Item 282-44 Burning of the Parliament in Montreal April 25, 1849, passage of the rebellion losses bill sparked rioting that led to the burning of the Parliament buildings in Montreal. The letter, mailed from Huntingdon LC to an MPP (Jacob De Witt, Beauharnois) makes a number of interesting comments on this event as well as postal service from Hinchinbrook Lower Canada. The burning of the Parliament in Montreal was an important event in pre-confederation Canadian history. It is considered a crucial moment in the development of the Canadian democratic tradition, largely as a consequence of how the matter was dealt with by then coprime ministers of the united Province of Canada, Sir Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine and Robert Baldwin. The St. Anne s Market building lodging the Legislative Council and Assembly of Canada was burned down by Loyalist rioters in retaliation for the Rebellion Losses Bill while the members of the Legislative Assembly were sitting in session. The episode is characterized by divisions in pre-confederation Canadian society concerning whether Canada was the North American appendage of the British Empire or a nascent sovereign nation. Jacob De Witt was a Quebec businessman and political figure. He was born in Connecticut and came to Montreal in 1802. He owned a steamship that transported goods on the Saint Lawrence River and owned land and a sawmill in Beauharnois County. De Witt was elected to represent Beauharnois and later, Chateauguay. De Witt helped establish the Montreal and Bytown Railway and was a founder and director of the Montreal City and District Savings Bank. The letter is from Andrew Buckham, 5 th May 1849. Hinchinbrook Lower Canada. ideal showpiece $500.00 SOLD
