COACH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM PEE WEE AND BANTAM C HOCKEY

COACH MENTORSHIP This booklet is to provide valuable information for a successful minor hockey season. It is for you as a coach to review, utilize, and share with your coaching staff. The drills contained are a guideline which can be modified, or changed as you see fit for your team. They will enhance your teams understanding of hockey and how to play the game. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this manual please do not hesitate to contact Craig Sherbaty. This is to be used in conjunction with the Hockey Canada Nike Skills Manual. TEAM POLICIES General Common sense, respect and responsibility are to be demonstrated to all coaches, teammates, parents oppositions, referees, by all coaches, players and parents of our minor hockey association. No profanity directed at parents, opposition, referees, or coaches will be tolerated. The coaches will be available to the parents/ players for interactions prior to games unless an appointment has been previously arranged. Parents are requested not to confront coaches directly before, during, or after games. To respect the 24 hour rule regarding issues that may arise. Games Players and parents are to arrive at games at the time set at the beginning of the year. Coaches must make consideration for travel time, and location of games. Players must be fully dressed and ready to go 15 minutes prior to game time. Dress code will be agreed upon during the initial parent/coach meeting and must be followed. Players must bring there own water bottles. Supervision of players in the dressing room at all times. Dressing rooms are to be tidied after the game (garbage in the garbage). Practices Players are to try and arrive at the rink 30 minutes prior to the start time. Players must be fully dressed 15 minutes prior to the start time. All players must wear full safety gear with neck guards. Dressing rooms are to be tidied after use (garbage in the garbage). All safety equipment must remain on at all times.

Off Ice Activities Any time you can get your team off ice is a great opportunity for team building. This must be ratified at the first meeting of the season and agreed upon. In addition you will need a special events form. All players are to attend off-ice functions unless prior arrangements have been made. These should be fun, fun, fun. Work fundamentals like passing shooting puck control, game concepts and team work. Dry land Having players work on specific needs is important. That said consult a professional. There are many safety factors that must be considered. Doing it on your own can lead to inappropriate training and can actually work against what you are trying to achieve. Absences All parents and players must inform the coaches / managers of absences as soon as possible. No Shows are not acceptable and are to be disciplined. All ice times are mandatory. Notify your coaches immediately of any medical concerns or injuries. Doctor s notes are mandatory for all absences that required medical attention. DISCIPLINE POLICIES THE FOLLOWING DISCIPLINE POLICIES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY THE ASSOCIATION AND CAN BE ENFORCED BY THE COACHING STAFF. First infraction- a verbal warning from the team staff Second infraction- miss 5 minutes of ice time on next game attended. Third infraction- miss one period of ice time on next game attended, as well as notify the executive. Fourth infraction- meeting with executive to discuss further discipline. Situations that will be considered breaches of the team policies or code of conduct are the rules that are outlined in the team policies and the team rules as set at the beginning of the year. To be specific these are: Missing a team function without notice. Being late for games or practices. No show without communication. Parent/ player misconduct.

On- ice misconduct of players: The age that these players are must be a consideration when coaching and making decisions of discipline. The following are guidelines: Unsportsmanlike play- misses one rotation of shift, explain the infraction and give suggestion for improvement. Fighting- miss 5 minutes of ice, explain the infraction and give direction for improvement. Overaggressive play or body checking- one rotation of shifts and give direction for improvement. With all discipline respect responsibility and an understanding of consideration must be used under all circumstances. COMMUNICATE WITH THE PARENTS. Contact your executive if you have questions or concerns. COACHING PEE WEE AND BANTAM C The main goal is to make the impression of hockey a good one! When players get started on a positive note they automatically enjoy the game more and usually go on to have fun playing hockey for many years. Understand that players play hockey because it is fun, mom or dad plays, sibling plays. We need to continue to develop fundamental skills, incorporate players into positions, understanding of playing in a system, and the love of the game at this level. BC Hockey Coaching Certification You are required to obtain your hybrid coach level for C level. You are required to obtain the Developmental 1 level for Rep level..you register on-line at www.bchockey.net You are also required to obtain the Respect in Sport on-line course. Please contact the risk manager if you have questions. Players are to receive equal opportunity to learn and play. Utilize all your resources. This includes associate coaches, coach mentoring and hockey specific drill and tactic books. This will enhance your ability to produce a well structured season plan which will ultimately benefit the development of all players. If you have any questions or for assistance contact me directly.

PRACTICE STRUCTURE Practices should always be planned with the Hockey Canada Skills Pyramid in mind. Understand that players of this level will develop quicker with easy step by step instruction with continuous revisiting of the fundamental technical skills and introduce individual tactics. Technical skills should contain 50% of your practices with the remaining 50% being individual and team tactics, and team play/ strategies. And always remember fun. Some of the best practices involved keeping the kids active! Utilize stations to maximize ice times and teach multiple skills and concepts. These also allow for more one-on-one time with coaches and more repetitions of the skills. In order to save ice time consider showing the drills to the players prior to the ice sessions. The usage of different objects on the ice to use as teaching tools is encouraged. For example tennis balls for stick handling, markers or spray paint if allowed by your local arena assists the player to understand your directions and adds the element of interest. Communication to players from coaching staff should be consistent and easy to understand for the players you are coaching. Feedback should be immediate and positive. Providing this for your players allows for error correction which is immediate. TEACHING SKILLS IS AS EASY AS 1-2-3-4: 1. Explain the skill: Have a name for the skills and describe it to the players. Explain why it is important and when and how to use it in a game. Highlight the key execution points. 2. Show how it is done: Make sure that players are situated where they can have a clear view of the demonstration. Show it correctly again stating the key points, and then show one or two of the most common mistakes that are made. 3. Allow ample time to practice the skill: Get the players to practice right away, repeating and correcting as you go. Utilize your assistant coaches by giving them specific areas to watch and correct. 4. Give feedback as to how they are doing. Make mental notes as to when you would like to revisit at a later practice.

CHECKLIST FOR PRACTICES: There is a complete list of things to consider for a practice. They are in the front of every Nike Skills Manual. I have listed the most important. Did you set goals for the practice? Did you keep all players active including goalies? Are your drills suitable for the age group? Do you inform and utilize your assistant coaches? Do you emphasize fun? Did I take advantage of the coaching moment? This is the time you have with your players. SAFETY CONCERNS Some things to keep in consideration are you must have an Emergency Action Plan. Please see the example in your Nike Skills Manual. It is important to always think of the safety of all your players and personnel. There are some very important steps that can be taken to ensure safe play and practice. No horse play in and around the dressing room. Players are to be seated after skates are put on. Full safety equipment is to be worn at all times on the ice. Direct one coach to be in charge of the dressing room to ensure safety. Inspect and report any and all safety concerns with rink or ice conditions immediately. FAIR PLAY CODE FOR PLAYERS AND COACHES Coaches are to enforce and review the Fair Play Code which is located in your Nike skills manual and understand the concept of Fair play as set out in those guidelines. The player development of each player within our association will depend on our coaches coaching under these guidelines. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Every experienced coach will tell you there are no secrets in hockey. We want to create a network of information getting to and from our coaches. To initiate this program you will be expected to email the coach coordinator / head coach with questions or comments. We will be hosting coach s events in season which are mandatory for you to attend. This will be an opportunity to share ideas, have some presentations and answer any questions you may have regarding your season.
