Inter IIT Sports Meet 2016 1st - 5th October 12th to 19th December Campus Press Release Inter-IIT Sports Meet, an annual inter-collegiate sports event, has distinguished itself as one of the largest tournaments of its kind wherein students from all IITs participate. Inter IIT has been a symbol of synergy of the top technological institutions of India and a celebration of the vibrant sporting culture and spirit of sportsmanship. This year IIT Kanpur has the privilege of hosting the 51st edition of the Inter IIT sports meet and is all set to reach hitherto unprecedented heights this year. The meet comprises a total of 12 sports, namely Athletics, Aquatics, Basketball, Badminton, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Table Tennis, Tennis, Squash, Volleyball and Weightlifting. The entire meet will be conducted in three phases: the 4-day Aquatics Meet (2nd-5th October), the 8-day Main Meet (12th-19th December) and finally the Staff Meet (20th-25th December). Theme: Field of Dreams For any sportsperson, the holy grail is the Championship Trophy. The immense satisfaction that comes with standing on the dais with the winner's trophy in hand and the crowd cheering for you ecstatically, applauding with immense respect is ethereal! Such a moment is the dream of any sportsperson alive. This year, IIT Kanpur shall be the Field of Dreams for all our participants. This shall be the place where all their efforts culminate, all the long hours of toil and practice shall manifest themselves on the scoreboard. In this arena, grit, determination, team spirit, individual brilliance and the spirit of sportsmanship shall unfold. Official Logo The logo of Inter IIT 16 embodies the desire to perform and conquer, subtly blended with a passion for the game. The shield encompasses the logo that portrays an urge to fight and grab the General Championship, a desire of all IITs. The Peacock Feather embedded in the centre has multiple undertones. Peacocks are ubiquitous in IIT Kanpur. Graceful and vibrant, the king of birds is a source of pride and delight. Further, the peacock signifies beauty and sanctity, the joy of playing and the emotions of those who cherish and adore sports. The adrenaline rush of the players resonates with the peacock dancing to the rhythm of rain in its field of dreams. The players strive to conquer and vanquish in their quest for supremacy. The opening feathers of the peacock symbolize the unveiling of the player s potential in full limelight. Furthermore, the peacock represents resurrection and immortality of the passion and vigour ingrained in the IITs for the Inter IIT Sports Meet, the spirit of vibrancy, competition and sportsmanship that shall never die!
Official Mascot This Inter IIT shall play host to a very special guest, primarily a resident of one of our largest neighbouring nations, he is a gentle giant - imposing in appearance, yet gentle at heart. With his huge physique, he is surprisingly athletic, challenging all notions of a fit athlete. He climbs with aplomb and loves to roam, mostly all by himself. He exemplifies how anyone can play immaterial of his appearance; immaterial of how others judge him to be. He is symbolic of our motto, I_KAN, and proves that there is nothing called inability. If one has the will, one has the way and indeed one can, come what may!
Logistics Board Meeting: The first board meeting of the 51st Inter IIT Sports Meet 2016 was held on 11th-12th August at IIT Kanpur with officials and student representatives from all participating IITs. Pools were decided based on lottery and released at the earliest. The brands of sports equipments to be used during the meet were finalized. Rules and regulations were overviewed and other general information regarding the preparations of the meet was disseminated. The fields and courts were inspected by all IITs and reported to be suitable for the meet. Agendas proposed by different IITs were discussed and resolved.
Trophies: The holy grail of all the contingents is the Championship Trophy. Nothing beats the hair-raising moment of standing on the dias with the gold medal on one s neck along with the entire contingent and raising the Championship Trophy, to the applause of the entire crowd. Other than the Combined General Championship Trophy, all other trophies are rolling and are passed on from the previous winners to the new winners. The design and procurement for this year s Combined General Championship Trophy is in progress.
Medals: If trophies are the holy grail of the contingents, medals are the holy grail of each and every sports person participating in any competition. The immense satisfaction in wearing a medal on one s neck and standing on the podium, to the applause of the entire contingent and the gallery, is ethereal. The design and look of the medals have been finalised and hopefully it will be appreciated by all.
Certificates: Certificates are an official recognition of one s participation and excellence in a competition. They are of immense value for a participant and are an integral part of any event. The signatures by the authorities are a proof of the authenticity of the concerned person s achievements. The certificates have been printed and we hope the design, formal yet attractive, will be appreciated by all.
Souvenirs: Customized Wildcraft bags and a brochure will be given to all the participants as a souvenir of this year s Inter IIT meet so that they remember this Inter IIT as their most memorable ever. Souvenirs are an important part of any event, they are responsible for the host IITs reputation as an organisation and gives a major boost to the public image of the host IIT. Wildcraft bags are quite durable and the bag looks pretty decent. Brochure design and content has been carefully designed to address to the urgent requirements of the participants. We hope our souvenirs will be appreciated by all and the participants will leave our campus with a nice impression of IIT Kanpur.
