Message from Honourable Rachel Notley Premier of Alberta On behalf of the Government of Alberta, welcome to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as you participate in the 2018 Alberta Winter Games. Alberta s young athletes represent the future of sport in our province. You have all worked incredibly hard to earn the honour of representing your region at these games. The perseverance and commitment you have shown will serve you well not only in your dedicated sport, but also throughout your entire life. Events like the Alberta Winter Games contribute greatly to our province s quality of life, and inspire all Albertans to engage in winter activities to lead healthy, active lives. These games are also an excellent opportunity for our athletes to showcase their skills, challenge their own personal bests, and create lifelong memories. Special thanks to the supportive families, friends, volunteers, and organizers who create a wonderful 2018 Alberta Winter Games experience. Message from the Mayor Welcome to Wood Buffalo! We are excited to have you with us for the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. Although perhaps best known as the heart of Canada s oil sands, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is one of the largest and most diverse in the country. Located in northcentral Alberta, and extending to the boundaries of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, the region offers over 66,000 km2 of natural beauty to explore. Throughout history, people have come here in search of their dreams. We hope that you will also reach your goals and find success here as you compete with other top young athletes and coaches from across Alberta. The next four days are a celebration of sport and the pursuit of excellence -- and so much more. This is a special opportunity for you to enjoy new experiences, demonstrate respect and fair play, and build strong teams and friendships. We hope that the Games inspire you to be the best you can be and that the memories you make here will last a lifetime. Congratulations on being chosen to take part in the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. This is a big step in your athletic career. We are thrilled to share this experience with you and to join your family and friends in cheering you on from the stands. Greetings from the MLAs Dear 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games Athletes. As MLAs for this region, we join in the excitement of welcoming all of you - along with coaches and parents - to this beautiful place we call home for the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. For the next three days, our region will be alive with the spirit of competition as nearly 3,000 young athletes strive to do their best in their selected sports. Our region has a rich sports history, and we host first-class games and tournaments in world class venues. The positive impacts of sports are numerous. Sports teaches you life lessons: It teaches patience strategy. how to be a leader and a follower That it s okay to make mistakes How to set goals The success of hard work How to win with class. and lose with dignity And that life isn t always fair. Sports also brings a community together and these Games are an example of that. Thank you to the Alberta Sport Connection and all of its dedicated staff and sponsors for helping make such events as the Alberta Winter Games possible and helping young athletes reach their athletic potential. Athletes Don't Forget All personal belongings and toiletries must be packed in a single piece of luggage Pillow Sleeping bag (no air mattresses) Sporting equipment (ensure all appropriate covers & bags are used) Water bottle Lock (for lockers) Towel, facecloth & bathing suit (for Showers) Pro-wrap and tape (if required for athletic therapy) Zone ID hoodie & toque (required to be worn during Opening Ceremonies under winter coat) Clothing for cold weather (outdoor Opening Ceremonies) winter boots, hat, mittens, scarves and layers, including snow pants, base layers etc. *DRESS WARM - AN OUTDOOR OPENING CEREMONIES WILL BE COLD Spending money for souvenirs Remember to clearly identify all your personal belongings and leave your valuables at home. Valuables will be brought at your own risk! 9

