Richard Thomas Ahead of the EU Referendum I felt that the vote was without doubt the biggest political decision in anybody s career in agriculture, and the political fallout that we have subsequently seen certainly shows that. There is no doubt that we will look back on these few months as one of those defining periods in agricultural history. We all recognised at the time the vote was deeply contentious, and that certainly proved to be the case at our AGM, where even our president Mr James Porter and Mr Jack Lawson could not agree if it was it better to be In or Out of Europe. With the decision now made, it is clear the result presents us with an opportunity to reshape and establish fresh principles that are fit for purpose, which enables us to become a progressive and forward thinking Association. This is the beauty of your President Elect/Council members they have been appointed to represent you, and to have a voice in influencing what our Blueface members are wanting and thinking. One point that has been highlighted is the exceptional quality of sheep present at our Autumn sales, and this is reflected in some of the high prices achieved. On that note, our Council have taken the decision, and to give a very clear message to our members that for next year our inspectors will be committed to improving the standards expected of us as pedigree sheep breeders. Whether our Association plans are ambitious or imaginative, nothing must be off the table, so by working together we can turn our ambitions into reality and shape the breed into a new and dynamic future. A discussion group has been set up on Mulebook, so if you feel it is a thing of the past and should be let go, please join the discussion. If you feel it is a good worthwhile service, and that it would be missed, please get on to Mulebook and tell us or it will end early next year. NSA Events 2016 The Association has been well represented around the British Isles again this year with display stands at ScotSheep which this year was held in Peebleshire, and NSA Malvern. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has helped with these one day specialist events providing sheep for the stands and helping out with building of the stands. Your help is invaluable. Shows 2016 The Association were in attendance with their display stands at The Balmoral Show, The Royal Highland Show, The Great Yorkshire Show and The Royal Welsh Show. All the shows provided excellent classes of Bluefaced Leicesters again this year with the classes at the Royal Highland Show being split this year for the first time, and this looks to have been a great success for both competitors and judges. Many congratulations to all winners and champions, and to all exhibitors for turning out their sheep to such a high standard. Agri Expo was our final event of the year held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, and thank you to all members who provided sheep for stands at these events this year. Thank you on behalf of the Association to all judges who took the time to attend these important shows and events in the Association s calendar. Sales 2016 The female sales were held in January at Hawes and Carlisle. Top price at Hawes was a gimmer hogg from M/s Lord, HEWGILL selling at 5,600, and Overall Champion was awarded to a gimmer hogg from Robin Booth, SMEARSETT selling at 4,300. Overall Champion and top price at Carlisle this year was for a gimmer hogg from the KIRKBY REDGATE flock of W M Hutchinson & Sons. This was also a new breed record for a female sold at an Association sale selling at 11,000 gns. The ram sales in the back end did not reach the dizzy heights of last year s trade, however, numbers at sales were up at all centres and so were the averages seeing an increase in demand for both traditional and crossing types Top price for a crossing type shearling ram this year was brought out for sale by the Wight family, MIDLOCK at the Kelso ram sale selling at 12,000. Top price for crossing type ram lambs was shared with two achieving 15,000, both at the Hawes sale. The first one through the ring was from J Wight & Sons, MIDLOCK at a reasonable time of 5.00 pm in the afternoon, and the second one to achieve this price went through the ring seven hours later at midnight from M/s J & K Metcalf & Son, SILVER HILL. Top price for a traditional shearling ram was brought out for sale at the NSA Wales & Border Ram Sales, Builth Wells by Miss S A Harding, SHREWBRIDGE selling for 4,400 gns. Top price for a traditional ram lamb was also achieved at this sale coming from the ESPLEY flock of Mick and Nicky Gray which made the long journey down from Northumberland worthwhile when their ram lamb was sold for 7,800 gns. Thank you on behalf of the Association to all judges who took the time to attend these important sales for the breed, and also to all chief stewards and stewards for their time and help. 