IBC Chairman s Message The future s bright, the future s a Bluefaced Leicester As sheep farmers we are currently faced by a perfect storm this year. Intense supermarket competition, food deflation, a very strong pound affecting exports, changes to SFP and overall commodity price volatility are all factors putting more financial pressure on sheep farmers. But through all that this year the Bluefaced Leicester breed can still break and make records, so it s true to say Diversity is our Breed Strength. In a recent publication it quoted:- Richard Thomas Expect another two billion people in the next 40 years. In the Western World life expectancy is increasing by two years per decade, or half of those born this year will live to be 100 years old. It also means a city the size of Birmingham needs building every three and a half weeks. That is a lot more mouths to feed. Land available for food production has decreased by a third over the last 40 years with the greatest threats now coming from biofuels, so that over the next 40 years we will need to produce the equivalent amount of food the world has produced over the last two and a half centuries. As ram breeders, we more than most need to assess the future of the UK sheep industry, and as the Bluefaced Leicester is the sire of the unprecedented commercial ewe The Mule which is still the greatest producer of prime lambs from grass throughout the UK. We still need to foresee the changes ahead and breed what The Future Market requires. The market place is full of opportunities these opportunities will be harvested by the energetic, the imaginative, the persuasive, the creative and from the power of knowledge the Bluefaced Leicester has all these credentials. The future s bright, the future s a BLUEFACED LEICESTER Front Cover - Breed Record Priced Ram - 34,000 (Kirkby Redgate H1) - bred and sold by W M Hutchinson & Sons at this year s Hawes sale. NSA Events 2015 The Association has been well represented around the British Isles again this year with display stands at Welsh Sheep, North Sheep, Highland Sheep, and Sheep South West. I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who has helped with all of these one day specialist events, providing sheep for the stands and helping out with building of the stands. Shows 2015 The Association were in attendance with their display stands at The Balmoral Show, The Royal Highland Show, The Great Yorkshire Show and The Royal Welsh Show. All these shows provided excellent classes of Bluefaced Leicesters again this year and many congratulations to all winners and champions, and to all exhibitors for turning out their sheep to such a high standard. Agri Expo was our final event of the year held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle. Sales 2015 The female sales were held in January at Hawes and Carlisle and these saw catalogued entries of 264 Bluefaced Leicesters going under the hammer with both centres achieving healthy averages. Top price at the Hawes sale was a gimmer hogg from M/s Lord, HEWGILL selling at 5000. The Hawes Champion was awarded to a gimmer hogg again from M/s Lord, HEWGILL selling at 3000. Top price at Carlisle was shared this year by two gimmer hoggs one from the KIRKBY REDGATE flock of W M Hutchinson & Sons, and the other one was from the PENHILL flock from M/s C T Willoughby & Sons both achieving 4800 guineas. The Carlisle overall Champion went to a gimmer hogg from the HEWGILL flock from M/s Lord. 4

The ram sales in the backend brought a new breed record for a Bluefaced Leicester. This was for a ram lamb from the KIRKBY REDGATE flock of W M Hutchinson & Sons selling at the Hawes sale for 34,000 to a syndicate of buyers from MIDLOCK, FIRTH & HAMILDEAN, breaking the previous breed record by 11,000. Mention must also go to the CARRY HOUSE flock of R D Archer & Son, who sold their pen of 12 ram lambs also at the Hawes sale for a record breed average 7,108, and their top price ram lamb equalled the previous breed record of 23,000. Top price for a shearling ram this year was also a new centre record at the Kelso ram sales for a Bluefaced Leicester, and this was brought out by the Wight Family, MIDLOCK selling at 13,500 I would like to thank all members who returned sale entry forms in good time for catalogue preparation again this year. Champion Progeny Group - M James Penrith Progeny Show The Penrith Progeny Show is becoming something of a hit, with numbers ever on the up in the Mule section especially. In the Bluefaced