Zone Chef de Mission The Zone Chefs are Alberta Sport Connection representatives for each of the eight Zones that coordinate their respective Zone Teams. During the Games they work in partnership with Host Volunteers to assist athletes, coaches and chaperones in all aspects of the Games. Athletes, Coaches or Chaperones should contact their Zone Chef in the event of: Changes required at In Person registration (including accommodations) Late arrival at In Person Registration Illness/injury causing withdrawal from competition of an athlete, coach, or chaperone Personal interest stories on individual participants Change in transportation request (to and from the Games) Lost accreditation tag Sport protests Zone Chef will contact you in the event of: Absenteeism from the Athlete Village, or late entry Discipline issues Important messages Media interest Parents, or family who wish to contact athletes, coaches, or chaperones during the Games can also contact the Zone Chef directly. Zone Map Alberta is divided into eight Zones for the Alberta Games. Each Zone is assigned a colour for identification during the Games. Don t forget to wear your Zone coloured hoodie to support your team s efforts throughout the Games! Code of Conduct The Code of Conduct identifies the standards of behaviour required of all participants while traveling to, participating at and returning from Alberta Games. All athletes, coaches and chaperones shall: 1. Represent their Zone and their sport as goodwill ambassadors with commitment, dignity, personal integrity and within the spirit of good sportsmanship at all times both in and out of competition. 2. Show respect for: a. The members of their own team and of the entire contingent representing their Zone b. The members of all teams competing from other Zones c. The rules and standards set down by the Provincial Sport Organization and the Host Community d. The Mission Staff e. The official s decision f. The people of the Host Community including staff, volunteers, spectators, local business personnel, etc. 3. Abide by the accommodation policy, which stipulates that all athletes, coaches and chaperones shall: a. Reside in their Games accommodations for all three nights of competition b. Abide by the 11 p.m. curfew throughout the entire Games 4. Attend the Opening Ceremonies for the Games, wearing the Zone apparel provided by the Alberta Sport Connection. 5. No alcohol, or illegal drug substances shall be consumed by Alberta Games athletes, coaches, chaperones, or officials. No tobacco, alcohol, or any illegal drug substance may be brought into, or consumed in any Athlete Village, Games venue or Games vehicle designed for athlete transportation. In addition, all coaches and chaperones shall: 6. Set a positive example for their athletes by complying with all policies, rules and standards of conduct. Act in the best interest of the athlete, avoiding all unsafe and unacceptable circumstances and seeking advice of appropriate medical personnel before deciding if an injured athlete is to resume competition. 7. Supervise and be responsible for the conduct of their athletes at all times during the Alberta Winter Games. 12

Discipline The Alberta Sport Connection will work in partnership with the Host Community to ensure that provision is made for a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants in the Alberta Games. All participants are expected to respect the rights of others and abide by the rules and regulations established for the Athletes Village, the ASC Policies and Procedures and the Alberta Games Code of Conduct. Any and all violations of the Code of Conduct will be brought to the attention of the Mission Staff and respective Chef de Mission. The Host Community will work in partnership with the Safety & Security Portfolio and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of all participants and to address matters of unlawfulness. In any situation involving the disciplinary committee, a letter will be sent to the Provincial Sport Organization and, if applicable, to the parents of the participant involved. 13

In Person Registration All Participants, Coaches and Chaperones are required to attend In Person Registration. Location: Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre (9908 Penhorwood Street, Fort McMurray) Date: Friday, February 16th (12:30 p.m. 4 p.m.) All local athletes are encouraged to register between 12:30 p.m. - 1 p.m. in order to avoid the congestion of external transportation participants. What Happens during In Person Registration? 1. Upon arrival, a Games Ambassador will board the motorcoach and provide a brief description of the Registration Centre and process for registering. 2. Athletes participating in the following sports will be required to remove their sport equipment off the external transportation coach when they arrive and take them to the awaiting venue transport vehicles: a. Biathlon - rifles & skis b. Hockey (male) - equipment bags & sticks c. Hockey (female) - equipment bags & sticks d. Cross Country - skis e. Archery - bows & arrows f. Fencing - foils, epis, sabres g. Ringette - equipment bags & sticks 3. All accreditation tags will be sorted by sport. Once you arrive at the Registration Centre, please see the volunteers at your sport table and pick up your accreditation tag. THIS TAG IS VERY IMPORTANT - YOU NEED THIS TO EAT, SLEEP AND COMPETE. 4. Check your tag for errors. If there is an error (spelling, sport, athlete village assignment etc.), please head to the corrections table. If you require further assistance, see your Zone Chef. 5. Pick up your swag bag as you exit the field house on the way back to the motorcoach or private vehicle. 6. All participants will get back onto the motorcoach or private vehicle they arrived on and be dropped off at their Athlete Village. Please communicate with the Games Ambassador regarding your assigned Athlete Village. 7. Check in to your Athlete Village and prepare for outdoor Opening Ceremonies! Internal bus shuttles will transport participants from Athlete Village to Opening Ceremonies - DRESS WARM! 14

