Looking for Pig Sponsors! Alcovy FFA is in the process of kicking off our FFA Swine Show Team for the year. We currently have about 15 students who are interested in showing pigs and looking for sponsors. There are three ways you can become a sponsor 1. Sponsor a student for 1/2 of their pig (purchase animal). This would mean that you would pay a flat rate of $200 for the initial purchase of the pig and the student would pay for the feed for the show year. At the end of the season (February 2017), the pig would be split 50/50 between you and the student. You would also only pay half of the processing fee at the end of the show year (in February and roughly $55-70, depending on weight). 2. Sponsor a student for 1/2 of their pig (feed). This would mean that the student would purchase the pig and you would pay for feed for the pig for the show season. Feed varies in cost. Currently we are buying a 50-pound bag for $15. A bag will last a pig roughly one week (longer in the beginning of the season and a little less in February). You would only pay half of the processing fee at the end of the show year (in February and roughly $55-70, depending on weight). 3. Fully sponsor a student This would mean that you would purchase the pig for $200 and would buy the feed for the pig as well. The pig would belong to you and the student would show the pig. In February, the pig would be yours to take and do whatever you'd like. If you'd like to send it off with the others, we would handle that for you. If you chose this option, you would be responsible for the processing fee at the end of the show year (in February and roughly $100-120, depending on weight). Our pigs will vary in weight from 250-285 pounds in February. You could expect to get roughly 75% or 200 pounds (100-140 pounds of pork when split), of meat and have it cut however you would like. Livestock projects are so much more than just having an animal. Our students are learning hands-on the importance of teamwork, responsibility, work ethic, leadership and much more. These projects can become expensive for students when you take into account the cost of travel, hotels, show equipment, etc. Without the help of sponsors, our Show Team would not exist. If this is something that you would be interested in or if you know someone who may be interested, please let contact Ms. Bullock at bullock.cecily@newton.k12.ga.us. With the rising cost of meat, this ends up being an awesome deal! As always, thank you for your continued support of Alcovy FFA!