6 Penrith Progeny Show Article and photos by Wayne Hutchinson Champion Progeny Group (Traditional) It was a packed show at Penrith, with two rings running and a lot of sheep to be judged, with plenty of showers from northern England and Scotland, under the learned eye of well-respected judges from their circles who both had some depth of quality to pick their eventual winners from. First to finish by a whisker was the traditional types, judged by Drew Brown, Castle Douglas. His Champion and Reserve came from the same flock from Scott and Clare Thomason aided by son Isaac. Fresh from their success at the Great Yorkshire Show, they again produced the goods, with a different set of sheep, winning with a cracking gimmer lamb making its debut in the ring, sired by H4 Auchry bought out of Builth Wells last year as a bit of a chancer according to Scott. Out of a ewe by F9 Myfyrian, it was exactly the same way bred as the male Champion and Reserve overall in the traditional section, making the chancer a very good gamble indeed, and made even better when his gimmer lamb went on to take the Reserve Interbreed title later on in the day. Running up to the Champion in the reserve section was a gimmer shearling from Stephen Crozier. She was sired by Long Mynd G7 and out of a ewe by Watersyke C10. The Reserve male Champion was a tup lamb from 21 year old Stuart Nelson, showing at Penrith for only his second time. Based up near Lanark he got into the breed only a couple of years ago. His tup lamb is by D5 Elian he bought from Frank Johnson, Ashes in a private deal as a four shear. The Champion progeny group was won by Matt and Elaine Drummond who travelled all the way down from Ayr to show, with a trio of powerful gimmer shearlings by Woodcroft F4, a Cernyw D1 son bought at Carlisle in Stuart Nelson was back in among the tickets for his fledgling flock, which runs to 17 ewes as he took the Reserve in the progeny group with three tup lambs by the D5 Elian, making it a day to remember for this young breeder. 7 Champion Progeny Group (Crossing) In the crossing type section Richard Thomas from the Tanhouse flock worked his way through the classes with an intense dedication and rising to the top was a very stylish gimmer from the Riddings flock. She is by the homebred ram Riddings Domino who is sired by Midlock C3 shared with Asby Hall, and has been doing ever so well for both flocks over the past few years. She was pushed hard to the championship ticket by a homebred tup shearling from the Cassington X flock from Matt Drummond, who had to drag the family out of bed at 3.30 am to get to the show - that is some dedication to the breed. The shearling ram is by renowned sire Midlock Y1 and out of a ewe with Lunesdale and Highberries bloodlines, and he stood second in a strong class at the Highland. The Cassington X flock s success wasn t finished there as their gimmer shearling, bought from Michael James Duhonw flock got the Reserve female ticket. She was sired by Old Hemley D7, and out of a ewe by Halkswell A5. The Reserve male champion was a strong tup lamb from M/s Pedley, Yore House, near Hawes. He was by G2 SP Dalpeddar, bought at Hawes. The progeny champions came from the Riddings flock, with a trio of ewes by the prolific Midlock C3. These three ewes were very correct, modern examples of the breed and a culmination of years of dedication for the Porter family, with three generations in attendance at the show. The Reserve in this section went to the Yore House flock, again to their tup lambs, but this time by H2 Drimsynie, a son of the 15,000 Midlock Knight Rider bought in Hawes last year. The Pedleys have had a good run of Mules this last couple of years. Breed Champion (Crossing) In the fiercely contested Mule section, which saw some 25 pairs of lambs out, won by Ron and Fran Wilson, and 49 single lambs, won by Andrew Nicholson. Overall Champion was a gimmer shearling from Ron and Fran Wilson which has been winning at the Highland and Yorkshire shows, bred by Neil Marston. The progeny section was won by John Smith-Jackson with three gimmer lambs by the 4000 Midlock G6, a son of E1 Hewgill, which he shares with Fred and Ruth Dinsdale, Harkerside. The Champion lamb last year was by him and despite only having nine gimmer lambs by him this year, he was still producing the goods. The reserve in the section was Martyn Archer, who had a good day, despite not being able to attend as he was judging the Antrim Progeny Show. He won the Blackface Mule section and his tup Highberries Highlander which he shares with Neil Marston took the blue and white ticket with some really smart lambs. Res. Champion (Crossing) 7