Leicester section, a 2.45 am start proved worthwhile for Michael and Ella James, Duhonw. Fresh from their winning streak at the Royal Welsh, their journey up the M6 proved as equally successful, again taking home the championship tickets. Whereas his G4 Midlock shared with Crow Hall, Shitlington and Clennell took the Male Championship at the Welsh, judge Harry Vickers put him a step up and he took the Overall Championship and Mike s aged ewe, reserve at the Welsh went to take Female and Reserve Overall back again at Penrith after winning the female championship in 2010. She also formed part of the group which went on to take the Progeny Championship, with a trio of ewes by A5 Old Hemley and co-incidentally out of ewes by P22 Castle Bolton. These ewes are also great breeders, between them having bred F1 Duhonw Goldenballs, retained for own use by Mike and G2 Duhonw, Reserve Champion at Hawes last year, selling for 4000. Mike s success didn t end there either, he took both the Reserves in the Championship sections too. The Reserve Male was a tup shared Report and photos by Wayne Hutchinson with Tom Jones (No, not that one.the Llanilltyd flock) - F4 Low Tipalt, a C8 Swarthburn out of a Z4 Hundith ewe bought out of Hawes a couple of years back off Ron and Fran Wilson. He was also the runner up in the progeny show, siring the three gimmer lambs. The Reserve Female was another A5 Old Hemley ewe from Duhonw, coming second in the class and then following that up with second place in the championship. His winner in the singles class was by the G6 Midlock, bought last year out of a ewe bought off John White, Rigg at Middleton. She went on to take the Mule Championship. Her partner in the pair, by the homebred C2 Shafthill was second in the singles too. Reserve in the Mules went to Ron and Fran Wilson with a gimmer bred at Kentmere Hall which had previously taken Reserve Champion at the Highland and overall at Skelton. In the Northumberland type class Martyn Archer had a field day, taking the first five placings in a strong class. Not totally unexpected after an eye catching display of lambs at North Sheep, but how the lambs have kept moving forward has to be a testament to the shepherding skills at Carry House, and they were by the G1 Highberries Highlander whom Martyn bought a half share off Neil Marston last year after it had taken male Champion at the Highland and an Oakhouse tup. It will be no surprise that he went and took the progeny Champion, a first for Martyn who was chuffed to bits to do so well. The reserve in the Mule progeny section went to Tom Willoughby from the Penhill with three gimmer lambs by G4 Low Tipalt. Champion Progeny Group - G & J Loughery Julie Loughery Co Antrim Report and photos by Julie Loughery Progeny Show Another great entry of Bluefaced Leicester and Mule sheep were presented at the annual Antrim Progeny Show. Weather was ideal for judge James Herdman, Edlingham having the tough job of judging this year s event. Enjoying a very successful day and winning their first Bluefaced Leicester Championship in the individual class were J Adams & Sons, Holmview, with their first prize gimmer, a smart sheep by F7 Firth an E1 Hewgill son purchased in Hawes for 4200. Reserve champion came from G & J Loughery Temain Flock, with their first prize ewe lamb, a modern lamb sired by G1 Cottage purchased for 8000 from Jimmy & Wendy Bell in Hawes 2014 and shared with Alistair Christie. The Temain and Holmview flocks were again coming out on top in the Progeny Show with Graham and Julie s Temain flock taking Breed Champion the Champion Progeny group with their three ewe lambs sired by G1 Cottage, with J Adams & Sons Holmview taking Reserve Champion progeny with their three gimmers sired by F7 Firth. J Adams & Sons, Holmview were again in the mix with their three Mule ewe lambs being awarded reserve Mule progeny group, sired again by F7 Firth. Michelle Wright, Mullaghwee was winning the Reserve Champion Mule in the individual class with her 1st Prize gimmer sired by a homebred son of their Forebrae stock tup. Champion Progeny Group - (Traditional Type) M & N Gray Peebles Progeny Show This year s Scottish Region Progeny Show was kindly hosted by Peebles Show on Saturday 15th August. With the very heavy rain the previous day we arrived to what was a very muddy show field, but the sun shone and the mud dried up for what turned out to be a very successful day for the show and the Bluefaced Leicester Association. In a first for an agricultural