SELECTION GUIDELINES School Sport Australia Carnivals consist of educational and sporting components. Being a member of a School Sport Victoria (SSV) State Team provides an opportunity to be involved in an all inclusive educational and sporting excursion. All members of selected teams, whether students or team officials, are expected to fulfil the responsibilities of being a Victorian Team Member. These responsibilities include: * Attending all training sessions deemed compulsory by team management staff. * Attending initial briefing sessions, purchasing uniform via an online process, uniform presentation and team photograph sessions. * Travelling to the Championship destination with all members of state team. * Completing team documentation and returning same to team management by due date. * Ensuring team membership invoice is paid by due date. * Attending all sessions of the School Sport Australia Carnival, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the excursion activity. * Recognising that all School Sport Australia Championships are school activities, and that duty of care and decision-making regarding each team member s participation in those activities or in preparation for those activities, is the responsibility of the team management / coaching staff. * Team Officials ensuring that the selection process is fair and transparent, and that students, parents and teachers are made aware of this process. 2
Selection Process School Sport Victoria will be entering only one 15 Years and Under Boys Australian Football team in 2018. School Sport Australia rules state that when all eight state and territory member bodies compete at a National Championship (as will occur at this year s 15 Years and Under Australian Football Championships), each member body may enter only one team. In light of this, the 2018 team will be selected through two streams. STAGE 1 All NON & TAC nominated players Trial Date: Tuesday 3 April 2018. (Note: School Holidays), Players from Gippsland Power, Dandenong Stingrays, Eastern Ranges, Oakleigh Chargers, Sandringham Dragons Development Squads. Time: 9:00am 2:00pm, Venue: Beaconsfield Football Club (Emerald Rd & Holm Park Rd, Beaconsfield, VIC) Trial Date: Wednesday 4 April 2018. (Note: School Holidays) Bendigo Pioneers, Murray Bushrangers, Ballarat Rebels Time: 9:00am 2:00pm, Venue: Ballarat - TBC Trial Date: Monday 9 April 2018. (Note: School Holidays) Players from Northern Knights, Calder Cannons, Western Jets, Geelong Falcons Development Squads Time: 9:00am 2:00pm, Venue: Williamstown Football Club (Burbank Oval, Morris Street Williamstown, VIC) Trial Date: Tuesday 10 April 2018. STAGE 2 Final 60-70 players x 2 days x 4 games Sunday April 15 Venue TBC Sunday April 22 Venue TBC Team officials reserve the right to invite players to latter stages of the trials in the following situations. This is not guaranteed and will be assessed on a case by case basis. * when a student has been involved in official school assessment; * when a student/team has not attended because they have been representing Victoria or Australia in a sporting competition; * when a student/team has not attended because of their participation in a sporting event or competition considered to be of greater status; * when a student is injured or ill at the time. The student must provide a medical certificate indicating an injury/illness and the fitness of the student to compete in the later trials; Team officials also reserve the right to not require a player to participate in any trial stage if they deem it to be unnecessary. A team of twenty five players will be announced within 72 hours after the final trial. Team officials reserve the right to select a player who is injured or unavailable during the trial process for the reasons detailed above. Critical to selection of the final squad is the need for team balance. Guidelines for selectors * Comparable field time for all players * Opportunity to play in at least two preferred positions * Consideration of team composition so players from the same school or team are not advantaged over individual representatives * Where appropriate, concentrate on selecting players with generic skills rather than players for specific positions * Length of each playing period is a minimum 4 x 15 minute quarters. * Where possible, use independent umpires and or selectors (i.e. not a relative or friend of trial participants). Selectors are looking for: * Strong passing skills, strong ball control, safe hands / feet * Agility, balance, poise * Solid attacking / defensive / tackling skills * Knowledgeable positional / tactical play * Concentration / focus during play * Positive on and off field behaviour * Strong sense of team spirit / good sportsmanship * Ability to communicate / cooperate with team mates / team officials * Understands rules of the game * Fitness * Ability to follow instructions * Ability to control emotions * Leadership skills * Carry out above skills under pressure 5
