Est. 1994 Not For Profit, Not For Power, Just For Dancing Every Hour Sept-Oct 2015 Meet the 2015-2017 DCHDC Board Congratulations to our DCHDC Board of Directors for 2015-2017 (pictured below). Our new Board takes office on September 1, 2015. Best wishes for a successful and rewarding term as you lead our club into the future. We would like to thank everyone who stepped up to volunteer and serve on the new Board of Directors for 2015 to 2017. Our Board members volunteer countless hours working behind the scenes so that MMATB, New Year s Eve, monthly dances and weekly venues continue to run smoothly. We do have members that care about the DC Hand Dance Club and we appreciate the efforts of all who help make this club a success. We would likely not have so many places to go and have fun dancing together without our dance club and the volunteers that help make it happen. This club would not exist without the help of volunteers. To contact a board member you can send an email to the following club email address at DCHandDancers@dchandanceclub.net or contact them in person at a dance. A Thank You from the Incoming President Letter from the Outgoing President Thank you to the membership for their confidence in your next Board of Directors. The DC Hand Dance Club is a very special organization. It was formed to preserve our unique style of dance, but has developed into much MORE! We have become a dance family, and through the years we have supported each other in good times and bad. We continue to invite new dancers to join us and welcome returning dancers back to our dance family. At all our events it is the fun and social interaction on and off the dance floor that makes us such an extraordinary group. We will be working hard to keep us dancing at our various venues and special events. Talk with your new Board Members, ask questions, make suggestions, this is your club. Our job is to continue making our events the best they can be New Year s Eve, Meet Me At The Beach and maybe another Fall Fling. Every suggestion may not be possible, but the idea may lead to something even better, so share! Personally, I wish to the thank everyone for their support and kind words. Many of you have already volunteered to help with various activities, thank you and we will be calling on you. See You On The Dance Floor Pam Vann, Incoming President Well gang, the time has come for me to step down as the DC Hand Dance Club President and turn the reins over to Pam Vann. I will still be an active member as 1st Vice President, and I will still be seen at our venues. I will continue to be a DJ (for the greatest dance club around), and will continue to schedule the DJ s. I am leaving the Presidency in very capable hands, and if the first Board meeting was any indication of just how the club will be run in the next two years, you all are in for a treat. I will never be able to express just how wonderful the Board has been in these few lines, and will not attempt to thank everyone individually in this short note. The last two years have been a group effort, which also includes all the members of the DC Hand Dance Club. In closing, I would like to thank everyone on my Board and in the club for their continued support during the last two years. My Board was unbelievable, and we had a great time at every Board meeting. The hard work by all was evident from the great turnout at all the events from the club members. Thank you again for the privilege of serving as President and, now let s get this party started! Ron Carroll, Outgoing President You can dance anywhere, even if only in your heart. ~ Author Unknown Page 2 2015 / September October Newsletter

Both are enjoying their retirements after long careers and are still enjoying the hand dancing scene. Jimmy and Carolyn celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in June. Congratulations to the both of them! Both grew up in the Washington area and met when Carolyn was fourteen years of age. Carolyn remembered the exact time and place when she met Jimmy. She described to me that she was introduced to Jimmy at the Queenstown Apartments by a mutual friend. Must be love! Both graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. Carolyn continued her education at the University of Maryland with a degree in education. She went on for a career as a school teacher in Prince George s County and Calvert County. She retired from teaching after a long career. Jimmy worked at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission in their construction division and retired after a 27 and a half years of service. He later operated a lawn service company that he called Jim Dandy s Lawn Service. He enjoys working in the great outdoors after his retirement from WSSC but saw fit to fully retire recently. Now they spend their time at their homes in Dunkirk, Ocean City and Naples, Florida. Family is the center point of their lives. They have two sons and four grandsons who all live locally so they all enjoy family activities together. Family being the center of their lives, Jimmy coached his sons in baseball, basketball and football during their growing up years. They were instrumental in forming the Dunkirk Warriors in earlier years. Jimmy has even had a part in coaching his grandsons in various sports. Their eldest grandson graduated from high school in June. Dancing has always been a part of their lives since their teen years. Jimmy told me that he learned to dance in his early teen years because, if you knew how to dance, the girls were more apt to go out with you! Apparently it worked for him! Carolyn stated that they danced as teens at the Mount Rainier Teen Club, St Bernard s and other locations had no early idea where they were! As their sons grew up, it gave them the opportunity to attend other dance venues in the surrounding area. It was in 1995 that they met Andy Anderson at the Rod & Reel where they became active in the DC Hand Dance Club. They stated that their friends in the DCHDC are part of their extended family. When asked, What makes your heart go zing? Both answered with each other s name. No surprises here! After such a long and loving marriage, I would bet that they can most likely read each other s mind at this point in time. Congratulations to Jimmy and Carolyn! If any club member reading this Spotlight does not know them or call them friend, that member is missing a real treat!

Club Picnic and Dance: Sunday August 09, 2015 Our Picnic was a BIG SUCCESS!!! We were at the Edgewater American Legion, Post #226 from 2 to 6 p.m. We had close to 100 people, lots of food, a beautiful day and an air conditioned place to dance! Three wonderful DeeJays; Ron Carroll, Denny Martin, and Charlie Owen donated their time as a way to give back to the club. The tunes were great! The club provided meats, potato salad, condiments and utensils, etc. Some attendees brought salads, deserts, and appetizers.... We had a great time! ==================================================================================== August 7-8, 2015 Richmond Shag Club s Annual Boogie on the James A Glimpse of Hollywood About 46 plus DCHDC members had a great time dancing with the RSC (Richmond Shag Club) at their annual Boogie on the James event. See picture below of our DCHDC members who attended. Some of us dressed like Hollywood stars in keeping with the theme of this event. For the RSC, this is similar to our MMATB event we have yearly in March. Some of us had enough energy to head North on Sunday to attend the picnic mentioned above!