In the individual classes, Martyn found his Overall Champion from the Holmview flock of J Adams & Sons who won it last year. 16 Welsh Progeny Show Article and photos by Helen Carr-Smith Champion Progeny Group On one of the warmest days of the year, another quality show of Bluefaced Leicesters were brought out for judging at this year s Welsh region progeny show held within Welshpool Livestock Auction. 17 Champion Mule Progeny Group In the progeny classes, again a great show of groups were forward for judging and Michael awarded his champion to M Roberts, Myfyrian flock with their group of a recorded ram lamb and ewe lamb with their sire /G2 Street. The ewe lamb is out of homebred ewe 1183/F14, and the ram lamb is 1183/J1, and out of another homebred ewe 1183/B38. The reserve group was awarded to S A & R P Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd flock with their first prize group of three ram lambs by Arkleby B1 E+. The lambs are embryo lambs, two of which are out of a homebred ewe 3363/B37 whose bloodlines go back to the 119/Z2 Cocklaw which was bought at Hexham as a lamb. The third lamb is by another homebred ewe 3363/Z69, and is a full brother to homebred E25 and G1 which was top price at the 2014 Builth Wells sale selling for 3000 gns to A McClymont, Kirkstead flock. In the Mule section our judge for the day was respected Mule breeder E Hughes. In the open classes another outstanding run of sheep were put before the judge. In the aged ewe class, W Jones, Gwenthriw came away with the red rosette, and also took top spot in the shearling ewe class. In the Mule ewe lamb (coloured type) class, the honours were awarded to W Jones, Upper Rheol who also took first prize in the ewe lamb (whitefaced type) class with J T Armstrong, Herefordshire taking the first prize in the ewe lamb (any other type) class. From all the first prize winners, Mr Hughes awarded his champion to the 1st prize shearling ewe from W Jones with reserve to the 1st prize aged ewe also from W Jones. The shearling ewe was purchased in the Autumn of 2015 amongst a pen of 20 bought for 185 per head. Both the ewes were sired by Llanilltyd rams bred by Idwal and Tom Jones, Libanus, Brecon, and out of Beulah ewes bred by T Bound, Cefnbach, Oakley Park, Llanidloes In the progeny section, the overall group was awarded to the group of three ewe lambs (whitefaced type) shown with their sire from E Owen, Cernyw. 18 Article by Kieran McGrath Southern Ireland Ram Sale in Ballinrobe 1st Prize Shearling Ram Overall Champion The annual show and sale of the South of Ireland Bluefaced Leicester Club took place in Aurivo Mart, Ballinrobe on Friday the 16th September Judge for the day was John Holden, Blairmount flock, Co. Antrim. There was a strong show of ram lambs where the first prize and overall champion of the show was exhibited by Kieran McGrath, Caoramor flock in Co. Donegal. He was sired by H1 Aghowle Views and sold in a two way split to Tom Staunton, Mask View flock and Emmett Sweeney, Quigabar flock for 840 Euros. H1 Aghowle Views was also the breeding behind a brace of lambs from Caoramor, with the top price of the day, 1300 Euros being achieved and another selling to 1,060 Euros. Other leading prices in the ram lamb class were from John Morahan who sold two ram lambs by H2 Slievegallion Blues to 1,200 Euros, for the second prize ram lamb, and Reserve Champion of the day, and another at 1100 Euros. In the shearling and aged ram class, first prize was given to a shearling ram exhibited by Tom Staunton, Mask View flock. This powerful shearling was by a homebred tup which had been retained and subsequently sold to 1180 Euros. Second place in the shearlings was exhibited by Alistair Lyttle, Rosefield flock, and he was sired by G1 Rosefield and sold for 880 Euros. Reserve Champion 1st Prize Ewe Lamb In the female section, first prize was awarded to Tom Staunton with a ewe lamb bred by D7 Blairmount, and later sold to new breeder Joe Scahill for 510 Euros. Second prize was given to a ewe lamb exhibited by Kieran McGrath again bred by H1 Aghowle Views and later sold for 410 Euros. The sale saw an almost full clearance, with an increase in numbers sold on the year. There is a significant increase in the use of Bluefaced Leicesters in Southern Ireland with sheep sold into many counties in Ireland. The continued assistance of the Association is greatly appreciated, and it would be impossible for the club to undertake the many promotional adventures without this invaluable assistance. 18

