The 1st Korean Ambassador s Cup
Greetings September 20, 2014 Dear Taekwondo Brothers and Sisters: It is a great honor for me to serve as the tournament president of the 1 ST Korean Ambassador s Cup KORUS Taekwondo Championship, scheduled on September 20, 2014, at the Washington Convention Center in North West Washington DC. The event will begin at 10:00 AM. I look forward to seeing you all. I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to share some philosophical points of Taekwondo. When I first became a Taekwondo instructor, I claimed that martial art is a philosophy which can be very instrumental in developing our youth through mental discipline and physical conditioning. However, I had a difficult time justifying how punching and kicking could be a philosophy. In the early 1970s, I was writing a column for Black Belt magazine. The editor called on me to write an article explaining Taekwondo as a philosophy. At first, I was having trouble trying to explain this. During three months of research, I was able to develop the article, Seven Qualities of a Champion, which has become well known among martial artists of all styles. The article explains how punching and kicking can be a philosophy. There are seven physical qualities such as power, speed, timing, patience, balance, flexibility, and posture developed before one can becomes a taekwondo champion. By the same token, there are corresponding seven human qualities of a human champion, such as knowledge in place of power, quick thinking in place of speed, punctuality in place of timing, sense of perseverance in place of endurance, balancing body, character, and mind in place of physical balance, kindness in place of flexibility, mental posture in place of physical posture. This is how Taekwondo can be described as a philosophy. I hope all Taekwondo students will show good sportsmanship and sincerely hope everybody is careful throughout the day. I hope everybody will do their best to his or her ability to become a champion in life and taekwondo. I want everyone to know you can become anything you want to be, but only if you want, because you all were born a genius. A genius is made by one percent inspiration and 99 Percent perspiration. Thomas Edison Sincerely Yours, Tournament President. Grand Master Jhoon Rhee
Greetings September 20, 2014 Dear Grandmasters, Masters, and Instructors, I am pleased to organize the 1 st Ambassadors Cup. The biennial championship will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014, from 10 AM to 8 PM at the D.C. Convention Center Event Hall (801 Mount Vernon Place NW, Washington DC 20001). The 1 st Ambassadors Cup KORUS Tae Kwon Do Championship was created to practice good sportsmanship and to strengthen relationships between Tae Kwon Do students and their families as well as relations between Korea and the United States. Furthermore, we believe that the spirit of the competition will help favorably shape the future of children who may not otherwise have positive influences in their lives. We hope that the championship will provide participants with both understanding for competing and learning as well as motivation to use the physical and mental abilities they have learned through Tae Kwon Do to contribute back to society. Participation of students from other schools helps everyone to improve beyond everyday class situations and gives everyone a unique opportunity to express themselves to others. Although we compete together, we also come together in a spirit of helping each other to grow physically, mentally, and morally through participation in this kind of championship. To practice good sportsmanship, all decisions will be final and no arguing with officials will be tolerated at this championship. Let s all work together to encourage our students improvement and promote the Tae Kwon Do spirit with each other as well as with the community. Sincerely, Tournament Chairman. Grand Master Koang Woong Kim