Sport Equipment Storage Biathlon Rifles and cross-country skis will be off loaded upon arrival at the In Person Registration Centre. Rifles and skis will be stored at the Fort McMurray Gun Range, host venue for biathlon, before and after competition. Archery & Fencing Bows, arrows, foils, épées and sabres will be off loaded upon arrival at the In Person Registration Centre. They will be transported and stored securely at their respective sport venues. Hockey (Male & Female) & Ringette Upon arrival at the In Person Registration Centre, hockey and ringette bags will be off loaded and put on a truck designated for their sport and zone. The bags will then be transported to their assigned change room at their respective sport venue. Cross Country Cross country equipment will be off loaded and put on a truck assigned to cross country. Equipment will be tuned and left on-site at the sport venue - Birchwood Trails. Alpine Skiing, Freestyle Skiing & Snowboarding This equipment will be stored at the assigned Athlete Villages. Tuning of this equipment will also take place at the Athlete Villages. Other Sport Equipment Racquets, skates, etc. will be stored with the athlete overnight and between competition at the Athlete Villages and transported with athletes on internal shuttles to and from sport venues. 15

Athlete Village Services Medical Overnight security will be trained with basic first aid in the event of a medical incident. During the hours of 11:00 pm - 6:00 am, an on-call nurse will be available for non-urgent medical incidents. Urgent transportation will be provided via ambulance. Non-Urgent transportation will be provided by overnight security patrol cars. If there is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention, call 911. Athlete Lounges Each Village will have an area designated as a lounge. This is the only area in the Village where food can be consumed. Opposite gender coaches can also host team meetings in this space as long as the Village Supervisor is present. Please check with the Village Information Desk for additional activities and information. Lost and Found Each Village will have a lost and found box by the Village Information Desk. On departure day, these items will be picked up by the Security team and taken to the luggage area at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MacDonald Island Park (MIP). Please check this box in an attempt to locate any items that may be misplaced. Post Opening Ceremonies Snack Following The Opening Ceremonies on Friday, February 16th, there will be a light snack provided for each participant at their Athlete Village. The snack will include half of a wrap, fruit, granola bar and drink. The snack will be provided in the Athlete Lounge, as no food is permitted in the classrooms. Coaches/Chaperones are expected to supervise their athletes during this time. Please clean up all garbage in the lounge prior to leaving the area. Shower Schedule There will be a shower schedule posted at the Village Information Desk. Please note your designated shower location and suggested times. Athletes are encouraged to shower at their earliest convenience following competition, unless otherwise stated. Below is a chart confirming the venue that each sport/gender will be showering at. 17

ATCO Torch Relay ATCO Torch Relay Opening Ceremony - 2 p.m. Poplar Crescent (along Franklin Avenue, Fort McMurray) We officially kick off the Games weekend with the ATCO Torch Relay. The torch will be lit in a ceremony at Poplar Crescent before it travels through the downtown core and enters MacDonald Island Park. The final leg of the relay will take place during the Opening Ceremonies starting at 7 p.m. in the Shell Place Baseball Stadium at MIP. Join all of our honoured ATCO Torch Relay athletes in celebrating the official start to the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. IT'S GAMES TIME! 21

2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games Opening Ceremonies: presented by ATCO Friday, February 16, 2018 at 7 p.m. (pre show: 6:30 p.m.) Marshalling - 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Shell Place Indoor Turf Field House at MIP All Athletes must make their way to the Shell Place Indoor Turf Field House by 6 p.m. What should I bring? Please make sure you have the following items with you: Your accreditation. Warm clothing - remember that the Opening Ceremonies are outdoors and you will need to dress accordingly for Northern Alberta winter conditions. Zone ID Hoodie & Toque - required to be worn during Opening Ceremonies. DO NOT bring any additional items unless you can carry them on you. There will not be anywhere to store your items and you will not be returning to the marshalling area after the Opening Ceremonies. What will happen at athlete marshalling? Volunteers will assist in getting all participants grouped into their zones. You will also receive zone-specific items needed for the Opening Ceremonies. It is important that everyone listen to the directions that will be announced so that we can get the parade of athletes into the stadium in a safe and timely manner. Once the parade of athletes begins, you will follow a Games Ambassador and your Zone banner to the Opening Ceremonies field. 22