show in Scotland the decision was taken to have two completely separate classes for the Bluefaced Leicesters - the traditional type and the crossing type. This proved to be a very popular decision with members bringing forward a bumper entry of 270 sheep in total for our two judges to find their respective champions from. There were 160 in the traditional section and 110 in the crossing type section. Our judge in the traditional ring was highly respected breeder Mr Alex Bisset from the long established Middle Dukesfield flock based near Photos by Julie Loughery and Ron Stephen Hexham in Northumberland. In the crossing type ring the judge was another highly respected breeder Mr Graham Loughery from the Temain flock based in Co Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In the traditional ring Alex Bisset awarded his champion in the open classes to an outstanding aged ewe from Alan McClymont, Kirkstead. She is a homebred ewe sired by Shrewbridge D17, and out of a homebred ewe by a Carry House sire. The reserve was awarded to a gimmer from M & N Gray, Espley and she is sired by the 8500 F2 Ashes tup. In the progeny section Alex awarded his champion group to M & N Gray, Espley with their pair of lambs shown with their sire the F2 Ashes tup. One of the lambs out of this group was also first prize tup lamb. The reserve went to R Neill, Rossiebank with a pair of homebred shearling rams 840/G11 and 840/G19 and they were sired by 2882/D14 Mendick from J Dykes. G11 is to be kept and used as a stock tup. The reserve champion was awarded to the first prize ram lamb from J Wight & Sons, Midlock and he is sired by 980/E1 Hewgill. In the progeny classes Graham awarded his overall champion group to J Wight & Sons, Midlock with their pair of homebred aged ewes 1538/E89 and 1538/D109, and they were sired by the 980/C2 Hewgill. The reserve group was also awarded to the Wight family, Midlock with their group of three ram lambs and this group were all sired by the 980/E1 Hewgill. Champion Progeny Group - S A & R P Jones Welsh Photos by Robert Smith Progeny Show This year s Welsh Region Progeny Show was kindly hosted by Welshpool Livestock Sales on Monday 17th August. With excellent numbers of quality entries forward in all the Bluefaced Leicester classes it was never going to be an easy job for our judge this year for long time member of the Association Mr Brian Dallyn, Killington flock. In the open classes Brian awarded his overall champion to the male champion which came from S A & R P Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd flock, showing a homebred shearling ram 3363/G30 sired by a homebred ram 3363/E25 which was shown successfully in the aged ram class coming away with the red rosette. He was sired by the 3865/B1 E+ Arkleby, a ram who has produced a tremendous string of progeny year after year for the Craig Yr Orsedd flock. The reserve overall was awarded to the female champion a homebred shearling ewe shown by Dewi Parry, Nant-y-Glyd flock 4290/G014 who was sired by 3649/C1 Wanstead E+ out of a Hazelwood ewe. Reserve male was awarded to Paul Howell with his 1st prize ram lamb from the Long Mynd flock and he was sired by 4395/G1 Daisy. The ram lamb was also awarded the best skinned sheep prize. The reserve female was awarded to the first prize aged ewe from Miss J McLeod, Wanstead. The ewe is a homebred ewe 3649/C21 sired by 2832/Y8 Elian Nigel. In the progeny classes, a great show of groups were forward for judging and Brian awarded his champion group to S A & R P Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd flock with their first prize group of three ram lambs by the same sire, 3865/B1 E+ Arkleby. The reserve group was awarded to S A Harding, Shrewbridge flock with a group of three shearling ewes by the same sire, and these were all homebred ewes sired by 3570/E3 Long Mynd out of homebred ewes. In the ewe class M/s Jones & Tibbott, Gwenthriw, came away with the red rosette, and also took top spot in the shearling ewe class. In the Mule ewe lamb (coloured type) class there was a large class of 20+ lambs put forward for judging and this was a difficult class to judge and Richard eventually awarded his first prize to a sharp colourful lamb from M C Roberts, Myfyrian, with Stephen Abberley, Old Hemley gaining the blue rosette. Miss Daisy Williams took the honours in the Mule ewe lamb (whitefaced type) and D I L & E Jones, Llanilltyd taking the honours in the Mule ewe lamb (any other type) class. From all the first prize