Reading Tips 6 Here are some engaging ways to use this book to help children build important early math skills. Before Reading: 4 Create a sense of excitement by using a wet sponge to write the numeral 6 on a chalkboard. Can children guess what you ve written before it disappears? 4 Invite each of the children to trace the numeral 6 in the air and to hold up six fingers. 4 Display the book s cover. Ask children to identify the numeral 6 in the top right corner. What objects do they see six of? (six balloons, six spots, etc.) Then ask kids to use picture clues to predict what might happen in the story. During Reading: 4 Read the story straight through with gusto. This will give kids an opportunity to enjoy its whimsical plot and rollicking rhyme. 4 Read the story a second time. Invite children to explore the illustrations and to locate and count the sets of six. 4 Read the story a third time. Call attention to moments when the word six appears in the text. If you like, encourage kids to clap six times whenever they hear the word. After Reading: 4 Display the Can You Find? picture on pages 14 15. Challenge children to locate and count the requested items as well as other sets of six (including six presents, six marbles, six flowers, six oranges, six stars, and six legs on each bug). 4 Read Six Cheer on page 16 several times, encouraging children to chime in and enthusiastically perform the designated movements including six claps, six jumps, and six stomps. 4 To reinforce number sense, give each of the children a set of manipulatives such as dried beads, snap beads, or plastic teddy bear counters. Challenge kids to organize them into groups of six. For added fun, work together to make a Six Collage in which you clip sets of six items from magazines (such as pictures of six bugs, six children, six fish), then affix them to posterboard and display.
