Little Rock Bop Club St. Patrick s Day entertainment for Little Rock Bop Club, March 2010 Nomination of Mike and Kim Nelson to the American Bop Association Hall of Fame 2010

To the electors of the American Bop Association Hall of Fame: Little Rock Bop Club P.O. Box 1057 North Little Rock Arkansas 72115 The Little Rock Bop Club (LRBC) is proud to nominate Mike and Kim Nelson to the American Bop Association Hall of Fame in recognition of their 11 years of exceptional contributions to dance clubs, dancers and to the swing dance community. Mike and Kim have spent the past 11 years contributing to the dance community both locally and across the U.S. with good humor, effective teaching, dance talent and hard work. Mike and Kim met at the club s Valentine dance on Feb. 14, 1999. They were even married on the dance floor, just before a LRBC dance in 2003. For LRBC, Mike served on the board of directors as Parliamentarian in 2003, a position that also requires auditing and inventorying the club s property and equipment. Kim served on the committee planning the club s ten-week 10th Anniversary celebration in 2002, during which both of them planned and appeared in skits and other events leading up to the main anniversary dance and reunion. They also organized the club s 2002 Puttin on the Ritz event, and they have been consistent workers in entertainment and other jobs for Bop on the Lake every year since 2000. They are among the first to pitch in when it is time to use sewing machines, power drills, sanders, paintbrushes, duct tape, glitter and glue and when it is time create choreography for skits, put up decorations or haul out the trash. LRBC is their beloved home base, but they have served the wider community with generosity as well. They fill in as teachers for LRBC s weekly lessons and have been featured workshop instructors for our sister ABA club in Hot Springs, Ark., and volunteered to teach for many community events (see additional information, attached). Their teaching has introduced hundreds of people in Arkansas to swing dance, bringing many of them to LRBC. Since December 2009, while staying just as active in LRBC, Mike and Kim have taken leadership roles in organizing a west coast swing dance club meeting on Saturday nights at a central Arkansas nightclub. Distributing flyers, countless phone calls, negotiating with the owner of the nightclub, developing an e- mail list, teaching free lessons, recruiting other teachers and training the club s disk jockey in music for west coast have resulted in consistent attendance of 40-50 or more dancers each week. Up to half of the Saturday night dancers are discovering a dance club for the first time. Their organizing work continues, establishing another dance opportunity that complements LRBC in bringing new dancers to the community. Exhibition at Summer Boogie Blast, Nashville, 2007 Mike and Kim have been in demand as entertainers for ten years. The couple s exhibitions range from sublimely smooth to sublimely silly. In addition to costumed-and-choreographed exhibitions at LRBC and other dance clubs in Arkansas, Mike and Kim are popular exhibition performers for ABA club conventions across the country (see additional information). They are effective ambassadors of swing dance in the non-dance Nomination to the 2010 ABA Hall of Fame Page 2

community, too, representing and promoting LRBC at community events since 2002 (see additional information). Less obvious to the casual observer is their generosity and approachability on the social dance floor. At home or away, you can often find them in a corner with new dancers who ask for help with basics or experienced dancers who are trying to pick up a new move. If you are a stranger, a visitor or a beginner at an LRBC dance, you will likely be asked to dance by one or the other of the Nelsons. At club or community events, their exhibitions are followed by each of them asking as many attendees as possible to dance during the rest of the event. And at any dance venue across the country, anyone who compliments Mike or Kim on their dancing will likely find him- or herself dancing with one of them during the next song. Teaching dance to ninth graders in Cabot, Arkansas Professionally, Mike is a mental health therapist who counsels elderly clients at a facility in Hot Springs, Arkansas. As a cofounder and director of Keys to Safer Schools, he also helps schools across the U.S. develop programs to prevent violence and bullying. Mike has also used dancing as a form of communication in reaching at-risk youth. Kim is a hairstylist who operates her own five-station salon, successful in the same location for more than 20 years. As a volunteer for the American Cancer Society since 1994, she works privately helping cancer patients with hair and wig styling and cosmetics to boost their spirits, maintain their self-esteem and deal with the effects of cancer treatment. Active in service to the dance community for 11 years and active ambassadors for dance to the wider community, Mike and Kim Nelson consistently give their time and hearts to the promotion and expansion of swing dance both locally and across the country. We are proud to offer them as exemplary nominees to the American Bop Association Hall of Fame, and we are grateful for your consideration.