21 North East The season started with the Great Yorkshire Show. A lovely sunny day, with a very busy crowd around the ring, with a lot of interest in the breed, although my wife was more interested in the red kites above our heads! Some classes had more sheep than space, and the judges I m sure were pleased with the amount of sheep brought forward for judging. The final assessment after a series of exceptionally well populated classes, awarded Scott and Claire Thomason s Piel View flock from Walney Island the Championship. On a personal note, I went to see the Ward Sisters [no not a hospital outing] to deliver their new member tags. These girls are from the North York Moors, and it was good to see very new members of the Association taking the tup lamb class at their very first outing. They were absolutely delighted and so was I, and it is good to see new members coming along and excelling. The first registered sale of the year was Hexham, and it was joined by an all breeds sale providing brisk trading. The Overall Champion was a shearling ram from James Herdman s Edlingham flock, and realised 1100, with the top price of 1300 being achieved by T L Forster & Son, Lowes Fell for their shearling ram. The Reserve Champion and Champion ram lamb came from the Burndale flock of Derek Henderson and made 400. The Hawes sale was a very long, but enjoyable day for me. Acting as Chief Steward meant that I needed to be there early [6 am], and as I had previously made the draw for the 943 sheep catalogued for sale that day 753 of which were ram lambs, I took much ribbing about it as our own few ram lambs were practically the last in and went through at quarter past midnight! I got to bed at 2 am and survived, but it took a couple of days to recover at my age! Two top prices of 15,000 were realised for Midlock and the Silver Hill flocks, and the championship went to R D Archer, Carry House whose lamb fetched 5,500. Lots of high prices resulted at the Hawes sale, but too numerous to mention, so please look at Facebook for further info: blueleicester. On the day, 631 ram lambs sold averaged This was 30 more than last year, and a whopping 44 increase on average prices for ram lambs on the year before. With 90 aged rams and 56 females also sold on the same day, there was plenty to see for those packing the ring, and for those buyers and supporters who stuck it out until the bitter end at 1 am. Thank you from all the vendors! The date for the sale of Bluefaced Leicester females at Hawes has been set for Saturday 21st January 2017 further details will appear on the Association s website in due course. Best Wishes to you all for Laurence Allison - Chairman North West As I write this report winter has certainly arrived with a bang. Fortunately autumn has made up for the clashy summer in the North West, where many people struggled to get silage / harvest etc. It has been a great last two months for the tups running and catching up with summer work! The Progeny Show was held at Penrith on 23rd July The day was a great success with the sheep judged by their type. Although in the Bluefaced Leicester sections numbers were down, the standard of sheep were of great quality. A huge thanks must go to all of the exhibitors, the judges, stewards, and to Helen and Rachael for making the show such a continued success. On this note, I think we must continue supporting such events to promote our breed and on a personal note, these socialising events are few and far between! The traditional type champion and reserve came from the Piel View flock. The champion, a gimmer lamb, went on to take the reserve interbreed championship. In the traditional type progeny groups, the champion came from Matt and Elaine Drummond, Cassington, with three gimmer shearlings. The reserve progeny group also going up to Scotland with Stuart Nelson of Medwyn with three tup lambs. In the crossing type, the breed champion came from W C Porter & Son, Riddings flock, with a gimmer shearling, and the reserve was a shearling tup from Matt and Elaine Drummond, Cassington. Three ewes from W C Porter & Son, Riddings picked up the champion progeny group ticket, with reserve champion progeny group going to M/s Pedley, Yore House with three ewe lambs. The mule progeny section was won by John Smith-Jackson, Shafthill, with three Swaledale type gimmer lambs, and the reserve went to Martyn Archer, Carry House with three Blackface type gimmer lambs. A huge congratulations goes out to all exhibitors. The first of our sales started at Penrith on the 6th October. The Champion on the day was awarded to A C Hutchinson, Redhill with a ram lamb, and the Reserve came from M/s Lord, Hewgill with a ewe lamb. The top price of the day went to M/s Lord, Hewgill for a tup shearling at 6,500. Carlisle sale, held at Borderway Mart on 7th October, had a entry of 1175 sheep on offer. The sale had a real buzz about it with trade reflecting this. The average in the traditional lamb section was up 212 on the year for 173 sold (average ), and the average in the crossing type section was up around 75 on the year for nearly 350 lambs sold (average ). This gives us plenty of optimism and confidence for the future! The traditional Champion was awarded to a tup lamb from Alan Clarke, Mosser Mains which sold at 3,200, and the top price in that section went to M/s Shand & Carter, Street flock for a tup lamb making 5,200. The crossing type Champion was awarded to a tup lamb from W C Porter & Son, Riddings which sold at 4,000, and the top price went to