San Francisco Police Department Memorandum To: Captain Timothy Falvey #1071 Commanding Officer / APPROVED YES / NO Tactical Unit / El From: Sergeant Jennife udoroff #1673 LI Mounted Unit Special Operations su,h E' El Date: Tuesday, October 04, 2016 Subject: Request to Accept Donation of New Police Horse Issue: Should the SFPD Mounted Unit accept the gift of a new police horse from the SF SPCA? Discussion: The Mounted Unit of the Tactical Company has been evaluating a 6 year old Quarter Horse, Leroy, for the past six weeks. Leroy has been evaluated by several of our officers, our trainer and me. We believe that he has responded well to the training and will be a much needed asset to the Mounted Unit. Leroy has been ridden in a variety of settings, both inside the park and on the City's streets, and he has performed well. I believe with continued training he will be able to perform the duties of an equine member of the San Francisco Police Department's Mounted Unit. Dr. Robert Steere, D.V.M of Artaurus Veterinary Clinic of Petaluma has evaluated Leroy and Dr. Steere has told me that he saw nothing that would exempt Leroy from the type of police work he is expected to perform. Leroy is currently owned by Lynda Lake of Stockton. Lynda has agreed to sell Leroy to the SF SPCA for the amount of $7,500.00. The SF SPCA has been a great supporter of our unit and has agreed to purchase Leroy and then donate him to us. The SF SPCA found a City resident willing to donate the funds needed to purchase Leroy and she only requested that we honor her late husband with a sign on Leroy's stall in memory. Conclusion: It has been determined that Leroy will be a good police horse and the SF SPCA is requesting to donate him to the SFPD Mounted Unit. Recommendation: I am recommending that we accept the generous donation from a City resident, through the SF SPCA, of Leroy, a 6 year old Quarter Horse, worth $7,500.00. SFPD-68 (03/89) *
