2002-03 IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament Series State Finals Summary Pike, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, Cass and Lafayette Central Catholic successfully navigated their respective tournament trails and won state championships during the 93 rd Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Finals on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. In winning, Cass and Pike endured their entire seasons without a loss and became just the seventh and eighth schools in state history to do so. This year s tournament drew 384 schools and 5,397 student-athletes. Class 4A Pike Completes Perfect Season Top-ranked Pike held off a valiant effort by DeKalb, winning the Class 4A state championship game, 65-52. Pike remained undefeated, joining seven other teams to complete that task, including Cass who won the Class 2A state championship earlier in the day. Pike, coached by Larry Bullington, finished 29-0 on the season, while fourth-ranked DeKalb finished with a 26-2 record. The Barons were coached by Cliff Hawkins. Pike and DeKalb played close for the first three quarters though the Red Devils held their largest advantage of nine points at 32-23 with about two minutes remaining before halftime. After closing to within four at halftime at 32-28, DeKalb grabbed the lead midway through the third quarter. After two consecutive DeKalb steals that resulted in points, the Barons enjoyed a pair of one-point leads at 38-37 and 40-39. Pike s decisive blow came on a 13-2 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters. DeKalb drew within six points with 3:23 left in the game, but Pike made 7 of 10 from the free throw stripe down the stretch to secure the victory. Pike claimed its third 4A state championship in the win to go along with crowns in 1998 and 2001. This was the first appearance in a boy s basketball state championship game for DeKalb. DeKalb s Alex Kock led all scorers with 25 points and also added 12 rebounds. Pike was led by Robert Vaden with 21 points. Also contributing for the state champions was Justin Cage with 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Courtney Lee with 15 points. Zach Christlieb scored 10 points in his effort for DeKalb. Alex Kock of DeKalb High School was named winner of the Class 4A 2003 Boys Basketball Tournament Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude. Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee present the award to the outstanding senior participant in each classification of the boys basketball state finals. The recipients of this award, who were nominated by their principals and coaches, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in basketball. Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to DeKalb High School in the name of Alex Kock. Class 3A Bishop Chatard Rolls To State Championship Second-ranked Indianapolis Bishop Chatard came up with big games by three players on route to capturing their first boys basketball state championship over Fort Wayne Elmhurst, 78-44, in Class 3A. Chatard, coached by Dan Archer, finished 22-2 on the season, while unranked Elmhurst, in the state finals for the first time in any sport in school history, finished with a 22-6 record. Elmhurst was coached by Keith Edmonds. Bishop Chatard took command of the game during a 7-0 run in the first quarter, breaking Elmhurst s press. In addition to that first quarter streak, Chatard went on two other major runs in the game, 9-0 in the second, and 12-0 in the third. The presence of Dan Cage and Mike Dury plugged up the middle, forcing Elmhurst to rely on perimeter shooting much of the game. Chatard also was making its initial appearance in the boys basketball state finals. But it was the first time the Trojans had captured an IHSAA championship in a sport other than football. Seven players from last November s Class 3A football champs were on this team s roster helping the Trojans become just the second school to win a football and basketball title in the same school year joining Lafayette Central Catholic in 1999-00. Bishop Chatard finished the season on a 10-game win streak, while Elmhurst s nine game streak ended following last week s semistate upset of top-ranked Gary Roosevelt. Bishop Chatard had four players in double digit scoring. Mike Dury led Chatard with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Dan Cage added 17 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists for the champions. Ryan Baker scored 16 points and Jamaal Wade had 11. Leading Elmhurst was James Hardy with 14 points, eight points below his average. He also pulled down 10 rebounds. Joseph Poindexter added 11 points for Elmhurst. Michael Dury of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard was named winner of the 2003 Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude in Class 3A Boys Basketball. For only the second time in IHSAA history, Mike became a dual mental attitude award winner, having also captured the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award for 3A football this past season. He joins Sherry Hoover of Woodlan, who won the honors in cross country and track and field during the 1984 85 season. Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to Indianapolis Bishop Chatard High School in the name of Michael Dury.

Class 2A Cass Goes Undefeated, Wins First State Championship In School History Top-ranked Cass became the seventh undefeated state champion, continuing their excellent play as they defeated Forest Park 57-48 in the Class 2A state championship game. The win gave Cass its first state championship in school history. Cass, coached by Hall of Famer Basil Mawbey, finished the season at 26-0 and won the first state championship in school history. Mawbey won his second state championship after leading Connersville to the 1983 crown and became the first to coach to take three different schools to a state championship game. He led Kokomo to the runner-up finish in 1989. Cass only committed five turnovers as their patient offense proved too strong for Forest Park to overcome. The Kings grabbed the lead for good just two minutes into the contest and led at every stop. The most spectacular play of the game came at the end of the first quarter when Forest Park s Adam Brames hit a three-pointer from approximately 63 feet to draw the Rangers to within 19-15. Forest Park drew within six points on a pair of occasions in the fourth period, but any thoughts of a rally were squelched as Cass hit its free throws on consecutive trips down the floor to balloon the lead back to 10 points at 48-38 with 3:24 remaining. Cass Beau Bauer led the game with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. Also contributing for Cass was Zach Frey who had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Forest Park was led by Brames with 12 points, and Neal Knies with 11 points. Luke Rohleder pulled down 10 rebounds for Forest Park, five on the offensive end. Eighth-ranked Forest Park finished a great season at 23-5 under head coach Ted Beach. Beau Bauer of Lewis Cass High School was named winner of the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude in Class 2A Boys Basketball. Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to Lewis Cass High School in the name of Beau Bauer. Class A Central Catholic s Rally Puts Knights Over The Top Unranked Lafayette Central Catholic came up with a third quarter rally that got it back in the game and the Knights went on to capture their third state title holding off Southwestern (Shelbyville), 68-64, in the Class A state championship contest. Central Catholic went on a 15-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to take the lead 57-54. Southwestern went scoreless for a span of 6:26 during that time scoring their first bucket of the fourth quarter with just 3:26 to play knotting the score at 57-57. In the final minute of play, Lafayette Central Catholic s Alex Loepker hit four key free throws to seal the game for the Knights. Southwestern, making its first appearance in a state championship game, had started started the game quickly scoring the game s first five points and led for the entire first half including 39-27 at the break. Southwestern s Ryan Rooks scored 31 points, giving him the fourth highest scoring output in a Class A State Championship game. Andy Hancock added 13. Kristof Kendrick led the Knights with 24, with Loepker scoring 21. The Knights finished 18-9 on the year and were coached by Chad Dunwoody to their third state championship in the past six years (1998 and 2000) to go along with a runner-up finish in 1999. Dunwoody now joins six other coaches with three or more titles to their credit. Seventh-ranked Southwestern finished with a 22-5 record this season. The Spartans were coached by Stacy Meyer. Derrick Smith of Southwestern (Shelbyville) High School was named winner of the 2003 Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude in Class A Boys Basketball. Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to Southwestern (Shelbyville) High School in the name of Derrick Smith.
