2 Philosophy of Tae Kwon Do The literal translation of Tae Kwon Do is "the way of the fist and foot," (Tae means "Foot," Kwon means "Fist," and Do means "the way"), but there is much more to Tae Kwon Do than what its name implies. Do refers to a philosophical approach to life, a means to achieve harmony with nature, others, and personal contentment. Students of Tae Kwon Do work hard to improve through intense physical and mental training their art becomes a way of life and means for personal growth. At the center of Tae Kwon Do philosophy is the concept of balance between opposing forces in nature (Um vs. Yang). Balance can only be achieved when opposite forces are distributed in equal amounts. Too much time spent working or thinking about work can lead to harmful physical, mental, and relationship effects. Work balanced with leisure time with family, exercise, and personal advancement leads to a more harmonious and productive life. Tae Kwon Do practice is a means for individuals and families to build relationships, healthy minds, healthy bodies, and to create a well of strength and character to draw from when the stresses of life demand our attentions. Tae Kwon Do also teaches the importance of responsibility and honesty as the means to achieve harmony with society and to improve society. Well practiced Tae Kwon Do students know how to behave in any place and at any time in trustworthy and sincere manners. These are the kind of people with which Tae Kwon Do is most associated. Humility is a quality all serious Tae Kwon Do students possess. Practicing the art of Tae Kwon Do in traditional family-oriented studios like Kim Studio boosts selfconfidence but does not foster false senses of superiority. Good practitioners are humble and considerate. Respect can never be over-stressed because it maintains healthy relationships. If the student does not respect his/her instructor or other students, he/she will never become worthy of the instructor s or fellow students trusts, and therefore his/her presence in the Dojang will not be welcomed. Also, respect is expected from all students toward their parents, nation, communities, and, in general, toward all human beings. In the same way, the highest regards for morality and ethics are fostered in the studio and encouraged beyond the dojang doors. Tae Kwon Do is much more than kicking and punching, and is certainly a much more beneficial force than what has been conveyed in popular culture. Balance, humility, and respect are important teachings for all who practice Tae Kwon Do. Here at Kim Studio, you will find a traditional family-centered approach to Tae Kwon Do striving to improve ourselves and communities one person at a time. Revised 7/12 New Student Materials 2
