Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter Happy New Year, Hello, CDC members! With 2017 now behind us, I would like to recognize the board members who have helped run this organization for the past year, working hard to make changes to benefit the Club. They are Ben Davis, Diane Rice, Carol Kussmann, Aina Clayton, Susie Stewart, Rhoda Israelov and Rudy (Ruthann) Osenbaugh. I have received some positive comments expressing what a fine job I am doing and I will tell you - It s not me, it s US. We are all doing what we think will keep our dance floor hopping, and with the help of our many volunteers, we hope we are on the right track. It is my pleasure to welcome our two newest board members - Nancy Lutz and Tanya Marshall. We are very pleased and excited to get started with 2018 and are hopeful these two board newbies will bring some new ideas and excitement to the Club. I would like to thank Diane Rice and Carol Kussmann for their time and effort these past six years. They have each fulfilled their maximum terms on the board and they will be missed. I am sure they have seen quite a few changes in their time and we hope they see a lot more positive changes in the future. Holy Cow! Did someone say change? Just a few months ago, we decided to offer a student rate of $5.00 with proper I.D. Now we are taking that a couple of steps further. Change #1 Junior rates - Any person 25 years old and under, student or not, can come dance with us for only $5.00 with proper I.D. Change #2 Junior memberships - Active members who are 26 and older, up until their 30th birthdays can also dance with us for only $5.00. Change #3 Dancers of any age who have attended another dance activity earlier that Sunday may, upon presenting proof of purchase of admission to that earlier dance,, finish their evening by attending our dance for just $5.00. As always with paid admission, if anyone would like to take the advanced lesson they can pay $5.00 or take the free lesson in the small ballroom. Continued on page 7 January 21 Fiesta party Ole! We'll be south of the border for a hot time on the dance floor. Bring snacks. page 2

Dance Instruction January From our Dance Instructor Chairman Ben Davis Our professional dance instructor for January is Olga Cansino who will teach Viennese Waltz. Olga began studying ballroom dancing at the age of 17 at the prestigious Moscow State University in Russia and she began teaching dance lessons at the age of 20. She became a co-founder of Dance Factor Club in 2011. She currently teaches group and private ballroom dance lessons for beginning and intermediate levels, for both children and adults. Olga specializes in both American and International style social dancing and in Formation dancing. The beginner lesson will cover the American Smooth dances in the small ballroom. We thank our last month s professional instructor Eric Byers who taught West Coast Swing. We also thank our member volunteers, who taught our beginner dancers Five American Rhythm Dances. Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning some new dance steps. Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. Please, no video recording of the lesson without permission of the instructor. Seeking Roommate I am a single retired gentleman interested in finding a roommate to share my 3-bedroom home. Since I will be gone some of the time, I need a responsible person to take care of some household duties in my absence. Roommate will have total use of one bedroom and will share common areas such as the kitchen, dining room, living room, decks and hot tub. U-verse TV and wifi is included. Off-street parking is close to house. This person must be honest, clean, tidy and respectful. References required. No pets. My home is in a very nice area of Washington Township (Indianapolis). Interested persons can call me at 317-979-2349 to discuss further details. Do you own a business? Consider running an ad in our newsletter or talk to a friend who might be interested in running an ad. Our newsletter reaches more than 300 people and the rates are quite reasonable. Substantial savings in monthly rates can be realized by running an ad for six months or a year. Your ad does not need to be copy ready. We will work with you. Please contact Darrel Trexler: at 317-722-0133 or continentaldanceclub@yahoo.com. MY CDC Scot Brown In terms of chronological age, Scot Brown might be one of our club s youngest regular dancers ever. Yet, in terms of sheer accomplishment, you might say this young man leaves many of his elders in the dust. Simultaneously a junior in high school and a sophomore in college, Scot has his sights set on a career related to mechanical engineering. Scot and his two younger brothers are being home schooled by their mother under the aegis of the SPAN remote learning program offered through the Calvert School in Baltimore, Maryland. This (based on an interview with board member Rhoda Israelov) semester, Scot s home study curriculum includes algebra, composition, political science; this is in addition to his college courses, which he attends on the IUPUI campus. The CDC Chapter began when, in order to round out his studies, Scot chose the ballroom dance class taught by Ed Godby-Schwab. In the second week of this semester, together many with of his classmates, Scot visited our Club, and the rest is history (well, history in the making, the making of quite a smooth dancer!) But dancing is not Scot s only hobby. After creating many beautiful pottery pieces in his garage, in the spring of 2016, he began to study the art of wood turning, working with a master craftsman in Noblesville. After exhibiting his work at two Indiana craft shows this year, Scot was the inspiration for our very first CDC craft and trade show fundraiser on December 17th, selling his beautiful wooden pen creations. Notes from the Board continued I hope the year 2018 is a great year for us as a Club, as well as for all our dancing friends everywhere. It is in our best interest to make everyone happy and feel right at home. (I know an ongoing issue is a shortage of men If I thought I could get by with it, I would put up a billboard in front of the Starlite, announcing Men wanted to make our ladies happy (dancing, that is). In return, our ladies will make you look really good, the sign would add. Of course, I am sure someone would twist things around and I would end up on the impeachment list.) As we begin this new year together, let s all remember: Exercise is good for the body. Dancing is exercise. Why, it s a no-brainer! Thanks for all you do Your President, DAVE Holiday Fun at the CDC page 7
