Interest in an all Wyoming Fair began in 1886 before Wyoming was a state, but it was not until February 1905 that the State created a Board of State Fair Commissioners, five persons appointed by the governor, to establish and manage an annual state fair in Douglas. The Legislature provided for funding of premiums and awards and empowered the board to make necessary rules and regulations, set admissions and fees and acquired land as needed. Except for some years in the 30 s Depression (1932-1937) and 40 s World War II (1942-1946), the Wyoming State Fair has been held annually ever since. Administration of the Fair is now under the supervision of the State Board of Agriculture and the Wyoming Department of Agriculture. Under the State Board of Agriculture the State Fair became increasingly important as an educational institution, with large participation by boys and girls in organized groups. This participation continues today with 4-H and FFA organizations, both of which include youth in a wide variety of educational activities, projects, demonstrations and competitive livestock events, including horses, beef and dairy cattle, sheep and goats, poultry, swine, rabbits and dogs. Continuing adult education is evident in the large shows for horses, beef and dairy cattle, goats, sheep and swine, as well as the Home Arts, Crafts and Floriculture/Horticulture exhibits and commercial exhibits from the public service sector, various industries in Wyoming and private enterprise. Although the Wyoming State Fair is a major showcase for agriculture, other aspects of western heritage, life and livelihoods in Wyoming are also featured. A year-round attraction on the Fairgrounds is the outstanding Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum, which was originated by the Wyoming Pioneer Association in 1925, but is now supervised and supported by Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites. Following the construction of a new grandstand in 1981, a dormitory and cafeteria, each with a 500-person capacity, were completed in 1983 to benefit youth activities at State Fair Park. In 2002 a comprehensive Master Plan and Capital Improvements Program for the Wyoming State Fair Park was developed. Implementation toward the plan over the next ten years resulted in improved facilities for youth activities, equine and livestock events, along with increased year around usage. The open show facilities for Culinary, Fine Arts and Crafts, Needlework, Floriculture/ Horticulture will encourage extended use of State Fair Park throughout the year. After 100 successful celebrations of the Wyoming State Fair in 2012, we couldn t be happier with and proud of what has happened over the last 107 years. Through the continued support of the State of Wyoming, the City of Douglas, the fine citizens of Wyoming and valued Sponsors, the Wyoming State Fair will thrive for generations to come. It is our promise that we will dedicate ourselves to continuing the traditions we have built through whatever changes the times bring. Over the years the State Fair in Douglas, Wyoming, has been and continues to be a Show Window for Wyoming products.