The ceremonies will close off with the final leg of the ATCO Torch Relay and the lighting of the Alberta Games Cauldron. 23

What happens after the Opening Ceremonies? Follow the directions of the announcer and volunteers who will lead you out of the stadium to your buses. REMEMBER: make sure you board the correct bus - look at the Village location identified on the front of your accreditation tag and note all signage. Pick up of Zone ID will take place February 8 or 9 at designated location. Sport Technical Meeting (if required by Sport) Friday, February 16 MacDonald Island Park (Suncor Community Leisure Centre/Shell Place) immediately following Opening Ceremonies. Technical meetings are for the Zone Head Coach, Sport Head Official and Sport Chair. You will be contacted directly regarding the details of your meeting by your Provincial Sport Coordinator. Closing Awards Presentation Location: Nexen Energy Field House #1, Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MIP Monday, February 19 Time: 2 p.m. All zones will come together one last time before the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games are officially closed. We want to celebrate the new friendships, great experiences, and the accomplishments of all athletes during the weekend. Three awards will be handed out during this time: Minister s Cup - The Minister s Cup is awarded to the zone showing the greatest improvement from one Alberta Games to the next (since 2016 in Medicine Hat); Alberta Cup - The Alberta Cup is awarded to the zone achieving the most medal points for sports in the Games. (Three points are awarded for each gold medal, two points for each silver medal, and one point for each bronze medal.) Spirit of Sport Award - The Alberta Spirit of Sport Award is presented to the zone which best demonstrates the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit and cooperation on and off field. When the Closing Awards are complete, please follow the directions of the announcer and volunteers to pick up your luggage, if you have not already done so. Transportation External Transportation (Arrivals) : Friday, February 16 Participants will arrive at the In Person Registration Centre, located at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre via the external bus system or by personal vehicle from various locations within the eight Zones of the province. Following registration, athletes, coaches and chaperones will re-board their external Zone bus or personal vehicle and be taken to their assigned Athlete Village. A Games Ambassador will board the bus with you to assist in answering any of your questions. Internal Transportation: Friday, February 16 - Monday, February 19 Daily schedules will be posted at the designated entrance/exit at each Athlete Village. Each day buses will transport athletes, coaches and chaperones from their Athlete Village to the Food Centre and their respective sport venues and/or special events. All internal buses will be clearly marked throughout the Games to identify where each bus is going (Athlete Village, Sport Venue, Food Centre, etc.). External Transportation (Departure): Monday, February 19 Participants will put their luggage in a designated storage area located at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MIP according to their zone bus number prior to breakfast on Monday morning. Throughout the morning, participants will be requested to load their luggage onto their assigned Zone bus as the buses arrive in preparation for departure. Upon completion of competition and the Closing Awards, participants will board their assigned Zone bus and attendance will be taken prior to departure. 29

Dress - Casual Shuttles will be available throughout the evening for Technical Officials back to their hotels. Coaches must travel back to the Village with their athletes via internal transportation. Lost & Found There will be lost and found boxes at the following locations: 1. All Sport venues - multiple boxes at Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MIP 2. All Athlete Villages 3. Food Centre 4. Polyclinic 5. Internal Transportation buses During the Games, please check the boxes daily if you have lost an item. Alert your assigned Zone Chef and they will inform security of any particularly valuable items that have gone missing. On the last day of competition, Monday, February 19, all items will be gathered from the lost and found locations and be moved to Luggage Storage at the SCLC. This is your last chance to claim your items in person. Following Athlete Departure, all remaining items will be moved to the Games Office to be held for 30 days. Following March 19, items will be donated, discarded, or turned over the the RCMP. 32

Medical All sporting venues will be staffed with medical personnel during competition hours. All medical volunteers will be identified by a red long sleeve shirt and medical arm band. Beside each field of play, a first aid post will be set up. Additionally, each venue will have a private treatment tent, provided by Finning, if further examination is required.