winners Richard Ellis awarded his breed champion to the 1st prize shearling ewe from M/s Jones & Tibbott with reserve awarded to the 1st prize Mule ewe lamb (coloured type) from M C Roberts. Publicity Report breeders is unmatched by any other profession, and each backend they put out their new rams with every confidence that in the spring they will produce better lambs than they have ever bred before - it will happen this year, last year went wrong because it was too wet, or too cold, or two warm or I dosed them with the wrong stuff, but this year it will be right!. This endless optimism is what makes us all get up in the morning or on the quad in gale force winds and horizontal rain. 2015 has been very challenging for many UK sheep farmers. Poor prime lamb prices particularly early in the season left some producers struggling to cover the cost of production, while some others selling when the number of lambs forward were at there highest levels were selling at prices not that much down on the year. Lots of quality grass to get lambs away quicker and the strong cull ewe price resulted in Mule prices being better than the breeder s expectations had been earlier in the year. Ram prices in all breeds were back on the year, but Bluefaced Leicesters seemed to achieve higher clearance rates than many other breeds. Demand is still as strong, but money is definitely short, with uncertainties when subsidy payment will arrive this winter and how much or how little they will be when they do come is concentrating people s minds on this winter s cash flow situation. This year we launched the new look Association website. The new site is fresh and modern looking as a modern progressive breed should have. It has been specifically designed to be as easily accessed from a tablet or smartphone as it is from a PC or laptop. This year has seen the growth of use of the website grow massively again, downloading catalogues on to your phone is now the norm. The days of studying printed catalogues in front of the fire at night are becoming a thing of the past, more likely to downloading it to the ipad, while the wife s watching EastEnders. Mulebook is still as popular as ever with a steady flow of new members joining it all the time, and it is still the place to show off the progeny of those sires bought the previous year. This autumn we saw a new breed record price from the Kirkby Redgate flock of 34,000. Commercial ram prices definitely were back, but top end breeders rams were in great demand, demonstrating the confidence our breeders have in the Bluefaced Leicester and the competition to buy those top sheep. The belief and enthusiasm of sheep 17

Ram lamb class 1-Tom Staunton, Mask View flock, 2-Paul Sammon, Firmount flock, 3-Tom Staunton, Mask View flock Southern Ireland Ram Sale in Ballinrobe Report by Thomas Staunton Champ - Tom Staunton, Mask View Shearling class winner and Res. Champ. - Aughafoy flock from Dj and Alastair Lyttle The South of Ireland Bluefaced Leicester club held their annual show in Aurivo Mart, Ballinrobe on Saturday 26th September. 100 of the 110 sheep on offer sold on the day. The club were delighted with buyers attending from all over Ireland. Many regular Mule breeders attended as well as many new faces, which was very encouraging with buyers focusing on quality and power. The Overall Champion of the show was a strong, modern ram lamb bred by Tom Staunton, Mask View flock. The lamb sired by Tanhouse Farm B4 and out of a dam by Midlock Controversy went on to sell for a sale record of 2000 Euros. The ram lamb class was competitive with a large entry of lambs combining both power and style. Paul Sammon (Firmount) was placed second selling for 950 Euros, third prize was a lamb from Tom Staunton (Mask View) selling for 1000 Euros, and Paul Sammon (Firmount) was placed fourth selling for 820 Euros. New breeder Michael Byrne was placed 5th and this lamb went on to sell for 1600 Euros. The 1st prize ram in the shearling and over class was a powerful ram from David Lyttle (Aughafoy) which also took Res. champion and sold for 1600 Euros. Kieran McGrath (Caoramor) took second with a classy shearling and Tom Staunton (Mask View) was third (bred by Caoramor). The female class was dominated by Firmount as Paul Sammon took 1st and 2nd while William Dowling took 3rd. It was a pleasure to have R Thomas, Tanhouse Farm judging the show, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank him once again. The future of Bluefaced Leicester stock in Ireland is very positive. 20

