2 Girls Soccer Benilde-St. Margaret s repeats as Class A champion; Centennial stages upset for Class AA crown Benilde-St. Margaret s of St. Louis Park and Centennial of Circle Pines captured championships during the 2016 State Soccer Tournament at in Minneapolis. Benilde-St. Margaret s successfully defended its Class A crown and won the title for the fourth time in the past five seasons. It was the first championship for Centennial, which began the tournament as the No. 5 seed. Class A Entering postseason play, Benilde-St. Margaret s wasn t favored to repeat as the Class A girls champion. The Red Knights were in their final four regular-season games and were then seeded No. 2 in the Section 5A tournament behind Totino-Grace of Fridley. Something must have clicked, though, when the postseason began and the Red Knights proved to be unstoppable. Benilde- St. Margaret s went on a postseason tear that ended with a 2-1 title victory over Mankato West in the Class A championship game. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Cassidy scored 25 seconds after the opening kick and senior midfielder Maren Noble added another first-half goal to spark the Red Knights (18-4-1) to their fourth championship. In addition to the past two years, Benilde-St. Margaret s also won in 2012 and 13. During seven postseason games, the Red Knights outscored the opposition The Red Knights 19-to-2 goal differential in the section tournament earned them the top seed for the state tournament. The latest championship made Benilde-St. Margaret s the answer to this trivia question: Which Class A team has won championships in three different venues? Answer: The Red Knights, who won the 2012 and 13 championships at the Metrodome, the 2015 crown last year at St. Cloud State University, and the 2016 title in the first year at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Red Knights wasted little time in claim ing the momentum. Off the opening kick, Noble sent a pass to a streaking Cassidy, who completed the breakaway with a one touch. Noble later scored in the 35th minute to give the Red Knights a two-goal halftime advantage. Mankato West (19-3-0), the No. 3 seed, climbed to within 2-1 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Rachel Luedtke in the 48th minute. Benilde-St. Margaret s earned a spot in the championship game for the second consecutive season behind a 3-2 victory over Hill- Murray of Maplewood, the No. 4 seed. Junior forward Vivian Shinall scored two goals in the first half to spur the Red Knights. Ninth-grade midfielder Katherine Schindler opened the scoring for the Pioneers in the 26th minute on a header goal. Mankato West forged its way into the Class A championship game with a 3-0 victory over unseeded Dover-Eyota. Junior forward McKenna Buisman scored two goals, one in each half, to propel the Scarlets. Junior forward Shelby Lund gave Mankato West a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute, three minutes prior to Buisman s second goal, which was scored on a penalty kick. In the third-place game, Hill-Murray raced to a 3-0 victory over Dover-Eyota behind two goals from Katharine Schindler sandwiched around one from sophomore forward Claire Fletcher. Class AA Centennial opened the tournament as the only undefeated team in the eight-team Class AA field. But the undefeated record, that included three ties, was only enough to earn the Cougars the No. 5 seed for the state tournament. Three games later, the Cougars were the only team in girls soccer to end the season without a loss. Centennial turned heads and silenced skeptics in a mini upset binge that ended with a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Rosemount in the Class AA championship game. Senior forward Tessa Trettel scored a goal in each half to spur the Cougars (18-0-3) to their first championship in six state tournament appearances. The victory capped a spree where the Cougars upended No. 4 Lakeville North in a shootout in the quarterfinals. Centennial then defeated Andover 2-1 with a quick twogoal burst in the semifinals. Trettel opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the championship game with a long-range shot that sailed over the head of Rosemount senior goalkeeper Maggie Tulay.
