into an international award-winning performance involving both artistry and acrobatics. The troupe has toured throughout sia, Europe, the Middle East, and North merica. Grand Parade 2 p.m. Spoehrer Plaza to Cohen mphitheater One of the highlights of the festival, this colorful parade consists of dance teams, acrobats, groups in traditional costumes, martial arts teams, and drummers, along with lion and dragon dancers. Chinese rts & Crafts for Kids 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spink Pavilion D This program is designed for children and the young-at-heart. ave your face painted with the Chinese zodiac, make your own Chinese lantern, try your hand at the shuttlecock-kicking and chopsticks games, and learn the ancient art of Chinese paper folding and cutting. For a nominal charge, you can even have your Chinese name written on your own fan to take home. There is no shortage of fun here! Chinese Square Dance Saturday 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Spoehrer Plaza Slightly different from its merican counterpart, Chinese Square Dance is an exercise routine set to music. It has gained huge popularity in Chinese plazas. Join in with the experts as you learn the popular square dances of the past year, as well as a traditional simple red ribbon dance. New Shanghai Circus noon and 3:30 p.m. Cohen mphitheater Celebrate the exotic wonders of China and enjoy the dramatic interpretation of classic Chinese dance and physical performance art. The New Shanghai Circus is a spectacular extravaganza of elegant dance, dazzling acrobatics, mysterious magic, mystical music, and much more. In this show, numerous aspects of life nourishment will be represented in a variety of traditional Chinese folk, classical, and modern dances, chorus, and other forms. The demonstration unfolds an extraordinary journey of Chinese history by showcasing beautiful Chinese costumes and music as well as authentic Chinese dances from different eras and ethnic groups. Dance with the Dragon! 1 p.m. Central xis Reflecting Pools The most auspicious being in Chinese folklore, the dragon, is a creature of incomparable strength whose 24-legged dance can dispel bad luck and ward off evil. Earliest written records place dragon dancing in the West an Dynasty (206.C. 24.D.) when the dragon danced during a spring drought. The dragon also dances to celebrate the New Year or to open a festival. Visitors are invited to join in and learn the dance! The dragon dance will also be performed at the opening ceremony and the grand parade. E Tai Chi for ealth 2:30 p.m. Cohen mphitheater This is a workshop for everyone! Tai Chi masters will lead the audience through a simple yet profound exercise that is great for your health. No prior experience required, but even experienced Tai Chi practitioners will benefit from this enjoyable program. St. Louis Chinese Language Immersion School Choir 3 p.m. Cohen mphitheater Enjoy singing, dancing and poetry reading from the children of the Chinese Language Immersion School, a Charter School in the city of St. Louis. These local students have worked hard to master the Chinese language and are sure to delight! This popular and entertaining one-hour demonstration will educate you about the correct techniques in preparing tea, the correct temperature of the water, the kind of tea wares to use, and the benefits of tea over other popular drinks.
