SEPARATE FROM DISTRICT ENTRIES As you may know, last April the Bastrop County Bar Association presented a play based on Orange Wicks, a man born into slavery in Colorado County. Nineteen years later, slavery was abolished and Mr. Wicks moved to Bastrop County. Somehow, he had learned to read and write and as a free man, he became a school teacher and entered politics, becoming one of the three first ever African Americans elected to a Bastrop County office. The year was 1888. Mr. Wicks' died in 1943 and until now his grave at Fairview Cemetery has been unmarked. From part of the proceeds of the Bar Association's play, a tombstone for Judge Wicks' and his wife Anna's grave was commissioned and it has now been installed. I have attached a flyer about Judge Wicks and the ceremony. On November 12 (Sunday) at 3:00 p.m. the Bar Association will have a dedication ceremony at Fairview at the gravesite. We would be honored if you could attend and help us pay tribute to a remarkable man and historic figure.