North East Well the clocks have gone back, dark nights are here and I m putting pen to paper to write the Autumn review once again. I m sure many of you will share my sentiment of wondering where the year went! Our agricultural events of 2015 started off with one of the biggest - the Great Yorkshire Show. After some wet weather the sun eventually decided to shine on judging day with Scott Thomason (Piel View) taking six of the red tickets and breed champion with his homebred two shear ram. To top the day off the family also won reserve champion with an aged ewe, which is no stranger to the show ring, as she was breed champion at Penrith in 2014. Judge Chris Armstrong (Broomhills) had to work hard in the heat and did a very good job with some strong sheep fielded for him to work through. The first of the sales for the North East was Hexham on September 23rd. This was the 51st annual show and sale of Bluefaced Leicesters with a small increase in numbers on the previous year. The champion on the day was from T F C Robinson & Son (Bog Hall) and the reserve champion went to T L Forster & Son (Lowes Fell). The top price of the day went to three rams from the Forster family at 950 and all bred the same way. On 1st October, Hawes made headlines and history again with some fantastic prices: Ram lambs averaged 1,380; top price 34,000 Aged rams averaged 1,577; top price 12,000 Shearling rams averaged 830; top price 4,600 Ewes averaged 796; top price 2,800 Gimmers averaged 616; top price 2,800 Gimmer lambs averaged 477; top price 1,600 Hawes has always proved to be an exciting Bluefaced Leicester sale. This year the overall championship went to Richard Hutchinson (Kirkby Redgate) with a lamb that generated some outstanding bidding when it came into the ring - the hammer didn t go down until a final bid of 34,000.. shattering the record price by an additional 11,000! Martyn Archer (Carry House) also had an outstanding day with a top price of 23,000 and an exceptional average for twelve lambs of 7,108. I hope you all made the prices you anticipated wherever you sold and I must express my sincere thanks to all those that have helped over the year at sales, shows and other events. As the year draws to a close I hope that winter is kind to you all and wish you a very Merry Christmas. See you next year, ready to do it all again! Oliver Scown, North East Chairman. North West The show season started on the 3rd June with NSA North Sheep hosted by Neil and Sally Marston at Millstone Moor Farm, Cockermouth, a lovely setting on a very nice sunny day after all the rain we had earlier in the week. Many thanks must go to Jack Lawson, Susan Hill, Andrew Carter and Willie Lawson for supplying the sheep for the stand doing an excellent job of promoting the breed. Thanks also to Helen for her hard work before hand and on the day, and also I would like to congratulate her on winning 3rd prize in the best breed stand competition. The Progeny Show was held at Penrith Show on the 25th July 2015. Once again we were lucky with good weather and good entries. There was a great display of sheep in all classes, and well done to everyone who showed sheep. A lot of hard work and effort goes into getting the sheep ready prior to and during the show. Thanks must go to judges, stewards, Helen and Rachael for their hard work in making it a successful day. Congratulations to Michael James and partners for taking the Breed Championship with a shearling tup. Michael also took the Reserve Championship with his aged ewe. The Champion Progeny Group in the Bluefaced Leicester section also went to Michael James with his group of three ewes. In the Mule progeny section, the Champion group was awarded to R D Archer & Son, Carry House with their group of three Mule ewe lambs shown with their sire (Blackface type). Reserve group was awarded to C T & J E Willoughby & Sons, Woodend Farm, with their group of three Mule ewe lambs shown with their sire (Swaledale type). 2015 Sales Longtown C & D held their second sale on Wednesday 16th September 2015 at Longtown Mart, with entries down on the year. Champion on the day came from Robert McTurk, Barlaes flock with a ewe lamb selling for 450. Reserve and top price went to Mosser Mains Farm with a tup lamb selling for 500. On the whole better types sold and maybe a change of day will help the sale to attract more buyers. Penrith Penrith & District Farmers held their annual sale on 8th October 2015 at Penrith Mart. Entries were down on last year, but there was a good crowd of people in attendance. Top price and Champion came from M/s Lord, Hewgill with a shearling tup selling for 3400. Trade was much the same as at other centres. Carlisle Harrison & Hetherington held their annual sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 9th October 2015. Once again there was a large entry of 1156 sheep forward much the same as last year. With the format of the sale changed 22

