Spark `N Throttle Page 1 MARCH, 2018 V OLUME 46, I SSUE 03 President s Message, March 2018 By Bubba Johnson, President Hello fellow Model A peeps. I d like to start out by thanking all of the folks that helped organize the 52 Anniversary Picnic at Living Stones Church. This event has become one of my favorites. It s laid back, and has all of the ingredients for a great day. We had a short driving tour (where I actually got the instructions wrong and was waiting at the wrong Walmart!!) that included a visit to Clover Field. Clover Field is actually called something else now, but I ve lived in Friendswood just about all of my life and it will forever be Clover Field. A tour and close inspection of an actual airplane powered by a Model A engine. What a sight! Unfortunately the winds were a little too brisk to take it on a test fight, but an amazing piece of machinery at any rate. Look for pictures of the event on the website. We re getting ready for the Poor Boy Tour in Cuero next and it should be a great event loaded with driving tours and plenty of time for visiting and fellowship (and eating!). And then after the Poorboy Tour, our next event is the nationally famous Pate Swap Meet. This is also one of my favorites. I ve been going to the Pate Swap Meet since the early 80 s and it has grown oh so much. That s about it, have a great month and I ll see you at the next meeting on March 20. Bubba Out. March Tech Session Touring Etiquette. Discussion lead by Ray Hinnant. Should be interesting. 2018 Poor Boy Tour - Hosted by our club Our club is hosting the Poor Boy tour on March 16-17 in Cuero, TX. Not to late to register. The registration form is included in this newsletter as well as on our club website. Most of the planning has been done, but please help if asked or you see someone that needs help. INSIDE INFO! March 2018 Page 2 52nd Anniversary Picnic - February 24, 2018 (photos: Bob, Bubba, Kent; text: Mary) We ve been together 52 years as a model a club and we gathered to celebrate the anniversary at the Living Stones Church Victory Camp. The event began with a tour, stopping at the Pearland Regional Airport, then continuing to the victory camp. Once at the camp, it was right into the car games, run by Mel and Jane Rivers. The wind was especially working against Jane as she tried to keep things from blowing away each time she had to set up the balloons! Inside, after being welcomed by Olga Buck and Jackie Walne, Jean and Marty Johnson gave us a chance to win a jar of candy by guessing the number of pieces. Lloyd gray was in charge of the indoor games, which were not as easy as they looked! After the fun and games, we took a 52nd anniversary picture followed by a train ride around the camp. Our anniversary meal was barbecue and anniversary cake. The beautiful cakes were provided by Jackie and Tom Walne. As always LaVerne Riekert had beautiful table decorations with an array of bird houses, some of which were give away as door prizes. The afternoon continued with the annual Hubley races, which brings out the competitiveness of some of our members! (You know who you are!) Results of the day Outdoor games: Bumper Bowling - Lloyd Gray Wheel Revolution - Preston Miculka Balloon Pop - tie with Lloyd Gray, Tom Harris, Richard Washburn Indoor games: Candy Guess: Fan Belt, Bean Bag, Duck Pond - all won by Bob Pond Guess parts in Bag - Mel Rivers Bob Pond Model A powered Pietenpol airplane Hubley Races: Junior Division - 1st Place - Peyton Wilbanks, 2nd Place - Logan Wilbanks Senior Division - 1st Place - Pat Moore, 2nd Place - Janice Washburn, 3rd Place - Doug Busker Best Restored Looking Car - Patricia Karis People s Choice - Richard Washburn Looking to next year - Richard Washburn will always take used trophies to make trophies for future Hubley races.

March 2018 Page 4 March Outing - 2018 Poor Boy Tour Cuero, TX March 16-17, 2018 The 2018 Poor Boy Tour will be here before you know it (this weekend!). This marks the 50 th year of this annual event. Each year the Model 'A' Ford Clubs of; the Houston A s, the Piney Wood A s, the Alamo A s, and the Victori A s get together to enjoy fellowship and driving their A s. The Houston A s and the Alamo A s gathered for the first tour in 1969 at Cuero. The Victori A s joined the tour in 1974 and the Piney Wood A s joined in 1987. This year the Houston A s are hosting the Poor Boy which will be held in Cuero. Because of competition for motel rooms and banquet facilities in the area, due to the spring Round Top Antique Market, Eagle Ford Shale Oil Production, and other tours, the Poor Boy Tour has been scheduled for March 16-17, 2018. Willie Sanders, the tour chairperson, may ask for your help in making this year s Poor Boy Tour a success. May Get A Way, May 18-19, Huntsville TX Save the dates! The May Get A Way will be May 18 & 19 returning on the 20th, in Huntsville, TX. We will be leaving from Katy, and trailer parking will be provided. Make your reservations now at the Holiday Inn 936-295-4300. The address is 148 S I-45 Huntsville, TX 77340. The group rate is $99 per night. Be sure to mention The Houston Model A Restorers Club. Model A s Visit BACS On a beautiful March day, 3 Model A s moseyed over to Bay Area Christian School to visit the 4th grade classes. They had been studying that era in their History classes and were very excited to see some cars they had heard about. Bob Pond, Elmer Johnson, and Warren Pollard all gave them a little history lesson and let them look over their cars. The most fun for the students was when they got to honk the horns. Several students want to buy one, so hopefully we will have some future Model A ers. Bob Pond, Elmer Johnson, Warren Pollard
