( Official newsletter of the BlackJack Club) May, 2017 #77cwc SAM CLIPPER Society of Antique Modelers Chapter 21 AMA Charter Club 1470 The above graphic pretty much describes what happened to the Clash of the Titans II event at the Livermore Flying Electrons field in Livermore on May 6th Early arrivals were treated to what seemed to be a perfect day for the event with bright sunshine and a dead calm wind component. As contestants filtered in they immediately began unpacking and assembling their items of combat and started to talk about te st flights Oh Boy! The event was scheduled to start at 9:00 at about which time, much to everyone's dismay, the wind went from zero to a gusty 10 to 15 mph NW gale in an instant, which threatened to damage everything lighter than a field box that wasn t tied down. Those who were familiar with the field knew right away that generally when the wind comes up at that velocity and direction, Old Timer flight is done for the day. After observing an acceptable period of optimism, a meeting of the group of about 15 SAM followers met and agreed that the wind was unfavorable for a reasonable event to be held and that an acceptable alternate postponed event should be scheduled for Fall Old Timer date of September 23rd that is already on the LFE event schedule (which should give me time to finish the Dr. Joe and Bill C San Jose)... in this issue: P.2 2017 SAM WESTERN REGIONAL EVENT CALENDAR P.3 APRIL MINUTES AND MAY AGENDA P.4 FROM THE RIGHT SEAT / FROM THE APRIL MEETING P.5 SAM 21 SPRING SPEED 400 / 1/2A CONTEST RESULTS P.6 SAM 21/30 FUN FLY FLYER P.7 THE 41ST LOREN SCHMIDT ANNUAL CONTEST FLYER P.8 SAM 21 CONTACT LIST - 2017 MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION Next Meeting: Thursday, May 25 th, 7:00 pm SARATOGA FIRE DEPARTMENT (Corner Saratoga Ave & Sunnyvale-Saratoga Hwy) The April Meeting Social Assignments are: Goodies (Gary Leopold) Coffee: (Brian Sargent) See Page 2 For Annual Goodie Schedule The CLIPPER - official newsletter of SAM 21 May, 2017 Page

...From The April Meeting The Balsa Butchers - Jeff and Bill Presenting the latest product of the Livermore S-21 s Livermore branch, a tool that the serious builder should not be without... Based on a similar design that had gone out of production several years ago, the updated model produces uniform stick balsa from sheets 1/32 in to 0.50 in thick and strips from 1/32in to 1/2 wide, with a minimum of effort and a maximum of repeatable accuracy. The base and slider are laser cut from cabinet finish grade 15 ply promising a stable base for long term use The Balsa Butchers have units in stock and provide Free Delivery. Cost, including tax $60. To order call Jeff at: 9 N o t e s F r o m T h e R i g h t S e a t Greetings: As you no doubt know by this time, the Clash of the Titans II was cancelled by the wind. As usual there is an upside to every dilemma if you only look for it. In this case having to reschedule the event will make it possible for two of the four qualified contenders to have another try at the competition. John Eaton found that he could not attend due to a reconstruction scheduled at the Woodland/Davis flying field. The extensive rain and a rare very strong wind storm had allowed their mat runway to be blown away and John s attendance at their field was critical to the success of the project. Also, our own Jeff Davies managed to substantially damage his ultra light Boxcar and did not have time for repairs, so he was out (Jeff has managed to rebuild the Boxcar, but says it s not as light as it was originally awww) So, hopefully John and Jeff will be on the starting grid for the rescheduled Clash of the Titans II, double header on September 23rd at the Livermore Flying Electrons field.. In the mean time, S-21 members have a busy event schedule for those who fly. Check out the event flyers on pages 6 and 7 where you will find all the information you need to enjoy both events Technical Sergeant Chris Skibo talked about his Air Force career. He began by filling out a Dream sheet of where he wanted to go in the world - and ended in Oklahoma. He started with E-3 AWACS at Tinker AFB then served in the OK National Guard and Air Force reserve before transferring to Moffett Field AFB where he served from 2005 to 2016. He related several; captivating stories, including one about rescue missions in Texas after a large hurricane, which included some air to air refueling with helicopters and search and rescue. Thank you Chris for your talk and thank you for your service... Last month I sort of praised SAM Speaks for being pro active by posting issues on line to be downloaded upon publishing a very nice feature. At the same time I hinted that the download feature was giving me fits. Turns out the fits were my fault. I had failed to renew my membership??? I discovered this blunder thanks to the SAM staff. Once I paid up downloading was rather simple. I was particularly interested in the current issue as I had submitted an article on the status of the ALOT event at the SAM Champs coming up in October. Sure enough, there it was just as I had submitted it. Thank you SAM staff......that s all for this time... AMA 27944...Over and Out The CLIPPER - official newsletter of SAM 21 May, 2017 Page 4