Aquatics Meet Opening Ceremony: The Opening Ceremony is scheduled on 1st October. Mrs. Bula Choudhary an Arjuna awardee, Padma Shri awardee, former India national women's swimming champion and elected as current MLA in May 2016 in West Bengal will be gracing the event as the Chief Guest. She is the first woman to cross seven seas. She twice swam the English Channel first in 1989 and again in 1999. She was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1990. She was also awarded the Padma Shri. Dr. NK Pandey one of the first sports officer of IITK (appointed in 1963) will be present at the event. Dr. Kripal Singh, a former sports officer of IITK and a famous sports enthusiast, will also grace us with his presence at the event. Miss Trishla Singh, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur, was the best swimmer consecutively thrice for the Aquatics Meet 2003 4 5, she is also a national level diver. They will be present as Distinguished Guests. The opening ceremony will be organized at the Swimming Pool with a professional diving show to entertain the guests. We hope that these events will motivate the participants to put up a stellar performance.. Events: Matches will start from 2nd October and will go on till 5th of October. 30 officials from Swimming Federation of India will be coming to oversee the matches. During the meet the participants will be accommodated in Hall 12, and will have their messing facility there itself. A fresh fruit juice stall will be installed in front of the Swimming Pool during the meet for the participants. A Gala Dinner will also be organized for the participants on the 4th of October. The final day will witness the closing ceremony, after which the participants will hang out on the pool and interact with the other participants before bidding them adieu. Schedule Informals: Fun events will be organized for the participants on 2nd and 3rd evening where they can relax and interact with other IIT participants. Initiatives Live Screening and Commentary As per logistics and requirement, Live Screening and Commentary will be done for various of the matches. The entire Aquatics Meet will be streamed live on YouTube and local cable channels of the campus community with the help of Media Center, IITK. Certain high profile matches of the IIT Kanpur contingent will also be screened live near the Swimming Pool. We hope that with this initiative we can reach out to the entire campus community. This will also prevent overcrowding and chaos at the venues for the competitions. Pan IIT Blood Donation Camp Blood cannot be manufactured in factories; it can only come from generous donors. To cater to this demand, Inter IIT Sports Meet has launched Pan IIT Blood Donation Camps with an unparalleled objective of solving the problem of blood shortage in India. A Blood Donation & Mini Health Check-up Camp in collaboration with Raktarpan, IIT Kanpur was organized in IIT Kanpur on 30th and 31st of July. Similar camps in collaboration with BloodConnect are scheduled to be organized in all the IITs starting from October till November. Current target is to have over 7000 donations as a part of this initiative.
#IamTeamIndia This was a publicity campaign supporting India s campaign at the Rio this Olympics. This time, India saw its highest ever representation at the quadrennial world championships and expectations were inevitably high. Posters detailing and motivating the Indian contingent were released regularly. Highlights of podium finishes were released as early as possible. Further a campus wide signature campaign wishing luck to our sportspersons was also organized. Active Social Campaigns and Online Presence Inter IIT 16 has had a very vibrant and active online presence. The Facebook page and Instagram handle have been made extremely active and queries sent to us in form of messages to the Facebook page have been replied to within minutes. A centralised YouTube channel and Twitter handle has been introduced. For the first time a rolling website and app have been introduced to be used by the future hosts. App and website will have live results and player profiles, so that teams get instant updates and can analyse their opponents.
IITK Futsal League The Inter IIT Team for the first time in the history of IIT Kanpur organized a Futsal league for IITK junta. The venue for the event was the skating rink in front of Hall-3. The league consisted of 25 teams and registration was done on first come first basis. The league saw some crazy Futsal action, and is expected to be organized annually from now onwards. I_KAN Photoshoot: As only 100 days were left for the main meet, a photo shoot was organized in collaboration with the P.E. Section. A combined P.E. session was called and a formation of I_KAN was formed and a skyphoto of the same was taken. With just 100 days to go for InterIIT 16, the aim of the photo was to motivate the participants to run an extra mile, practice an extra hour, play an extra set and compete with a spirit like never before.
Underwater photo-shoot: We will be making it possible for the students to capture their joyous moments underwater. There are open slots scheduled where the campus community can come and the organizing team will take their pictures underwater. The same will be done for all the participants of the upcoming Aquatics Meet.
Arm wrestling Challenge: Everyone can be strong and fit, provided they are prepared to work for it. Inter IIT Sports Meet launched a fitness initiative asking everyone to have a match of arm wrestling and upload a video, to demonstrate their strength. The motivation behind the same was to make people start working on their fitness and health. "Tour de Force": The Inter IIT organising team, in collaboration with Games and Sports Council, IITK, is organizing a Mini Marathon (Men - 10km, Women - 5km) as an initiative to popularize the meet within the campus. This will also provide the required anticipation in the campus junta to get them prepared to witness their first Inter IIT sports meet on our home grounds.
