Iowa Assessments 2014 ~Submitted by Jeremy Hissem The Cardinal MS and HS students will be taking the Iowa Assessments during the weeks of January 27-31 and February 3-7. The MS students will be testing five mornings and the HS four mornings. Each testing day, students will start by eating a free breakfast provided by our kitchen staff. We want to make sure the students have plenty of energy so they can concentrate on their assessments. We will test in the morning, because research suggests that students test better and are more alert in the morning. Each testing session will begin with a 20- minute breakfast followed by about an hours worth of testing. A ten-minute brain break will be administered between each test. Once testing is complete for the day, we will hold classes on a shortened schedule so students still have every class. We will follow the 2-hour delay schedule following tests except on Thursday, January 30, 2014 due to HS not testing that day. We will follow a normal schedule on January 30, 2014. We will be sharing last years test scores with each student on Monday, January 27, during advisory so that they can set a goal for themselves. We will also have an Iowa Assessment kick-off assembly on Monday, January 27 from 3:00 3:20. Incentives will be provided to students based on growth from year to year. One incentive will include duct taping a teacher to the wall during lunch for a years worth of growth. These tests are important for students because we make educational decisions based on the data we collect. Many of the Professional Development sessions are planned according to our assessment data. Please help us by making sure your child has a good nights sleep, we also encourage that you talk with your child about trying his/her best. We thank you for your continued support! MS Test Dates: 1-28,1-29, 1-30, 2-5 and 2-6 HS Test Dates: 1-28, 1-29, 2-5 and 2-6 *Each day we will test from 8:10 10:05 and run a 2- hour delay schedule starting at 10:10. (Except 1-30, we will run a normal schedule) High School Testing Schedule Jr. High Testing Schedule

With all of your support we raised a little over $1000 for our school! This is my favorite event and I look forward to many more years! Next up on the PTO calendar is the Carnival! As most of you have noticed we moved the carnival date up this year to February 22 from 5-8 pm at the high school. So when you're tired of being cooped up due to the weather, come and have a fun filled evening with us! We are in the process of making new games for this year! As always we need volunteers to make this a success. We could not do this without all of your help. Cardinal has instilled a new volunteer policy so anyone interested in helping needs to contact the office to get the paperwork. If you plan on helping we ask you do this sooner rather than later. Our next meting will be February 11 at 6:00 pm in the high school cafeteria. We hope you can join us!

First Grade News ~Submitted by Hillary Gatlin First grade has been working really hard on our basic facts in math! We ve started practicing timed tests and working on strategies to help us remember our facts. We ve even learned a fun game to help us practice and now we can play at home! The game is Addition Top-it. Here are the rules: -You need one deck of cards -King, Queen and Jack are 10 s Place the deck of cards in between players. Each player grabs 2 cards and adds them together. Whoever has the higher sum wins that round! Keep playing until all of the cards are gone, whoever has the most cards wins the game! District Speech Contest ~Submitted by McKenna Burke Boy, do we have some involved kids at Cardinal! Shelby Smith, Madison Durflinger, Alyssa Davis, Elizabeth Denniston and Caden Davis started off their day by participating in Archery. Thankfully, our time slots at Wapello allowed them to participate in both Archery and Speech. The Speech process is as follows: Any group or individual that receives a 1 rating at District Speech Contest moves on to State. At State, participants have 3 judges and earning an average 1 rating is the best possible outcome. Those that earn a 1 at State have the chance of being nominated for All State. The judges are limited on how many groups/ individuals they may nominate, and they are choosing the best of the best. Earning a 1 rating at the State level is a high achievement. Nate Steele represented the Radio Broadcasting team at contest and the group earned a 2 rating. He learned how to improve for next year and got some great feedback. The Reader's Theatre group gave a solid performance and earned a 2 rating. It was the first time participating in Large Group Speech for Alyssa, Shelby, Madison and Casey Gustafson. They did a great job! I saw a lot of growth working with Trevor and Caden, and their hard work paid off as they earned a 1 rating and are moving on to State Speech. The Improv team of Logan Rachford, Sam Schmidt, Trevor Albert, Candice Guiter and Elizabeth Denniston is also moving on to State Speech with a 1 rating. Our practices were a bit hodge podged with sports practices, but these kids were in my room working whenever their schedules allowed, and they really took my advice to heart and worked well together as a team. I was so lucky to have two great groups to work with, and can't wait to see their performances at State. These kids made my job easy today and represented Cardinal well in both behavior and performances.

Beethoven is known for his symphonies, piano sonatas, and chamber music. We had a unique opportunity where students could watch a piano player either live or on YouTube to show Beethoven s early and later periods of music. Jessica Nilles, a piano performance major in Oklahoma (originally from Webster City, Iowa) has posted videos on YouTube with a shout out to our Cardinal Students! Students have also been able to learn that Beethoven went deaf in his 20s and couldn t hear most of his later music. I challenged the students to think of how angry you would be if you couldn t hear the awesome music you re writing? They ve listed to his 3rd Symphony - Eroica, his 5th Symphony (you all know it), and his 9th Symphony - Ode to Joy. It s been a great start to the New Year with our vocal music program. The music program has also begun its magazine fundraiser. If you need to renew a subscription find a 5-12th grade musician and we ll help you out. We are selling magazines and cookie dough! Paula Dean Cookie Dough!! Orders are due by February 7th. Thanks for your support and more to come! Band News ~Submitted by Luke Miller Congratulations to six Cardinal students who were selected for the Young Musician s Honor Band Festival at Prairie Creek Intermediate School in Cedar Rapids. They are Lindsay Wilcox on alto saxophone, Loren Snyder on clarinet, Zoie Owings on french horn, Cassandra Sparkman on trombone, Daryun Kreft on Baritone, and Ben Clark on tuba. The purpose of this festival is to provide an opportunity for 1st and 2nd year band students to have an excellent ensemble experience. In addition, students will rehearse and perform in a state-of-the-art concert hall on the College Community campus, conveniently located right off of I380 between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. The date of the festival is February 22. The high school and middle school bands are diving into another busy semester. As the students know, it takes a lot of time and effort to prepare performances that are challenging and entertaining. So far this school year the students have performed 23 times for approximately 7370 people.