2017 SAM Champs To Feature A.L.O.T. Event Breaking News: In case you were wondering what happened to the concept of including an Altitude Limited Old Timer event at the SAM Champs as a Special Event, wonder no more as progress is being made by the 2017 organizing committee to implement the approved Special event which will be held on Friday October 27th at the 2017 SAM Champs. Coordinating SAM Chapter representatives, Bill Copeland, SAM 21, (Tele: 925-321-1552 or: bnbent!@pacbell.net) and Bob Angel, SAM 26,(Tele: 805-937-5145 or: samrcflier@verizon.net) has recruited at least two SAM members (Brian Sargent, (Tele: 408-656-3662 or: b.h.sargent@gmail.com) and Brian Dethier (Tele: 925-373-6833 or: bdethier@comcast.net) to be on the site to manage event activities and help with any technical issues. Call the above if you need more information. The Event: ALOT (Altitude Limited Old Timer) is a special event with provisional rules for SAM legal, gas powered designs equipped with an electronic altitude limiter linked to the RC power shutoff. Participants may preset their onboard altitude limiter units to a maximum 700 feet and 180 seconds prior to the event. The sponsors will have extra units available at the field. Total the best three of four 10 minute max flights for score. Tied scores will be offered a fly off opportunity with no flight time limit. Photo ops will be determined and scheduled at the participants briefing. Potential participants are encouraged to bring at least two aileron servo extensions to facilitate installation of the cut off device, The Rules (tentative):(subject to revision not later than 60 days prior to event date. Registered entrants will be advised by E-mail 1. Scaling is allowed. 3. Any electric motor or SAM legal engine may be used. 4. All models will use a cutoff device which will be either programmed or have programming verified by contest management prior to first flight. Maximum altitude cutoff limit is 700ft. or 213M. 5. A time limit of 3 minutes to gain cutoff altitude will be imposed to prevent excess thermal hunting during climb and to move the contest along. Flight time commences at model release. Breaking News: 2017 SAM Champs To Feature A.L.O.T. Event In case you were wondering what happened to the concept of including an Altitude Limited Old Timer (ALOT) event at the SAM Champs as a Special Event, wonder no more as progress is being made by the 2017 sponsors to implement the approved Special event which will be held on Friday only, October 27th at the 2017 SAM Champs. ALOT is one of the most popular events, year after year, at the European Champs and we are hoping to find the same interest here, ultimately leading to it s adoption as an Official event at the U.S Champs going forward... ALOT (Altitude Limited Old Timer) is a special event with provisional rules for SAM legal, gas powered designs equipped with an electronic altitude limiter linked to the RC power shutoff. Participants may preset their onboard altitude limiter units to a maximum 700 feet and 180 seconds prior to the event. The sponsors will have extra units available at the field. Total of the best three of four 10 minute max flights for score. Tied scores will be offered a fly off opportunity with no flight time limit. Photo ops will be determined and scheduled at the participants briefing. Potential participants are encouraged to bring at least two aileron servo extensions to facilitate installation of the cut off device, Ideally participants should have the cut off device installed in advance and provide access to allow verification of current setting before any official flight is attempted. Sponsoring SAM Chapter representatives, Bill Copeland, SAM 21, (Tele: 925-321-1552 or: bnbent@pacbell.net) and Bob Angel, SAM 26,(Tele: 805-937-5145 or: samrcflier@verizon.net) have recruited at least two SAM members (Brian Sargent, (Tele: 408-656-3662 or: b.h.sargent@gmail.com) and Brian Dethier (Tele: 925-373- 6833 or: bdethier@comcast.net) to be on the site to manage event activities and help with any technical issues. Call or Email any the above if you need more information. Note: The following classes of models will not be eligible to compete in the ALOT event: 1/2 A Texaco; 1/2AScale Duration; Nostalgia (after 1950); Old Time Glider; Electric Wakefield; Speed 400 Scale (except Peerless Cub, et.al.); Electric Spirit of SAM Recognizing the current strong trend of SAM participation toward electric power, this event is the most user friendly by design, hoping to attract current as well as new builders and fliers to a more relaxed and simpler way of enjoying the SAM heritage. ALOT reduces rules to a minimum, while at the same time leveling the competitive playing field (as everyone starts at the same altitude regardless of how he/she gets there) and emphasizing flying skill. The event also has the unique character of allowing the continuing use of almost all SAM legal models through the option of converting literally hundreds of existing ignition or glo powered models to electric power and does nothing to impinge upon those modelers who wish to compete in existing SAM events. In fact, ALOT provides such modelers the opportunity to develop a new skill event to sharpen their competitive edge. Ver.3 The CLIPPER - official newsletter of SAM 21 May, 2017 Page 16
