Girls Volleyball Maple Lake wins first championship; Eagan defends Class AAA title Maple Lake (Class AA) was the only school to win its first title at the 2016 State Volleyball Tournament. In Class AAA, the Eagan Wildcats defended their 2015 championship and won their seventh title overall. The Mayer Lutheran Crusaders claimed top honors in Class A. It was their second title, but first since 1982. Class A The top-seeded Crusaders of Mayer Lutheran (29-6) won their second champion - ship after defeating No. 3-seeded Caledonia 3-1 (20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20). They won their first title in 1982. Mayer Lutheran was making its 12th tournament appearance, but first since 2014. Madison Huckey paced the Crusaders with 14 digs and 15 kills. Olivia Tjernagel added 13 kills for Mayer Lutheran. Madison Heaney led Caledonia with 17 kills and Mariah Schroeder added a game-high 16 digs. Mayer Lutheran advanced to the championship after defeating Heritage Christian Academy of Maple Grove 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-4) in the semifinals. Huckey and Lauren Wandersee paced the Cardinals with 30 and 27 assists, respectively, and Mya Chmielewski had a game-high 24 digs. Caledonia upset Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in the second championship semifinal, winning 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 16-14). Adrianna Reinhart tallied 45 assists for the Warriors and Heaney had 22 digs. Sam Schroeder and Katelyn Stemper added 18 and 16 digs, respectively for Caledonia. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton claimed third-place honors after defeating Heritage Christian Academy 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 26-24). Sydney Lanoue had 14 kills for the Panthers and Gabbie Gervais added 32 assists. The Eagles were led by Sarah Suits and Maddy Torve. Suits tallied 20 digs and Torve had a teamhigh 11 kills. Underwood went home with the consolation hardware. The Rockets defeated Kimball Area 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21). Brenna Tinjum played a stellar game for Underwood with 12 kills and 13 digs. Jacey Ross recorded a game-high 24 set assists for the Rockets. Madison Hurle paced Kimball Area with 11 digs and eight kills. after a one-year absence to make its fifth appearance. This was the second consecutive runner-up showing for Concordia Academy-Roseville. The Beacons fell to Belle Plaine in the 2015 title match. Maple Lake had 41 kills to Concordia Academy-Roseville s 22. Linsey Rachel had 21 kills to lead the Irish. Mollie Scheiber and Morgan Scheiber had 13 digs apiece for Maple Lake. Erin Fallert led Concordia Academy-Roseville with nine kills and Rachel TerHaar added 13 digs. Maple Lake needed four games to get past Kasson-Mantorville in the semifinals, winning 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15). Olivia Marquette posted a game-high 24 assists for the Irish. Morgan Scheiber had 14 digs for Maple Lake and Mollie Scheiber added 10 more. In the second semifinal, Concordia Academy-Roseville dismissed Kenyon- Wanamingo 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 29-27, 22-25, 15-10). Brooke Weichbrodt had 54 assists for the Beacons, and Fallert posted a team-high 26 kills. Kenyon-Wanamingo settled for third place after defeating Kasson-Mantorville 3-0 (28-26, 25-23, 25-14). The Knights played a well-rounded game with 17 kills from Mara Quam and 23 assists from Mia Peterson. Peyton Suess and Bailey Berge each had 14 digs for Kasson-Mantorville. Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta rebounded to take consolation honors. The Tigers defeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 26-24, 25-19). Jenna Howden recorded 16 of Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta s 51 kills and Riley Decker had 38 digs. Faith Anderson led Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton with 27 kills and Paige Fabre had a game-high 43 digs. Class AAA In Class AAA, Eagan (31-1) claimed its second consecutive title and seventh overall. The Wildcats, who were the top seed, defeated No. 2-seeded Champlin Park 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21). In addition to the past two years, the Wildcats also won in 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, and 2013. Brie Orr led Eagan with 18 kills and 19 set assists and Taylor Olstad had a game-high 36 digs.