after last year, the ram lambs were this year split into two rings by type traditional type (ring 2), crossing type (ring 3) and shearling rams and females (ring 4), and this seemed to work well with the last sheep through the sale ring at 6.30 pm. The sheep were judged by type this year : traditional Champion was a ewe lamb from Chris Armstrong, Broomhills flock which sold for 1000. Male and Reserve Champion was from Scott Thomason, Piel View flock and sold for top price 2600. Crossing type Champion was a tup lamb from I Craig, Hanging Wells which sold for 3000. Top price in the crossing type was a tup lamb from W C Porter & Son, Riddings flock selling at 7000. On the whole the sale was much the same as at other centres with poorer types harder to cash on the day. Top price shearling selling at 2600 gns was exhibited by Graham and Julie Loughery, Temain. Congratulations to Timothy Wray, Knockstacken on again winning the Kerr Family trophy for the best pen of sheep, and also for his Reserve Champion, a shearling which sold for 1100 gns. The Armoy sale judged by John Morahan was won by Brendan McElhennon, Slievegallion Blues, with a ram lamb selling for 400 gns. Reserve Champion was a shearling ram exhibited by Michelle Wright, Mullaghwee which sold for 550 gns. Top price of the day was paid for the female Champion, a ewe lamb exhibited by the J & S flock of Jim Harkin and she sold at 950 gns. Seamus Laverty, Orraview sold the top priced shearling at 850 gns with William Adams, Holmview topping the ram lambs at 460 gns. Finally may I wish you all Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Mrs A M Little, Chairman North West Region Northern Ireland Unfortunately as I write this, the wind and rain is creating havoc outside, our mild Autumn now a distant memory. At Balmoral Show, our judge Alex Brown, Maqueston awarded John Blaney, Tievebuaile flock, Champion with his ewe. Michelle Wright, Mullaghwee, won the Mule Championship with a hogget, also judged by Alex Brown. Traditionally we finished off our show day on our stand in the N.S.A. pavilion where members and friends were offered a range of light refreshments!! Graham Loughery - Overall Flock Champion and Michelle Wright - Reserve Flock. Also pictured are Eoin Loughran (Judge) and his wife Brenda. Our progeny show at Antrim was judged by James Herdman. Overall Champion was a hogget sired by F7 Firth brought out by William Adams, Holm View, and Reserve Champion going to Graham and Julie Loughery with their ewe lamb sired by G1 Cottage. The Champion Progeny group, three ewe lambs by G1 Cottage were exhibited by Graham and Julie Loughery. Champion of the Mule progeny were three ewe lambs sired by E26 Firth and exhibited by Jim Mills. E26 Firth also sired the individual Mule, a ewe lamb also shown by Jim Mills. Honours at the local shows throughout 2015 were won by John Blaney, Hugh Henry, Graham and Julie Loughery, McCormick Bros, Richard Graham and Eamon McKeegan. In July at the N.S.A. event in Ballymena Market, the Bluefaced Leicester stand was awarded best overall, the first time we have achieved this. Many thanks to all who helped and also to the suppliers of the sheep on our display. Our premier sale was judged by Alex Brown, Macqueston. As this is my last report as Chairman, I would like to thank all who have contributed to the Northern Ireland Club in the last four years. It has been an honour to work with members and friends. Special thanks to our secretary, Diane Christie for her help. During my four years as Chairman I have found out that Diane gets through an incredible amount of work and definitely has the patience of a saint! To mark my term as Chairman, I presented the club with a shield which will be competed for annually at Antrim Show and will be awarded to the winner of the Bluefaced Leicester Young handlers. Congratulations to the first recipient - 2015 winner Kelly O Kane. Finally, four years later, thanks to all who have contributed to the Northern Ireland Club and I wish you all and our friends from across the pond