PRESIDENTS MESSAGE DECEMBER 2015 As we are hitting full stride at the Chinese Center into our 3rd month of operation this year, it has been a pleasure for Randy and I to see that everything is running smoothly like a well oiled machine with everyone's help and dedication. I have seen a lot of new faces in all areas of the Center and this means that we are growing as a family. Randy and I are still trying to meet everyone as we stop by all the activity groups that we have within the Chinese Center, and to say hi. If we have not had a chance to say hi or chat, please stop us, as we would appreciate any input you have to help move the Center forward. In the first three months since the Center has opened there have been a lot of activities outside of the normal activities within the Center as you have read and experienced from this and previous newsletters. For the next few months we are also busy with two very important fundraisers for the Chinese Center. They are the Applebee's breakfast in December, for which we are still selling tickets, and our yearly banquet in March, for which we have just started selling tickets this month. Please stop by the front desk and inquire about these events and other upcoming events. These events should not be missed. And where else can you go where the Board of Directors serve you breakfast at Applebee s, help celebrate the Year of the Monkey, and ring in the new year with good luck, fortune and health with your second family from the Chinese Center? We have been learning the Chinese culture at the Center, serving the community with Chinese educations, arts and language, and finally, let us celebrate the holidays with your CCLI family! Such a cute couple! Our seniors celebrated an early Thanksgiving lunch by cooking and bringing a multitude of food for all of us to enjoy. So much food! Don t even think of dieting when you come to one of these meetings. Thank you to Warren and Ted for entertaining our seniors with their guitar playing and for their accompaniment to our seniors singing. We re looking forward to our next meeting on December 2nd! Mona Ng Warren Chew, Elle & Ted Ho Jan and Bo Tse BLOOMINGDALE S SINGLE S DAY ON NOV. 11TH Many people were wondering what does CCLI and Bloomingdale s have in common. The answer was simple: the majority of Bloomingdales customers are of Asian descent. They wanted to acknowledge their support by having an Asian cultural theme. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Cameron McRae, an Assistant Public Relations Manager at Bloomingdale s, who inquired about our service for Single s Day Single Day is a day to shop for yourself before you start shopping for others for the holidays. Cameron requested performances that really express the Chinese culture. We decided to provide three performances: the Zhouma Dance, Jasmine Flower Dance, and the Lion Dance. Each performance was magically performed and drew Ah s and Wows from the spectators and staff gathered in front of Bloomingdales. This event was truly special as we develop a new relationship with a big chain department store. I want to thank all the volunteers in making this event as easy as possible. Stay tune for a special shopping event solely for CCLI members and guests. 6
CCLI INTERFAITH-ETHNIC THANKSGIVING SERVICE ON NOVEMBER 20TH The members of the Center attended a PreThanksgiving service hosted by the Officers and Trustees of Temple Emanuel of Great Neck, New York. We were joined by five other organizations representing different religious faiths and ethnicities. All the members from the various groups came together to celebrate the blessings bestowed upon us. We ate a delicious dinner and many photographs were taken of all the participants. After dinner we joined everyone in the sanctuary of the Temple. Representatives from the different organizations gave their Thanksgiving message on the dais with the common theme of peace, respect and striving for a better quality of life for the human race. Mona Ng gave thanks for the sunshine, flowers, fruits and all the bounties we have in America. Anthony D Urso, member of CCLI and an Officer of Order of Sons of Italy in America- Cellini Lodge #2206 mentioned we are made in God s image and all of us are brothers and sisters. Dr. Liao representing Tzu Chi Foundation stated that millions of victims who suffered disasters received help from compassionate people. Dr. Mohammad Hussain of Long Island Muslim Society prayed that people should forsake bigotry and prejudice, a poison that sickens the human race. Adam Herman from Temple Emanuel mentioned it is important to provide financial assistance when necessary to the less fortunate. Rev. Natalie Fenimore, Julia Shield and Father Patel from Unitarian Universalist, St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church and St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, respectively, gave words of prayer for this occasion. Edward Chung passionately reached out to the audience that people should do good work to improve human conditions. Musical programs of vocalists and musicians were provided by Temple Emanuel, St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church and CCLI. Ms. Wen Ling Cheng, a friend of Chinese Center on Long Island, a soprano, sang and played the piano to the audience. Among her selections was a popular song My heart glows as bright as the Moon. We thank Robert Wong and Warren Chew who took many photographs and videos. In addition, Robert e-mailed various photographs to the different organizations that participated in Friday s program. Of course we thank all the Center members who came and supported this event. Wen Ling Cheng Edward Chung 7
