Welcome to our Festival! Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Ensemble is pleased to invite all dancers and instructors to participate in the sixth annual Manitoba Ukrainian Dance Festival! The festival strives to create an experience that will allow dancers and instructors to grow and develop under the constructive criticism of our accomplished adjudicators while having the opportunity to perform for an audience in a theatre atmosphere. The festival will be conducted in a professional manner where all aspects of theatre etiquette will be applied to the dancers onstage performance, backstage organization, and audience members. OFFICIAL FESTIVAL RULES 1. The festival strives to create an experience allowing participants to grow and develop as dancers while having the opportunity to perform for an audience in a theatre atmosphere. 2. AGE LIMITS: Age of participant shall be considered as of January 1 of the festival year. Averages that calculate as a fraction will be rounded to the nearest whole number to determine the appropriate age category. 3. Companies/Ensembles with professional status are not eligible to register for the festival. 4. No substitutions may be made for any participant. The name of the participant who is listed on the entry form is the only person eligible to compete in the registered entry. 5. FEES: Fees must be made by cheque payable to Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and sent via post. SOLO/DUET/TRIO $17.00 per dancer GROUP $12.00 per dancer Monetary refund will not be given for the cancellation of entries. 6. ENTRY SIZES: Solo 1 dancer Duet 2 dancers Trio 3 dancers Small Group: 4-6 dancers Medium Group: 7-12 dancers Large Group: 13+ dancers 7. Solo, duet, and trio entries will be scheduled on Friday only. 8. Entries are split into male, female, and mixed categories. All gender divisions are organized according to age classification and dance category. 9. TIME LIMITS: Entries must strictly follow the outlined time limits as the festival is scheduled accordingly. Time limits are as follows: Solo: 2.5 minutes Duet: 2.5 minutes Trio: 2.5 minutes Small/Medium Groups: 5.0 minutes* Large Groups: 6.5 minutes* *Entries in the Hopak and Pryvit categories may exceed the maximum time limit

10. OVERTIME FINES: If a dance exceeds the specified time restriction, the instructor/school will be automatically fined $40.00. Timing begins when the first dancer steps on stage and ends when the final dancer exits the stage (including bows). All fines will need to be paid by the end of the festival day. If payment is not received, the entry number will not be qualified for scholarship or adjudicator s choice awards. The dancer(s) will not receive adjudication CD/sheets until this amount is paid. The time infraction will not reflect the mark given by the adjudicator. 11. The final deadline for entries and payment is January 12, 2018. All entries delivered or postmarked after this date will be subject to a $15.00 per entry late fee. 12. Dance groups who have issues with certain times and dates must please include your requests with your entry. The Festival committee will do its best to honour requests. 13. Music must be submitted on one track per CD. The CD must be labelled with the name of dance school, region, title of the dance, and session number. A professional sound system will be provided during the festival and a sound technician will handle all music. Cassette tapes will not be accepted. It is advised to have a backup of music on a CD/iPod in case of technical difficulties. All music must be submitted minimum one (1) session prior to performance by the instructor of the group. 14. Onstage rehearsals are not permitted. The Koral studio is available on a first-come, first-serve basis with consideration for other participants and time-constraints. A sound system will be provided for the convenience of participants. 15. Talking backstage is not permitted. Violation of this rule may result in disqualification of the participant(s). 16. Parents and non-participants (with the exception of designated individuals and instructors) are not allowed backstage at any time during the festival. 17. Coaching and prompting of dancers is not permitted. Disregarding this rule will result in immediate disqualification. 18. No entry or exit of the theatre during performances. 19. No cameras or video recorders are allowed during the performances; however, they are welcome during the award presentations. 20. Once participants have finished their performance, they must remain backstage lined up and ready to be brought forward for adjudication. 21. Participants are not permitted to approach the awards table at any time. Only instructors or designated group representatives will retrieve adjudication and music from the entry secretary. Adjudications will not be released to dancers. 22. At no time will anyone be allowed to approach the adjudicator to discuss marks, results, or comments. All concerns should be directed to the Festival Coordinators. 23. Any complaints must be made in writing and submitted to the Festival Committee. If complaints are improperly made or the adjudicator is approached, the person/group involved may be asked to leave.

24. The adjudicator s decisions are final. 25. MEDAL STANDINGS: Medals will be awarded to dances as follows: Gold: 90%-100% Silver: 80%-89% Bronze: 70%-79% Dancers categorized as novice will be adjudicated and receive a participation medal as opposed to a medal standing. 26. All entry cancellations must be submitted to the Festival Committee at least one (1) hour prior to the scheduled session. 27. Changes in festival entries may be made until six (6) weeks prior (February 2, 2018) to the festival dates. Exceptions will be considered for medical reasons a doctor s note is required. 28. No foul language will be tolerated. Dancers, instructors, and audience members are expected to behave appropriately. 29. The Festival Committee is not responsible for lost or stolen items. 30. Groups will be held responsible for any damages caused by their dancers and will be liable for paying the damages. 31. The Festival Committee is not responsible for any injury incurred during the festival. DANCE REGIONS Central Ukraine / Bukovyna / Hutsul schyna / Volyn / Zakarpattia / Polissia Character / Lyrical / Pokuttia / Podillia / Kuban / Lemko / Hopak / Other (specify) ADJUDICATION Dancers will be adjudicated based on technique and presentation of their performance. Dancers will be adjudicated as follows: Entrance and Exit Execution of steps Musicality Demonstration of regional specific style Onstage artistry Synchronization/syncopation Professionalism Poise Spatial awareness Use of stage All entries will be awarded a mark by the adjudicator established strictly on his/her expert opinion and our festival s marking criteria. All decisions made by the adjudicator are final. Each participant (aged 6+) will receive a medal based on the awarded mark. Written/CD adjudication will be provided to each entry with the adjudicator s comments for the dancers further development. Medals will be distributed at the completion of each session.

SHOWCASE PERFORMANCE The showcase will take place on Saturday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 each if ordered by January 12, 2018. Tickets purchased after January 12 are $15 each Children under the age of 10 and Festival participants are free of charge. The showcase will consist of the winners of the selected scholarships, all Hopak entries, as well as a dance chosen by participating schools if they did not receive an award. WORKSHOPS Instructor Workshop The Instructor Workshop, led by our adjudicators, will take place on Sunday, March 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Koral Studio) The cost of the workshop is $70.00 per participant and includes admission to the Performance Quality and Breakout sessions. Please complete and submit the Instructor Workshop form with payment by March 1, 2018. Performance Quality Workshop The Performance Quality Workshop, led by our adjudicators, will take place on Sunday, March 18 immediately following Festival end. (Koral Studio) The cost of the workshop is $10.00 per participant (Group instructors are free of charge) Please submit a list of participants along with payment by March 1, 2018 Breakout Sessions Breakout Sessions will be held throughout the weekend and be led by individuals from the general dance community. More information to follow. Workshops are open to anyone free of charge.