best wishes for the future. Richard Graham - Chairman Scotland Sitting writing my report for the Autumn Review, the clocks are about to change and the weather is being kind to us. I find it hard to believe it s a year since a wrote the last report. The first event we attended in the Scottish region this year was the Highland Sheep event at Fearn Farm, Tain. This NSA event was a great opportunity to meet a lot of our members in the north of the country. I would like to thank the Douglas family, Dubh Glas flock and the Hunter family, Glen flock for supplying some top quality sheep for the stand which were a credit to both flocks and very much appreciated. Moving on to the Highland Show in June that was judged by Scottish breeder Robin Bell, Knockairdie flock. The Champion on the day was awarded to a home bred three crop ewe from the Wight family at Midlock. Reserve Champion was the aged ram from Auld Tinnis. This year there was a tremendous show of sheep at the Highland Show, and it s a credit to all the breeders that took part. The Progeny Show this year had a new format and venue, with Peebles Show kindly hosting it. The judge for the day in the crossing type section was Northern Ireland breeder Graham Loughery. Graham awarded his breed Champion in the individual classes to M R Thornborrow, Dawyck flock with their home bred gimmer. Reserve went to J Wight & Sons, Midlock with their first prize tup lamb. In the crossing type progeny classes, Champion group was awarded to the aged ewes from the Wight family, Midlock flock with Reserve also going to the Wight family with their three ram lambs. On to the traditional type classes, and the day s judge was Northumberland breeder Alex Bisset. In the open classes, breed Champion was awarded to A McClymont, Kirkstead with a home bred ewe. Reserve was awarded to M & N Gray, Espley with a home bred gimmer. In the traditional type progeny classes, Champion group went to M & N Gray with a pair of ram lambs shown with their sire - Ashes F2, and reserve group went to R Neill, Rosssiebank with his shearling rams. In the Mule progeny classes, the judge on the day was John McDougall. John awarded the Champion group to R D Archer & Son, Carry House with a group of three ewe lambs (Blackface type) with sire - Midlock G34. Reserve group went to three Cheviot Mule ewe lambs from H Cockburn & Partners, Kingside. Again the Progeny show has proven to be a great success, and it is great to see so much support for the event from members all over Scotland and North of England. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peebles Show, and everybody that helped to make this event such a great success. Also I would like to thank the sponsors - Davidsons Animal Feeds and Lawrie & Symington Ltd for their support. Kelso Sale - Kelso tup sale kicked off the start of the Bluefaced Leicester sales, and the judge for the pre sale show was J Thompson of the J & D Blues flock. The Champion was awarded to a shearling ram from J & J Cunningham, Parkgatestone flock which later sold for 9000. Reserve Champion went to a ram lamb from A Warnock, Dreva. Averages were slightly back on the year with more rams sold : 514 shearlings averaged 848 with 30 ram lambs averaging 890. I would like to thank Natural Stockcare for sponsoring the show. Castle Douglas Sale - The day s judge was Jim Cunningham, Parkgatestone who awarded the Champion rosette to a shearling tup from Alex Kirkpatrick, Barr, and Jim later backed up his decision by purchasing the Champion for 1400. Reserve Champion also went to the Kirkpatrick family. Averages were back slightly on the year with shearlings averaging 549.17 and ram lambs averaging 659.32. I would like to thank Tarff Valley for sponsoring the show. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Scottish members for their support over the last year and look forward to seeing you all in 2016. Stephen Crozier - Chairman South West I was delighted with the breed stand that we had at NSA Sheep South West held on the Quicks Farm in Mid Devon in June. Everyone pulled together to erect and man the stand, and we had a great display of sheep penned on the day. Many thanks to those who brought sheep - Helen Havill for the traditional rams, Peter Heard for his crossing ewes and David Ridge for the crossbreds. We had many favourable comments about the look of the stand and the quality of the sheep. Many thanks to Neil Cole and family for hosting an evening in August for a demonstration of preparing sheep for