M/s Lawson, Hundith with a tup lamb selling at 9,000. The setting trend seems as though tups with power and scope are very much sought after. Agri Expo was held on Friday 28th October, and there were sheep on the stand from The Davy Shields and Piel View flocks. The stand seemed busy throughout the day, and attracted a number of possible future breeders, as well as providing existing members with refreshments and a place to catch up on the year s events with one another. I must thank Helen, Billy and Ann Little and Susan Hill for all of their hard work putting the stand together, and the same organisation that goes on behind the scenes. Finally I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a prosperous New Year and a happy lambing! Scott Thomason - Chairman 21

22 Northern Ireland As 2016 is drawing to a close, the weather has recently turned wet and cold as I sit and write my report. Spring this year was very trying for most farmers with little grass being seen until the end of May. The Royal Balmoral Show was held in May at the maize show grounds near Lisburn, and Mr Neil Marston had the difficult job of judging the event which received a very good turnout of stock from Bluefaced Leicester breeders. Mr Marston awarded his Champion to a ewe from John Blaney & Sons with his reserve going to a ewe lamb from the same flock. This kicked off the show season for 2016 with most of the summer shows well supported by members, and the standard of sheep getting better from year to year. Our Progeny Show is held each year in conjunction with Antrim Show, and this year, like past years received large entries in all sections. Mr Martyn Archer, Carry House was the man to impress on the day, and what impressed him most was a ram lamb from William Adams, Holmview flock which was awarded Champion on the day. Champion progeny group went to Seamus Laverty, Orraview flock with a ram and three gimmers. August saw Mule ewe lambs and hoggs being sold, and again this year trade was brisk for both lots. Our premier ram sale was held in Ballymena Livestock Mart in September, and was well supported by buyers and sellers seeing shearlings average up by 200 and lamb average up by 150. Armoy was the venue for our second sale, and like the first sale, trade was brisk and averages were up on the previous year. As the nights draw in, we held our annual flock competition, and this year Mr Eamon McCormick judged the event with 15 flocks taking part. The results were awarded at our annual dinner dance in The Adair Arms, Ballymena on the 5th of November, and we were lucky to have the Association Secretary Helen Carr-Smith and her husband Robert in attendance to give out the awards. The flock competition results were announced, with the Champion large flock awarded to William Adams, Holmview flock, and the Champion small flock going to Hugh Henry, Starbog flock. Overall Champion flock went to the Holmview flock, and reserve went to G & J Loughery, Temain flock. All who attended the dinner had a good night with a few sore heads the following day. All that remains now is for me to thank everyone who has helped me in this past year to help promote the breed, and to thank our efficient office staff Helen and Rachael who have been very helpful indeed! I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and off course a happy lambing. Hugh Henry - Chairman Scotland The season started with Scotsheep at Blythbank, West Linton, and this was a first class venue, which was very well attended. Many thanks must go to Leadburnlea, Kirkstead, Mid Auchengray and Dreva flocks for supplying sheep for the stand. The Royal Highland Show again attracted a record entry of sheep, and this year the show was split into two sections. First to be judged was the crossing type by John Stott from the Laund flock. The Wight family from Midlock won the Championship in both the male and the female section with the gimmer taking overall. The traditional section was judged by Nicky Robinson, Cocklaw flock. The Championship went to the McClymont family from Kirkstead with an aged tup, and this was the McClymont s first time showing at the Highland. The Reserve title was awarded to the Drummond family from Cassington with a ewe. The party on the Friday night was again a great success proving more popular every year. Many thanks to all who assisted at this event. August brought the Progeny Show at Peebles, which was very well supported with quality stock on show despite ground conditions being very wet and muddy. The Championship in the traditional section was awarded to a pair of gimmers from A McClymont, Kirkstead and the Reserve title to a pair of tup lambs from M & N Gray, Espley. The Championship in the crossing section was awarded to R D Archer & Sons, Carryhouse with their group of three ram lambs. The Reserve title went to J Wight & Sons, Midlock with their pair of gimmers. The start