Signature Page My family and I realize that the judges are qualified judges and the decision of the judges is final; therefore we promise that we will graciously accept their decision. As the candidate and candidate s parent/guardian, we understand that a cheerleader s failure to uphold the rules stated results in suspension or removal from the squad as decided by the sponsor and administration. As the candidate s parent/guardian, I understand my child s obligation as well as my supportive needs such as transportation. We, candidate and parent/guardian, also accept that if the candidate is selected as cheerleader, that cheerleading practice and performances will be a priority. As the candidate s parent/guardian and as the candidate, we understand and are committed to obeying the rules stated if the candidate is chosen as a Walter L. Wilkinson Middle School Cheerleader. We understand and have received a copy of the MISD Guidelines for Middle School cheerleaders, Walter L. Wilkinson Middle School Cheerleading Guidelines, MISD Athletic Release Form, and tumbling Permission form. We also understand that if the candidate is chosen, a physical will be required before the cheerleader attends camp. Voice Projection Don t sing your words; make your words crisp and sharp. Project voices up instead of out. Use a deep voice, not a high screeching one. Use facial expressions during your try-out If all else fails, SMILE! Make lots of eye contact, don t be shy. Facial expression Spirit and Enthusiasm Try not to make your entrance look rehearsed. Use simple phrase when extra spirit is needed, such as, all right, let s go, Wildcat s #1 and Touchdown Cats Keep smiling at all times Jumps Low pointed jumps are prettier than high flexed jumps. Sit up in your jumps! Pretty forms win every time. Repetition of 10 times in a row for better performance Behavior at Try-out Practices Follow all guidelines Never make fun of others trying out Never stand around doing nothing. Everyone must work to help improve their skills. You are being judged everyday of the tryout week. Tryouts Relax in front of the judges they have all been in your shoes before. Dear Cheerleader Parent (s)/guardian(s): Over the last twenty years, cheerleading has changed greatly from squads who perform basic spirit chants and cheers to squads participating in very specialized activities involving very sophisticated and, sometimes, dangerous tumbling and gymnastic routines. Our goal is to provide the best in quality cheer instruction as well as the safest possible cheer experience. These routines are taught in summer camp by professional trainers and are practiced each and every day without serious or permanent injuries suffered by the participants. Indeed, Mesquite ISD has never had a cheerleader permanently injured by doing any of the various tumbling and /or gymnastic routines that are commonly seen in today s cheerleading performances; however, the possibility of injury is always present. Therefore, we request your permission to allow your cheerleader to perform gymnastic stunts since you are the best judge of quality of instruction your student has received. Students will be prohibited from performing these routines without your permission. Please sign and return this letter giving your cheerleader permission to be involved in gymnastic tumbling routines; or, if the case be, to ask that your cheerleader not be allowed to participate in tumbling routines. Please contact me if you should have questions or wish to discuss this further. Sincerely, Molly Purl Wilkinson Middle School Principal Yes, please allow my cheerleader, to participate in gymnastic/tumbling routines. No, please do not allow my cheerleader, to participate in gymnastic/tumbling routines. Parent Signature: Date: Dear Parents/Guardians,

Your child has expressed interest in trying out for 7 th or 8 th grade cheerleader and/or mascot for Wilkinson Middle School. Our cheerleading squads are an essential part of our school spirit, and its members must be responsible students who can adjust to extra duties and maintain passing averages in all academic subjects. Cheerleading involves many extra hours in the summer and after school during the school year, and in order for the group to function as a squad, each cheerleader s commitment is vital. During the school year, cheerleaders are expected to attend all cheering assignments as required for football, volleyball and basketball seasons. Transportation to these events is not provided by the school. All cheerleaders are required to attend a summer cheerleading camp with their squad and the sponsor. The session lasts no more than one week. Attendance is mandatory because much of the material used throughout the year will be learned at camp. Cheerleading involves time and effort. Please see that your child understands the responsibilities involved in holding this position. Every member must perform his or her share of duties. It is the expectation that all cheerleaders maintain a positive attitude, are physically capable of handling duties/activities and understand that the cheerleader guidelines will be meet at all times. We are looking forward to another successful year at Wilkinson Middle School. Sincerely, Melinda Fonseca Wilkinson Cheerleader Sponsor & Molly Purl Wilkinson Middle School Principal Mesquite Independent School District Cheerleader Application Lanny Frasier Middle School Please print clearly