show and sale. It was responding to a request from new breeders who wanted to learn the way to present sheep including trimming and colouring. It was well attended by Bluefaced Leicester breeders and those producing Mule Ewe lambs. Neil rents the prison farm at Princetown, one of the highest and bleakest areas of Dartmoor, and there was good feedback from those attending the instruction evening. We have seen an excellent demand for all types of Mule Ewe lambs in the South West this Autumn, with trade being just a touch back compared with last year, but better than expected seeing the prime lamb market has been down. The South West Mule group based on Dartmoor had two very successful sales at Tavistock in September and another at Exeter Livestock Centre. There was also a full clearance of Exmoor Mule Ewe lambs at Blackmoor Gate Market on Exmoor with regular buyers returning to purchase this very popular cross of the Bluefaced Leicester on the Exmoor Horn Ewe. Our local ram sales in this part of the country has seen a strong commercial trade for the best tups, but no fancy prices. Congratulations to Neil Cole for winning the championship with his shearling crossing type ram at the Tavistock Association Sale. This ram sold for the top price of the day at 660 gns. His 15 rams forward averaged near 500 gns for this good run of sheep. Other vendors benefited from this strong demand and overall the sale was pleasing. Our club ram sale held a week later in September at Blackmoor Gate saw a variable trade with buyers more selective. Barry Nicholls topped the market with one of his shearlings at 600. Helen Havill was next with a couple of rams at 560. Champion of the day was from B C Dallyn and this shearling fetched 540. Happy New Year - Brian Dallyn - Chairman 24

Wales I can t quite believe that it is that time of year again to put together this small report for the Autumn Review. Rams are with the ewes again, so the cycle continues. This year we held our Welsh AGM on a Sunday following a delicious roast lunch at the Royal Oak, Welshpool. Thanks to the members who supported the meeting. Once again we had a great stand at Welsh Sheep 2015, with lots of interest. This year it was held at Glanmeilheli, which was a great advert for the breed as they are Welsh Mule breeders. The Powell family put on a great show for everyone to see. Thanks to everyone who supplied sheep and helped on the stand. wasn t as bad as feared. The Pre-sale champion of the NSA Builth Wells went to the Espley flock and sold for 3000 gns. Top price went to Ted Williams with H3 Lower Down for 3900 gns. Overall Champion at Welshpool went to the female champion from Aled Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd. The overall Champion was awarded to a female from Dewi Williams, Elian at the Ruthin Sale. Unfortunately we won t be holding our Christmas social evening this year, due to a mix up of dates. Please give me your thoughts and feelings of what we can do in January. This leaves me to finish by hoping that winter will be kind to us all, and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a successful 2016. Michael James - Chairman Tuesday of the Royal Welsh Show was another great day. Many thanks go to Martyn Archer for travelling to Wales to judge, who in my opinion did an excellent job at judging!! As usual there was strong classes of sheep and thanks to everyone that exhibited. I had an excellent day having Champion and Reserve. Champion was a Duhonw shearling ewe by Duhonw Golden Balls and reserve was a home bred aged ewe. Many thanks go to Ray Harding and Paul Howell for suppling the sheep for the stand, and not forgetting Helen with all her hard work too. The buffet went down a treat at the breed party, as did a small amount of alcohol! Again our Welsh Progeny Show was held in Welshpool Livestock Market. Thanks go to Mr Brian Dallyn who was the BFL judge. The overall Champion with a homebred shearling ram went to Aled Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd, and Aled also had champion group. The reserve overall champion was awarded to the female champion a homebred shearling ewe shown by Dewi Parry, Nant-y-Glyd. In the Mule section, many thanks go to Mr Richard Ellis for judging. Champion was a coloured type shearling ewe from M/s Jones & Tibbott, and reserve went to a coloured ewe lamb from the Roberts family, Myfyrian. The champion Mule group went to Michael James, Duhonw. This leads me on to the sales. In my opinion, this year s prices 25