of the sales is always keenly awaited. At Kelso the traditional Champion was a shearling ram from A McClymont, Kirkstead selling for The Crossing Champion was a ram lamb from M/s Thornborrow, Dawyck selling for Topping the sale was a crossing type shearling ram from the Wight family, Midlock. Trade was strong for good quality tups. Castle Douglas sale was next, and topping the trade was a shearling ram from Alex Brown, Macqueston flock selling for The Champion on the day came from the Cassington X flock which sold for Congratulations to all vendors at these sales for presenting their sheep in excellent condition. I would like to finish my report by thanking the committee members and everyone who has helped throughout the year. I hope that everyone who has purchased new breeding stock are still happy with their purchases, and that they realise and hopefully surpass your expectations. Best wishes to you all and your families for Kate Smith - Chairman South West The past year has seen a major fallout with all the political parties in Westminster, and a new Prime Minister brought about by the nation voting to leave the European Union. Agriculture is at a crossroads with very uncertain times ahead post Brexit. This doesn t seem to have affected the sheep trade too much, in fact the weaker pound has meant our finished lambs have been sought after on the export market during the summer, thus maintaining a good lamb price when we usually see the seasonal trough. Strong lamb prices has helped the breeding ewe trade, and Mule type ewes have been much sought after particularly the better sorts. This difference in price has also been evident with the Mule lamb trade at our three main centres with recognised specific ewe lamb sales. The South West Mule group based on Dartmoor have sales at Tavistock and Exeter markets, and the Exmoor Mule sales are held at Blackmoor Gate. The strongest lambs were in much demand and vendors of these types went home happy. Our pedigree ram sales in our area have followed a similar pattern with only the top end selling really well. Congratulations to Richard Turner for winning the championship at the Tavistock Association sale with his crossing type ram lamb. Helen Havill took the top honour at the Blackmoor Gate club sale with her traditional shearling ram which went on to make top price of the day. 22

23 Bluefaced Leicester summer show classes in the area were well supported particularly at The Devon County Show in May. Thanks to John Stott for travelling down from Lancashire to be our judge. Dick and Ann Marie Montague took the championship with their two year old ram. NSA Sheep South West next year will be held at a farm very close to Junction 27 on the M5, so very accessible from all parts of the South West Of England, and people who might like to come from further afield. We will have our breed stand there as usual. We now looking forward to meeting up for our South West Christmas Dinner, this year to be held at the Bearslake Inn on Dartmoor on the 15th of December. A good get together before the New Year. Then we will be scanning ewes, and before you know it lambing will be around again. Brian Dallyn - Chairman Wales Sitting down to write this report a month late on, on what has got to be the wettest day of a very good Autumn. Looking back on a year that has some how flown by, leaving us to look forward to lambing and doing it all over again!! Our first event of the year was the Royal Welsh Show, judged this year by Rory Bell, Teviot. On an extremely hot day, he found his Champion in the aged ram from Tudor Harris, Bonvilston, with the Reserve going to the Jones family, Robleston. Our annual social followed that evening with a good crowd in attendance. Then on to the Progeny Show at Welshpool, and the blue classes were judged this year by Michael Gray, Espley. The Champion went once again to Aled Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd and the Reserve went to Elfyn Owen, Cernyw. The Mules were judged by Eric Hughes, who thankfully stood in last minute when we found out our judge was at home baling hay having got his dates mixed up. The Champion and Reserve in the Mules went to Will Jones. Builth Wells ram sale was next, and a good trade saw shearlings average 625 up 50 on the year. Topping the day was Michael Gray, Espley with a ram lamb selling for 7800 gns. Champion of the day was from Aled Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd and the Arthur Yates trophy for the best run of tups went once again to Dewi Williams, Elian. We are hoping to hold a dinner in the early part of next year, and we will send out details once everything is confirmed. I d like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who have helped by putting sheep on the Association s stand at the various events, and to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stephen Abberley - Chairman 23
